I really do. For all the players we've signed I was so excited about the return of Gerrard today. I genuinely feel lucky to have witnessed his career.

Brilliant to see him back today

Yes. Please God, I hope he gets back to a high standard for us and maintains it for a few years.

Thanks Stevie.

She can't - Alonso.

I agree Neets, it was beautiful to see him come on. Warmed my heart.
And i watched, he made 7 passes all accurate.
BOOM!

Hopefully he'll start against Wolves.
Wouldn't mind having Spearo there either, just as long as Henderson isn't playing. Can't afford to have any passengers on the pitch.

He is magnificent, and I think that the vast majority of fans don't appreciate just how special this lad is... We have been priviliged to watch him play for us, and we will be miss him dreadfully when he hangs 'em up.

Without question, the best footballer of his generation.

He should be...... but, he isn't. Let's be honest. Depending on what you define "his generation" as covering he's had Zidane, Kaka, Ronaldinho, Messi, Ronaldo to contend with. Then, of course, there are those who would claim that Rooney, Giggs, Henry et al should be in his class.

For me it's only when I sit back and consider these players - apart from Gerrard - that I begin to comprehend what a committment it was for Stevie to nail himself to LFC colours for life. I'm not even sure he actually grasped the full extent of what his decision meant but I believe he'd have done it anyway. I think he's given up the opportunity to be mentioned amongst the all time greats by everyone.

Imagine Gerrard of '04 to '09 standard playing with Drogba, Lampard, Robben, Duff, Schevchenko with Jose at the helm! The Chavs would have walked the title every time and won the CL at least a couple of times. They'd have been perhaps the great side of the decade and eclipsed Barca.

Imagine if he'd gone to Arsenal with Henry, Pires, Bergkamp etc. The unbeatables may well have turned into the unplayables - particularly with Wenger at the helm.

Imagine if Stevie had gone to Madrid at the time Owen went and spent those incredible years playing with that team. His all action style would have seen him worshipped by the Madrid faithful and they'd have argued whether Zidane and the greats of their past were in Gerrards class.

What about Stevie in there at Milan with Kaka, Crespo, Maldini and so on from '04 to '09?

I can't help trying to imagine how exceptional Gerrard would have become had he been playing in a team of successful players, filled with winners in a tradition of winning. IMHO, with that as his backdrop, Gerrard would have become one of the all time greats rather than an excellent player at a famous club struggling to reclaim past glories.

His name could have been etched well above Souness, Kaka or Zidane and perhaps into the pantheon of Best, Pele or Diego.

Sadly it won't be and I just hope we can claim a title for him before he leaves to give some reflection on just how good he's been.

There's a significant amount of people, mainly on other forums, who don't give Gerrard or Carragher the respect they deserve because they feel they played a part in getting Rafa the boot. Usually they're card carrying SOS members. The other telltale sign is they think Lucas is the greatest midfielder the club has ever seen.

I was really happy to see him again ... Enjoy it lads, we have 4-5 more years of watching a Liverpool legend ... What a happy day.

or he could have moved and failed...

not likely but possible

Liverpool captain Steven Gerrard said watching his team-mates from the sidelines during his six-month injury lay-off had been a "nightmare".

The 31-year-old made his first appearance since a groin operation in March in the Reds' 2-1 Carling Cup win at Brighton on Wednesday.

"It's been a nightmare for me. I'm not the best when I'm out injured and watching games," he said.

"It's been tough and the last six months have been a rollercoaster."

Gerrard would have been back in action sooner but picked up an infection in late July which set him back a few more weeks, but he played the last 15 minutes of Wednesday's game.

"It's behind me now and I'm looking forward to getting match fit and getting back in the starting line-up," added the England midfielder.

"I'd been out a long time and it was fantastic to be out there in that kit again and it was nice to get a win as well."

The victory came in a competition that is being taken seriously by manager Kenny Dalglish, and Gerrard is hopeful the Reds will be rewarded with a good run.

"We're glad to be in the draw for the next round and we're looking forward to seeing who we get in the draw on Saturday," he added.

"We haven't been to a major cup final for a long time.

"We have to take every cup seriously and when there's no Europe that makes it easier to put strong sides out."

I noticed one thing yesterday that I never ever noticed before about Gerrard. He's fucking lanky.

Wilko,

1. What Ross said. And because we've become accustom to him and his heorics...

2. Note that I said "just how special this lad is"... I didn't say they don't appreciate him, the player. I said that they don't appreciate just how great he is.

Wizz,

Of all the names that you mention, the only two that I'd put above Stevie are Zidane and Messi. The others, though greats, have not been as good, as consistently good, week in and week out over their entire careers, and as inflential to their teams as he has. In my opinion.

You ask how good could he have been, surrounded by better players... Isn't that just it? He led a team with Milan Baros, Djimi Traore, etc... to the fucking European Cup. He's been almost all we've had for long periods of his career with us. He's been this great with so of the worst players we've seen at Anfield for decades.

Would Kaka or Ronaldhino have turned Istanbul the way he did? Or even Cardiff, for that matter? I don't think so.

I wouldn't really concern myself with Wilko.

He's suffers from chronic Sand In The Ringpiece.

I know you do Whadda's. A lot of LFC supporters believe Gerrard to have been as good as anyone for lengthy periods of his career. I personally think he's been better than Zidane in many aspects but he hasn't managed to do it at World Cups like Zidane did.

The point is, the general football public don't share your sentiment. Most manc supporters, Chavs etc will tell you that Messi is the best in the world. Most fans will, begrudgingly, accept that Ronaldo is an absolute superstar and able to match anyone. They'll also tell you they found Ronaldinho electrifying or they marvelled at the magic of Kaka while some others declare that Zidane deserves to mentioned in the same breath as Pele or Best. However, ask them about Gerrard and ..... "yeah, he's a top player. Really good. He's a legend at Liverpool, yeah?"

You said Gerrard is without doubt the best footballer of his generation. Unfortunately that sentiment is confined to LFC supporters and pretty much nobody else. The wider footballing audience (ie. the billions around the world) would see Gerrard as a top player - like Rooney, Giggs or Henry. Like many others I've watched him more closely than any other player; the explosive power, the strength, the vision, the passing, the athleticism, the goal scoring prowess, the touch we take for granted but is really only shared by Suarez in the current team, the exceptional skill when he's not being smothered by opponents. It's exceptional. Messi will never have the power of Gerrard, the athleticism, the passing range or the thunderous shooting. Ronaldo will never have the power of Gerrard, the passing range, the thunderous shooting nor the vision. Zidane never had Gerrards athleticism, his passing range nor his speed. I'd go on but those three are revered by billions as all time footballing greats while Gerrard never passes their lips.

LFC supporters - whether they appreciate him or not - know just what he's capable of. For all the tension in their relationship it was Rafa who gave Stevie one of the best accolades imaginable. I'm sure most remember it but he told the media that Lampard was a fantastic player like Gerrard. But, he went on, I could play Gerrard at right back and he will be fantastic there, I could play him at Right Wing and he will be fantastic there, I could play him at CM and he'll be fantastic there, I could play him at DM and he would be fantastic there. The rest of the world, however, can be heard arguing "Gerrard or Lampard ....... or Scholes". For me this is what Gerrard has given up (besides certain titles) by sticking with LFC. I'm not suggesting he's a martyr in any way - he could buy a couple of islands with pocket money. But he has sacrificed the respect and reverence of billions that he would no doubt enjoy were it not for his committment to the Liverpool cause. He will never be regarded as without question the best of his generation - even though he was/is more than good enough.

NOthing you've said is wrong there, mate.

But just because non-Liverpool fans don't see it doesn't make them right! ;D

No argument.

But if you're the best in the world it would be only natural to want the rest of the world to recognize it.
