Daft move, considering that he's just started performing at the level expected of him.

Y1, 30m is a lot of money for Lucas. I'd sell for 15m, he's 25ish now, if a huge offer came in.....

Id be pretty shitty if we sold him, he has improved alot and is a good player. If we sold him, nothing under 15mil

The only club who would be prepared to pay £20M for Lucas Leiva right now is Liverpool football club.

depends how late in the in transfer window the offer came. if we were offered a big sum now I'd take it, if it were offered in on deadline day, than no. if we lost lucas and didn't replace who can do what lucas does, gerrard? meireles?

Im not interested in selling our best players. Lucas, Kuyt, Meireles, Gerrard, Suarez, Johnson, Reina, Carragher, Kelly are all players i would think it was a mistake to sell.
We need to add to what we have not sell and HOPE to replace with better.
NO SALE.

I wouldn't sell him. He's completely underrated and is a decent squad player.

If you'd have taken Oncey's stance and gone with one of our best players or an out and out first teamer, I'd get it.

But you wouldn't take 20M for a "decent squad player"?

20m.... I wouldn't so much as bit their hand off, but gobble the whole arm and be happily gnawing on the rib cage and several major organs.

I'd do that for the £15 mill. Even with his noticeable improvement last season he's no more than decent, and unlike some fellow posters I don't think he has much - if indeed any - more improvement left in him. I wouldn't let him go for peanuts (he's fine as a squaddie and we'd need to be sure we could replace him) but the idea that he's a player we have to keep makes no sense to me.

Look at the market though. 15-20m for Lucas gets you what? Downing? Henderson?
Its just not good value. I know Lucas probably isnt worth 20m but then Henderson is worth about 4m so the market is nuts.
Selling Lucas for an increased fee just means we have to sign someone else for an increased fee AND hope they hit the ground running and perform better than our player of the season.
Whats the point.

If we sign Banega (eg) and keep Lucas, if Banega cant play we have Lucas.

Jovanovic
Aquilani
Cole
Degen
Insua
Konchesky
etc

We have lots of shit to sell without weakening our first team

I just dont get it.
I dont see why we (as a non selling club) would sell our best players.

Thde market is also illusory, its what anyone's prepared to pay.

We've paid 55 million for 2 potentially good players; you cant say thats the market price when no one else would pay that much.

I'd like to know what £15-20M buys you as a replacement, given the market this summer and the lack of decent DMs I would say it'd be a lesser player than Lucas (still can't believe I can actually afford him that sort of praise these days).

We wouldn't get £20m for starters. And we've just paid that more or less that for Henderson who, at the moment, is no more than a decent squad player. Lucas has improved impressively and become an important part of the first team and squad. Now I'm not going to go all RAWK and say he's our best player and there's no better out there - far from it - but neither am I going to refuse to admit he's playing an important role just because I historically have said he was shite (and I've had times where I've thought this) as many people on here do.

He's in the team, he's settled and he's producing. So why sell ?

Lucas isn't a squad player he is a first teamer, he SHOULD be a squad player but currently there is no one in the squad that can do a better job as a defensive shield. How many games has gerrard played as a holding midfielder? Five?

Absolutely, ken.

The 'dont sell, he's a sound squad player' only makes sense to a certain extent.

Anything approaching £15m and we'd be mad not to sell, as I believe a like for like could be sourced at less than cost.

Coz 20M has the potential to improve the first team more than Lucas.
[/quote]I cant argue with that Ken, but its a chance rather than a fact. Id much rather clear the dead wood and see if we can improve the team than risk taking out one of the players who actually played well last year all year.

We also seem to have the money to compete without selling so i dont see the point in selling him. We will sign our targets regardless.

He's also going to play a key role for Brasil in the Copa America which hopefully will bring the lad back buzzing with confidence for the new season.
He improved at the start of the season and then markedly under Dalglish and Clarke, i think given a full pre-season and a successful Copa America he could come back on fire.

I dont want to sell him.
I want to sell the dutty players.
