I have a question for Mark. You always say Gerrard should play further forward. Today he started in the most attacking position in a long time, pretty much playing behind the striker. Did his performance change your mind?

I thought Gerrard had a mare for long periods of the game today, giving away the ball far too easily.
He partly made up for this with some very good set pieces, and some more passion towars the end.
Looks like Stevie's age is begining to take its toll - he'd be better off without playing those England games

Gerrard has played a shitty game every time after an international break..... I didn't expect a great game regardless of where he played, but it would take big balls to drop him from the derby line up. We need players who can cover his weakness., he has as many assist he has this season for a reason.... He is not the first person we should look at when we are trying to figure out why our midfield is so gormless

His set pieces and crossing were the only plus points from a fairly inept display.
His first half performance was ghastly.

I still wonder if we'd get more out of him by using him less.

I agree, his legs just arent up to it, you can tell your in for long afternoon watching him when he starts trying to hit 60 yards passes in the first 2 minutes because he cant carry the ball

His set piece delivery has been great lately but his all round game has been average at best this season, at times he has been one of our least effective players. Needs to be much more selectively managed.

But Neil Warnock said he is playing as well this season as he has ever seen him play ....

If only we had a midfield that could accommodate him. Some of his long balls and set pieces would be worth doing just that, as well as his presence being a motivator for team mates. But we have ZERO creativity or skills from our other midfielders, and that not only makes it harder for the older Gerrard but also places so much more responsibility for Coutinho to try to do something special.
We need midfielders ASAP, but not necessarily to replace Gerrard. We should be carrying the legend.

I disagree, his long term replacement should be our number one priority, we shouldnt be actively trying to carry anybody. Gerrard either gets in the team on merit or not at all. Theres no point in refusing to sign better players to replace him just so that we can keep him in the team, its a law of diminishing returns at this point we just cant rely on him to run games anymore

He kept losing the ball when he was the second furthest forward, and then he'd stroll back, with that really irritating swinging of the arms he does. I'm just surprised he didn't whistle. He's been in denial since he came back from his operation, declaring he'd never felt so fit and strong in his life, whilst playing as if he was 65.

Still he got 2 assists and loads of key passes. He looked his age today though.
The midfield is dysfunctional as fuck, but I'd rather have Gerrard in there than not tbh.

His petulance towards Coutinho I think it was at the edge of the box when they tried a neat 1-2 was shocking.
He threw his arms up in the air like a spoilt brat and if I remember correctly it was his own fault.
Not what anyone wants to see from a captain.
I still wouldn't drop him considering what we have on the bench.

1 assist

Coutinho got to the corner off a deflection

Yes, if he was a great captain it would make up for a lot but he hardly ever reacts to teammates except to moan at them. If he doesn't have the stamina any more he really needs to show some leadership and help the younger players.

On the field I agree but by all accounts from young players past and present he really goes out of the way to make them feel comfortable and that they belong in the squad/team when off the pitch.
Don't know if that evens things out, and he obviously could do better for them on the pitch, but he has tried hard to work on his personality to help his team out.

Yes, he's excellent off the field, but that's not the main priority. There used to be a club captain and a team captain. He's a club captain.

Sad reality is Gerrard can no longer cut it at top level football. Not consistently anyway.

The guy is one of our greatest ever players but he's becoming a liability.

He seems to have turned into Hollywood ball and set piece specialist this season, whilst the rest of his game falls apart. He's giving away more balls in dangerous positions than I've ever seen him do. His England role is ruining him. I bet he played injured today.

It's funny when all the former players go on LFCTV and abide meekly by the house rules, pretending Gerrard is man of the match every game, and then on their own podcast they say things like 'I had to keep checking he was on the pitch'. Hopefully Rodgers is being fairly candid with him behind closed doors, but I rather doubt it.

He needs to be rotated out of the team for a spell, his legs wont allow him to play twice a week. The worry is that while Gerrard is occasionally capable of a great game and a defence splitting pass, the other midfielders are nowhere near good enough to replace him

Hes becoming like Giggs, his reputation is preventing people from making a critical analysis of what he brings to the team.

We have no-one else even remotely near his class that can play in central MF. Simples.

Yeah, he's lost his stamina and a yard of pace, even more so after an International week, but fact remains he still gets in some great tackles (I'm trying to remember if our other MFs, bar Lucas, got in ANY) though loses out on others. However it's his passing that is irreplaceable, we have no one else with that range and precision (these type of passes are always going to have a negative success % and yesterday was not his best day - see Performances After Internationals), plus his class on the ball - he very very very rarely gets dispossessed. And I have been a big critic of his corners but he really seems to have improved a lot in that area - he put in some great balls yesterday.

So until we can find a Barkley we have no-one that comes near him.

Too many fucking sheep on here ... or should that be fucking sheep hmm.

Don't fret. Most of you in here will be lavishing praises after praises about what a great loss it will for the club and what a great player, blah blah blah....the day Stevie calls it quits.
