Greatest transfer window in history

Who says the manager wanted these players?

It's irrelevant.

His job is to play the hand he's dealt (like he did last season), it's a pretty good fucking hand and one the whole fanbase endorsed......now be the tactician you were brought in to be and make it work.

Diaz did have output though, you just didn’t appreciate it.

Diaz and Szobo were our best pressers last season and they were a block in the middle of the park. They prevented us from being played through so easily.

Neither Wirtz nor Ekitike has replaced that despite them being hardworking

Exactly, of course he had output. I never wanted him gone & never really understood the amount of fans that wanted him out. It made no sense especially after Jota dieing. He should've gotten a new contract. If Salah can get a 400k contract at 32 years old then what's the problem with paying Diaz his worth for a few more years?

You just don't get rid of players like Diaz. Fuck knows why so many were apathetic or even happy about him leaving. Clueless really.

Yeah he could be frustrating at times but he contributed a lot to the team, if you didn't see it then then you're seeing it now.

& of course he's pissing all over the Bundesliga which shouldn't be a surprise to anyone.

Course it isn’t, if a manager wanted a CM and we brought 2 expensive forwards. Not saying that is what happened but completely relevant taking onboard manager’s view.

I wonder if the data nerds forgot to look into the decline of Mo, Konate, Macca and Gakpo like they did with Robbo.

Maybe they did with Konate but Glazner messed up that plan by not letting Guehi (sp) go.

I asked for a table they bought me a lampshade
He’s not here to make demands. We have a recruitment team in place for a reason, if he can’t adapt or too cowardly to make some tough decisions, then we’ll find someone who can.

Think data nerds are over rated. They needed Klopp to make then look good, some if the data nerds were here since Comoli’s time from what I remember. Then it was Klopp’s fault as he over used his power to get rid and this summer they seemed to have had a open cheque. Would have priortised CB and CM over another CF. Maybe the science told them something different…

Possibly but the players they identified and got are world class or have huge potential. Data nerds tend to work for the long term, they’re not so great for in-game tactics that requires a coach’s instinct

I am still hopeful of a PSG-like turnaround. I am much more concerned about our goals conceded that our attack, as we are creating some good chances and are penetrating the midfield well with Gravy more free.

If we can tighten up the defensive side, which includes all 11 players defending, I think we may regain our enthusiasm for the transfer window.

I think we can all agree Wirtz is nowhere near as good as the hype train made him out to be.

It’s just bad for him that everyone else is struggling too and he isn’t good enough yet to do it alone.

9 games
0 goals
0 assists

It’s becoming a huge pressure point.

No, "we" can't. It's massively too soon to say any such thing. This is exactly the kind of ludicrous rush to judgment which you yourself have rightly criticised in other threads.

Good shout, soon as one or two go in then it becomes confidence game.

It was made abundantly clear to us that Arne was head coach not manager which suggests he is given players selected by the club. I've no doubt he is counselled but not final arbiter on incoming and outgoings.

New season, new players, new challenge. Plenty of opportunity to develop.

A couple of thoughts, which others have quite possibly mentioned, but I’ve not got the energy to check.

I remember banging my head against the wall when Klopp continued to play Moreno after we signed Robbo. But he was right. Gave Robbo months to get up to speed without any pressure, who absolutely smashed it once he got in the team. Slot needs to grow some fucking balls and do something similar.

The worst thing about the Nunez signing is that we never played to his strengths. Yeah, he missed a tonne of chances and turned shit, but he could have been so much better if we’d just played the ball to him so he could run on to it, not have to think, and crack the ball at the net. Instead, he had to be involved in our patient build up play most of the time when he was completely ill-suited to do so. I see a bit of that with Wirtz.

There are times when he makes the right decision, moves into good ares, expects the ball and doesn’t get it. Instead, he’s had to adjust to the way we’re playing, and he’s largely looked shit. Given his talent, I’m confident he’ll come good, but it’s a fucking mess right now. That’s on Slot.

Hopefully we’ll turn things around… we’ve got the players to be able to do so, and if and when we start to play together, I think we’d be the class of the league. But it’s going to take a lot of work and a massive fucking improvement from Slot to get there.

You are going over the top - considering we are just one point behind and have only played 7 games - its like the season has ended for you. I don't see us replacing him unless he has a season like Ange/or that Manc manager. If he ends the season getting us a CL spot the ownership will stick to him, and he has earned that right. I don't know like the rest on here if things will improve, but I have faith in the players giving it their best in the next games to ensure we have the best chance of winning regardless of the last three results. Say what you want the effort shown by the players is still visible, the timing is just all wrong.

Totally agree with you - and on that Nunez point - the season we signed him was after that quad attempt and the legs of the midfielders had gone - that was actually the best season to play to Nunez's strength, forget the pressing - just play a compact defensive game and go long into space for Nunez to run onto the ball - it would have worked in my view.

Regarding Wirtz, - I am noticing it and especially in the Newcastle game there were so many times where he was between the lines and free, but none of the others passed to him in moments where he had space to turn and do his stuff. I found it really strange watching that and the same thing happens over and over again.

He was lauded as the biggest talent of his age bracket in the world. An already established superstar who had made it by winning a title in Germany and starting for Germany. While everyone knew it would take time to settle, very few would have predicted how bad he’d be while he finds his feet. Even a half fit Isak who can’t run has a goal and as assist in a handful of games.

He desperately needs to start influencing games in an impactful way.

The same Bundesliga that Wirtz was pissing on for over 2 seasons?

Diaz is gone. He was here for 4 seasons. He has never shown the same productivity. Let's move on. Alternatively you can invent a time machine or find a working crystal ball.

We need to make the team solid again, and that means sacrificing one of our luxury attackers (feels like we now have 3 forwards who don't press like lunatics, where as it was only 1 who didn't when we were Diaz, Jota/Nunez, Salah). for legs in the middle.

There has been a major misalignment between the system the manager wants and the players we signed. At this stage we can't change the squad, and so we should be changing the system. Otherwise by end of Oct we'll be 12th.

I don't think we need forwards pressing like lunatics, but we do need them and the midfield to know how to press together. I think wirtz for example is very active off the ball but our team doesn't press as well at all. It's not surprising either, the core of our pressing logic was all developed under klopp, who is the absolute best in the world at that. We aren't just new on the ball, we are new off the ball, and yes, we removed a junkyard dog in Diaz. The players who are in now could be a lot more effective than they are now, collectively. It's not impossible for them to develop, but none of them are intrinsically physical.

Also something many of us commented on last year in support of Szobo at AM - he more often than not led our press. Moving him to DM or RB removes his ability to do that, and we are left with someone new having that responsibility.

I have seen enough from Wirtz to believe he has all the attributes to make it for us, but I don't believe we are operating in a way to maximise this.

That’s a good point - I didn’t quite think of this before. I like Szobo playing deeper, but it does mean someone else from the front 4 needs to lead our press. Wirtz obviously needs to learn our system before he can actually lead it.
