Funny story I got told today regarding Nunez. Apparently he's completelly exasperating. Not as a player or as a person (he's apparently very sound and very sweet) but more on his ability to learn English! Apparently it's raising eyebrows on the footy TEFL curcuit. Klopp is getting very pissed off. A friend of a friend me told me this...

I wonder though how important is it for a player to learn the language. I mean - I think it's vital but then again what do I know? It never did Coutinho any harm I suppose.

For Klopp, it is very important. I remember when he was at Dortmund, he ruled out managing in Spain, because he cannot communicate his ideas in Spanish.

Very disappointed if that is true, and I am confident it is true given it is from Red Astaire. How difficult is it to learn basic of any language? It is not like he has to write essays in English. All he needs to learn is basic vernacular related to tactics in English.

Isn't this exactly what was reported in the press like 4 months ago?

I'm sure he's trying. English isn't exactly easy to pick up

Suarez Coutinho Firmino spoke about 10 words of English after a few years, so why is it only being made such a big issue now it's Darwin?

And I doubt Diaz speaks much more than him tbh and he's been here 6 months longer.

God forbid what poor Taki had to go through.

Took Firmino like 5 years to learn English.
Some just have a hard time learning a language. I mean you have to have some sort of interest to learn it as well.

I remember being impressed by Luis Garcia. Took him about 6 months it seems.

Also, you don't really need a language test to determine that Nunez is daft.

No, to be fair I don't think it is the easiest to learn.

That said, other players seem to manage it, don't they? The basics at least?

We think they do. It's rare we see some players do the media circuit though.

I agree, I can understand that it takes time for players from Japan, South Korea etc.

Depends where you're from.

English being the most widespoke language doesn't make it the easiest.......

South Americans will naturally find Portuguese/Italian easier to pick up.
Chinese will naturally find Korean or Japanese easier.
Arabs will naturally find Punjabi or Hindi easier.
And the English will naturally find American English easier.

I'm sure he will get there. To be fair, I imagine he is stupid. Most footballers are stupid and some are even more so than others. This is the only real issue with him being stupid, and it will no doubt get sorted at some point.

He can still become a good player.
Who doesn't love Jason McAteer, except for Roy Keane.
He already is a good player, phenomenal player even.

I don't think learning the English language would've helped much with all the clear chances he missed, do you? And had he taken those chances he'd be sitting on closer to 25 goals than 15 and this topic of conversation wouldn't even exist.

Maybe not the clear chances, but maybe he would have made the right runs, been in the right places on the pitch if he could communicate with anyone other than Thiago.

Not everyone can learn 2nd or 3rd language just so easily. It doesn't mean he is stupid. The twat Bale, was arrogant in his time in Spain where he would refuse to interact with his team mates in Spanish

But that's what I'm saying, he got into many many positions where he was able to finish off a good chance without the need to know the language......I think what's more important is knowing how your team mates play and a lot of this comes from visualising in training.

Plus it isn't like he's the only Portuguese/Spanish speaker in the squad, we do have 2 other forwards who are fluent as well as Fab & Ali.....add AlexiMac into the fold.

There is a difference between learning English and knowing the basics to communicate the language of football. It might have taken five years for Firmino to learn to speak English at a decent level but he never had issues absorbing Klopp's tactics and delivering that and communicating issues to Klopp. I am betting it is that aspect which Klopp is getting frustrated at. I dont think he is frustrated at Nunez because he cant do press conferences in English.

Well hang on though, although as I said before, I am sure he will pick it up. It isn't the end of the World that he is slow at learning, it IS the rule at the club that players need to speak English. It has been for many years, and it is right that that rule is in place.

There have been much better players over the years who we didn't change that rule for.

Again, it will be fine though. As long as he scores more goals.

If the club deems it important enough, just pay big bucks for the best language coaches, 3 times a week. He will get it in 3 months, otherwise 6 or 12 or so on. He should pick up *something*, no matter how daft he is. It can't be that hard to learn basic conversational English.

The title combined with why the OP suggested the stupidity hits home to me. I know @Red Astaire means no malice so no worries.

I have a Doctorate in Medicinal Chemistry, my IQ is/was 152 and I’ve had a successful professional life but languages have been a real challenge for me. I’ve lived and worked in Switzerland, Germany and the Netherlands (and Sweden, but only 9 months) and being able to speak/comprehend and write German and Dutch has been a real struggle. My brain just isn’t wired the right way it seems. To make it worse my wife is a linguist, fluent in 3 languages and competent in two others (amusingly not Welsh despite that being where she was born and raised!), so I have had a capable teacher right beside me.

He may be stupid but some people just can’t do some things

Nonsense. It's one of the easiest languages on the planet to pick up. Just ask 90% of illegals getting off the dingies.

I really didn't mean any malice dude. I'm glad you saw that. True, my choice of vernacular could have been better but I can't change that now. As someone who taught English as a foreign language for four years in Japan - I'm telling you. It doesn't matter what IQ level you have. The brain is wired to communicate. Like a muscle. You just need to 'lift the weights' and put the time in. For some it's hard - I'll concede that point for sure. However, as someone who has also taught expression and comminuication to autistic kids and even one who has selective mutism - It's a Darwinism truism. The brain is wired to commuicate. In many forms but communication through verbalisation or indeed mime is second nature to us homo sapiens. I can put the blame on his teacher I suppose. After all there no such thing as a bad student... Only a bad teacher.

P.s 152? Really? - You must be in Mensa.... Like me... 😉

The only real question is.. has @Red Astaire been living under a rock? This is old news.
Hmmmmmmnm - Is it old news? I wasn't sure if was even 'News'..... . Actually the real question is (admittedly badly phrased by me) is would Nunez (or indeed any foriegn player) be a better player/team mate etc if said person bothered to learn the language of the country he or she is working in? Let's not forget - He's hardly trying to learn Welsh or some South Chinese/Vietnamese lingo like Teochew (That's my wifes famillies language and I've been on it for several years now - Even though only about 30,000 people actually speak it) . It's fucking English! He's living in England, Working in England.... He's been here a year.... Come on.... Ok blame the teacher then not the player. 😀
