Aurelio :

Rafa Benitez today confirmed Brazilian full-back Fabio Aurelio has resumed training at Melwood.
The 29-year-old has missed the start of the 2009-10 season with a knee injury sustained over the summer, but Benitez revealed the defender is edging nearer to a comeback.

The Reds boss said: "Aurelio was training yesterday. I was watching him and he did well.

"He is not training with the team, but he is working with the fitness coach and is very close. We will have to see if he has any other problems, but he is very close."

Torres :
Rafael Benitez expects to have Fernando Torres available for Liverpool’s next Premier League clash at home to Aston Villa on Monday night.

The Spanish striker was forced to receive stitches on his eyebrow following an incident during the Reds’ 4-0 victory over Stoke City on Wednesday night.

But Benitez says he has assessed Torres’ situation and expects him to start at Anfield on 24th August.

“He has some stitches but he’s okay,†said Benitez. “He’s training with his teammates and I think he’ll be okay for Monday.â€

Agger :
Rafael Benitez has rubbished reports that suggest Liverpool defender Daniel Agger will be ruled out of action until November.

Agger looks set to undergo an operation on a back injury that has plagued him since March this year and forced him to miss the start of the season for the Reds.

But Benitez says that he expects the Danish international to return to action next month.

“Yes, he saw a specialist and maybe he will need an operation.

“I don’t think it will be long. If everything goes well it won’t take too much time, maybe a few weeks.â€

Skrtel :
Meanwhile defender Martin Skrtel has resumed training following his cracked jaw in the 2-1 defeat to Tottenham last Sunday, but Benitez is unsure whether he’ll have the Slovakian defender available on Monday night.

“He’s training,†Benitez continued. “We had to decide the other day but it was too soon to take ny risks. Okay, we’ll see on Monday.â€

What about Aquilani?
[/quote]

I haven't been able to find any recent (last two days) quotes yet.

We'll be a better team if when Agger, Aurelio and Aquilani are all fit.

Hoping for Triple A then?

Liverpool FC boss Rafa Benitez will choose between teenager Daniel Ayala, Slovakian Martin Skrtel and new signing Sotirios Kyrgiakos to partner Jamie Carragher in defence against Aston Villa at Anfield on Monday.

Skrtel is still in contention despite missing the midweek 4-0 win over Stoke with a fractured jaw.

Kyrgiakos, a £2million acquisition from AEK Athens, lacks match fitness, so Ayala could retain his place.

Liverpool provisional squad: Reina, Johnson, Carragher, Ayala, Skrtel, Kyrgiakos, Dossena, Insua, Babel, Benayoun, Gerrard, Mascherano, Lucas, Voronin, Kuyt, Torres, Cavalieri, Spearing, Ngog, Kelly, Riera.

OR

Liverpool's defensive worries continue with Dan Agger (back), Fabio Aurelio (knee) and Martin Skrtel (pictured, jaw) all missing through injury. New signing Alberto Aquilani (ankle) remains sidelined and boss Rafa Benitez could name an unchanged side to the one which beat Stoke 4-0 in midweek.

Aston Villa boss Martin O'Neill's injury problems could be easing with Luke Young back in training after a thigh problem and Curtis Davies (shoulder) to be checked before the trip to Anfield. John Carew missed the midweek game against Rapid Vienna with a virus and is doubtful while Wilfred Bouma (ankle) and Stewart Downing (foot) are both out.

I kind of hope we don't need him as it will mean we are doing well.

Aquallani will offer us much more than lucas, i can almost guarantee that.

Lucas has been performing well enough to be playing in our first team, but thats only because he has no current competition. Once a quality player steps in, i'm sure he'l take lucas's place.

Not harsh...someone that can step in and become more involved, chip in with more goals, drive forward, look to speed up the play will almost certainly replace one that does none of the above.

I've said it before and i'll say it again, when we're coasting, 4-0 up, and have no need to force a game, lucas is fine he keeps the ball flowing, when we're under the cosh, he's almost non-existent its infuriating.

I'm always of the opinion if the team is doing well don't fuck with it unless the team is doing well without one of the 'untouchables' (due to injury or whatever) they obviously slot back in when they are available again.

Well we just beat Stoke 4-0 and guess who helped us get to that position ? I'm looking forward to seeing Aquilani but that doesn't mean we should not appreciate just how well the 2009/10 Lucas is playing. You seem not to have seen our first two matches where Lucas stood out and instead be referring to the 2008/9 Lucas.

Get real. You don't spend £20m on a player and then fail to even give him a chance to get a regular place in the starting XI...

Daily Post - Quotes from Rafa.

Aurelio

RAFAEL BENITEZ is relishing the prospet of having Fabio Aurelio fit again after the international break.

Liverpool are next in action when Burnley go to Anfield on September 12 and the manager expects to have the Brazilian left-back back in his squad following the knee problem which has forced him to miss the start of the campaign.

“Fabio is back training and playing football,†Benitez said.

“After the end of the international break I don’t think he will have any problems and he will be able to be involved in normal training sessions and be in the squad.

Agger

“Daniel Agger is walking again after his back operation

El Zhar

Nabil El Zhar’s knee injury is also improving so that is very positive.â€

Aquilani

Benitez is also happy with the progress Alberto Aquilani is making in his recovery from injury.

The Italian midfielder made the switch to Anfield in a £20million deal from Roma last month but has spent the past three weeks continuing his rehabilitation at Melwood following the ankle surgery he underwent in May.

The 25-year-old is unlikely to make his debut before the start of October but Benitez said: “Alberto is improving. “We were talking before about six to eight weeks and after a few weeks his ankle is much better but he will need time. “He’s in the swimming pool and in the gym and working with the physios but he’s not jogging yet.

“We cannot put a date on things and it’s important to just see how he progresses. “We are checking on him regularly and he had a scan in the past week which showed he is much better. “It’s just a case of keeping an eye on him every day. When he does start to play everyone will see what a clever player he is.

Shit. I thought Aquilani make be almost ready after the international break. So not 6 weeks but 7 or 8 at least.

aquaman will not play until november at the earliest. aurelio coming back is great news as insua shouldn't play every game and i'd hate to see that fat bastard at left back.

someone should start a book on here as to how many games aurelio will last before he breaks down again.

doubt aurelio, agger and aquaman have ever had an injury free season

Not sure, but I think Agger did in 2006-07 - when he established himself as first choice ahead of Sami.

agger and aurelio are enough to take us forwards, despite what people are saying lucas hasn't been THAT bad so we can certainly cope for another month with him (aquaman).

that's why I feel we shouldn't count on him like he is some kind of messiah, if he comes into the team and improves it, great, if not we have to make do with out him. someone with his injury past shouldn't be relied on.

If Aquaman doesn't play until November (although they are saying October) then these are the games he'll miss :

September

12 Burnley (h)

19 West Ham (a)

26 Hull (h)

October

3 Chelsea (a)

17 Sunderland (a)

24 Man Utd (h)

31 Fulham (a)
