Hillsborough - Judgement Day

Sorry but that's flat wrong. The jury would have been expressly required to disregard any prior knowledge they might have had and reach a verdict solely on the evidence presented in court.

You have a touching faith in the ability of a jury to compartmentalize. I've twice been on juries and my experience is that 'evidence' isn't the only thing talked over. No offence, just relating my own knowledge.

Well, that's experience I can't match, and if I'm honest I've always wondered how easy it would be to follow such instructions anyway. The fact still is, though, that in acting that way juries infringe their oath.

But for the FA's incompetence and rigidity, there would have been no tragedy. The match would not have been scheduled for Hillsborough in the first place or, at the very least, they'd have agreed to move it when we asked them to, and would have accepted Utd's offer to stage it at Old Trafford. Duckenfield and the S.Yorks.force have a lot to answer for, but I keep asking myself the question that's been in my mind almost from day one: to what extent is it the fault of the police that they failed to do a job which was probably impossible by its very nature?

No, it was far from impossible had they done their jobs properly in advance of the match. In Duckenfield's mind, you just know his preparation will have involved him doing things which he wanted to talk about later at his annual appraisal and secure a promotion. It doesn't enter his mind that he has to actually analyse, plan and manage the match, because he's a cunt.

It was extraordinary that Duckenfield actually came clean in respect of at least some of his failings during this inquest, after a quarter of a century of evading the truth.

Quite possibly, but that wasn't the essence of the problem. That appeared the season before, when the far greater number of Liverpool fans and the smaller Forest contingent had to be directed to less convenient ends of the ground for each of them, because there would not have been enough room in the ends they would normally have gone to. On the fateful day we saw what had nearly happened the previous year come to horrifying fruition. No amount of prep would have changed the internal dimensions of the ground.

Pleased for those who have fought for this, those involved and those who sadly have passed away before today.

I genuinely believe this is a microcosm of what happens on a regular basis, this isn't about conspiracy theories but about the people v the establishment. The absolute unwavering dogged determination to get a proper court hearing with dignity against powerful people looking to suppress the truth and their own shortcomings is something to be admired.

I hope it isn't all over yet, there are people who should be held to account. Who for too many years have got away with their lies from politicians to police staff to journalists.

The whole thing should be made into a film, to really highlight the evilness of those standing in the way of truth and justice.

The brief who ground him down was the one the FA engaged to conduct their side of the Suarez disciplinary appeal. The overpromoted solicitor we put up against him never stood a chance.

Amazing.. in bits here..

27 years too late for those families that suffered though...

heads must roll...

27 years of fighting for what is right for the families. A complete generation. Finally relief.

If he had taken that into account, had a plan, then executed it, but it didn't prevent the accident, then I would agree with you. However, he didn't do any of that, so he is at fault in my eyes. Sometimes accidents happen on chemical processing plants which are inevitable. But filling a football stadium is not chemical engineering, there were plenty of concessions you could make in order to ensure the safety of the fans, but he was unprepared and making it up on the fly.

You have to wonder how long any criminal proceedings would take to be put in place. I get the feeling that it may once again be a case of the system dragging it's feet and the main perpetrators never facing anything stronger than the uneasiness of their own consciences.

Sean, I hope you know we're all with you in our hearts today. I don't know what word to wish you in terms of feelings, but I wish you the best.

Thanks Macca. And to all you others. My feelings are all over the place. Euphoria, nausea, sadness, elation, relief, anger, fuck knows. I did an early dart from work, (how I thought I could be in work during today is another question entirely), went for a long walk, ate a tub of ice cream and had a pint in a pub on my own. Rang my Mum and had a long chat about the affect on all of us over these past 27 years, dealt with endless facebook/twitter/text/email correspondence and told the Mail, the Mirror and a local radio station to fuck off. In the nicest possible way of course.
Now off to pick up my two year old, who doesn't know anything about it, of course, and only cares if she's going to get to go on the swings on the way home and watch Peppa Pig when we get home.
Still taking it all in to be honest.
An incredible day.
Large glass of wine and possibly something stronger later.
Valium on standby Ross.

Thatcher's former Chief Press Secretary and the S*n have said they have no comment to make. Wankers.

Statements from the CPS, IPCC and Operation Resolve following Hillsborough inquests verdict

26/04/2016
Following the conclusion of the Hillsborough inquests, the following statements have been issued on behalf of the Independent Police Complaints Commission (IPCC), Operation Resolve and the Crown Prosecution Service (CPS):

Sue Hemming, Head of the Special Crime and Counter Terrorism Division at the CPS said: "Following the inquest's determinations the CPS team will continue to work closely with Operation Resolve and the IPCC as in due course, the CPS will formally consider whether any criminal charges should be brought against any individual or corporate body based upon all the available evidence, in accordance with the Code for Crown Prosecutors.

"We would ask that everyone is mindful of the continuing investigations and the potential for future criminal proceedings when reporting or publicly commenting on the inquest's conclusions."

IPCC Deputy Chair, Rachel Cerfontyne, said: "The conclusion of the inquests is another milestone and a day when my thoughts are with the families and friends of those who died as a result of the disaster.

"Now the inquests have ended our role in providing documents and other material to support the Coroner is over. However the end of the inquests does not mark the end of the process. Our attention now focuses on concluding our criminal investigation into the aftermath of the disaster. This is by far the biggest and most complex investigation ever undertaken by the IPCC.

"We have made significant progress on the investigation and we will continue to work closely with Operation Resolve and the Crown Prosecution Service to pursue our remaining lines of enquiry as quickly and as thoroughly as possible. I anticipate we will conclude the criminal investigations by the turn of the year."

The Officer in Overall Command of Operation Resolve, Assistant Commissioner Jon Stoddart, said: "Today is a day for the families. They have fought hard for many years for these new inquests and today brings an end to this particular part of their journey. My thoughts and those of my team are with the families and friends of the 96 as they take stock of what has happened over the past two years at the court in Warrington and begin to understand the determinations of the jury.

"For the past two years, my team has supported the Coroner, Sir John Goldring, and provided him with thousands of documents, witness statements and reports to assist him in conducting these inquests. While completing this task, my team has also been carrying out a criminal investigation.

"Now that the inquests have concluded my sole focus is on completing the criminal investigation which I expect will be finished by the turn of the year. It will then be for the Crown Prosecution Service to consider the evidence and decide whether any individual or organisation should face criminal prosecution."

Delighted for the families and everyone else who campaigned for so long, but this cover-up was symptomatic of a sick society that still exists, passed down from generation to generation. The Eton boys are still running things, and we're still their bitches.

Conn only touched on the issues in the South Yorkshire Police Force, but it was a fascinating read today.

The total lack of "crowd control" planning is unbelievable.

And the fact the South Yorkshire Police tried something similar with the Orgreave Coking plant Miner Strike. They used excessive force, blamed the miners, and then doctored statements after the fact. All under Peter Wright again. It was so organized in the Hillsborough and Orgreave - to not have come from the top down.

Well done to everybody who has been fighting for this the last 27 years! You guys are amazing!Today you got your reward! Truth is out!#JFT96

These are the things the further criminal investigation will now be looking at.

"Hillsborough about more than establishment cover up of tragic deaths. Also about a state-led cultural vilification of a city & its people."
