Job security - arne

Jurgen Klopp was the best coach for my development. I think at that moment, I was ready to play. I'm not saying that no one believed it, but I think I was ready, and Klopp thought so too. He gave me the opportunity to play on the biggest stage for a very big club. He believed in me, allowed me to go out on loan to develop.

Jurgen just wanted the best for me, he made me play great matches in the Champions League and the Premier League. It was a remarkable period, he made me progress at all levels.”

vs.

"I think he [Slot] thought I was a good player, but I don't feel the trust was there as much," he continued. "In my opinion, the limited opportunities were down to trust and not ability.

=====

Klopp gave him his debut in the Champions League away at San Siro. He was only 19 then and it was a move to Blackburn on the back of Elliott's successful loan spell the previous season. That loan spell and the following season's loan at Hull helped fetch the ~ €15m transfer fee, not the 263 mins he played under Slot.

That’s more because of the person Klopp is and type of manager. He only played 540 mins during those 3 years though..
He hasn’t been given a chance by any Liverpool manager to make it at Anfield if we’re honest about it.

How is that a far comparison/gauge?

19 year old with 0 1st team experience vs. 22 years with 2 seasons in Championship. (And why is it counted as 3 years when he was away on loan for 2 full seasons?)

It's about how the player feels though.

Klopp may not have given him the most minutes, but clearly he felt part of the setup and felt like he would have been given minutes if the occasion rose. Contrasted to slot, who Morton believes didn't trust him.

Regardless of the truths, how the player feels is important. It speaks to the feelings of the dressing room.

If a peripheral character like Morton felt it, what about players actively left out?

If we get stuffed by Arsenal, does anyone think it will force things? I think the Fulham result was crucial to that, I think if we'd have beaten Fulham it might have given a bit of leeway, but to drop points against Leeds, Fulham and to then get well beaten by Arsenal, what then? We'd have capitulated against Chelsea, City and Arsenal, who are "supposed" to be our rivals. If we don't change things in January, we're stuck with this mess until the Summer, aren't we?
I'd say bar going back to a run of 9 losses in 12 games, I'd say fsg will hold out till the summer..
If we stutter like this till the end of the season and still some how finish in the champ lge positions then I'd fear we are stuck with him for next season

Morton is one that got away for me. I also think McConnell can make it, but he seems more of a holding DM than box-to-box like Morton. I hope we don't sell him too.

Quansah will end up being an England starting CB, I could see Morton coming back and being a good/very good CM for a Europa League level team, who knows if he has a higher ceiling.

McConnell has the highest ceiling imho, and one we desperately need to hold on to.

I dont think Quansah is good enough. But if he ends up being good enough then we have the clause and can sign him down the line with a new manager.

Could have been given a chance in 23/24 after the first successfull loan at Blackburn?

When we missed out on CL qualification the season before and were reconstructing the midfield by bringing in Macca, Szobo, Endo and Gravy?

Keeping him as a squad option (like what was done to him last season, blocking his move to Levekusen) would have only hampered his development back then.

Morton was most probably never making it at Liverpool but that isn't really the point. The vast majority of young players don't make it at Liverpool.

However, the academy also exists for players to eventually move on for a fee.

Yes, we are doing that with some of the players Klopp brought through, but the reason for that is how they were handled at Liverpool - being part of the first team squad, playing a few games and maybe a couple of loans as well.

If the young players don't get that experience as part of first team at Liverpool then not only are they definitely not gonna be one of those rare cases of players who actually break through here, but they also won't be generating much of a transfer fee either.

McConnell is 21 and barely featured for us, now has a failed Ajax loan under his belt.

I can't see him making it for us. Even as a bit part player. Slot greenlit his loan even knowing that we're very short at DM.

Speaking of McConnell, 303 mins under Klopp, 269 under Slot (and that is after he was blocked from moving out on loan last Jan transfer window because Slot was "impressed"

Ditto. "The manager prefers ready-made signings" - seems like his thinking is: their ceiling is not high enough or they won't make it here as 1st team regulars so I shouldn't bother about their development at all.

The Endo signing could probably have been avoided if he was given a chance imho. But thats hindsight.
But yeah, not loaning him out last season was a poor decision.

The conclusion is the same though. He hasn't really been given a chance to establish himself at the club.
He might not be good enough in the end, and its a moot point.

McConnell is highly rated at the club, Klopp and by Slot.
His loan at Ajax ended badly given that Heitinga was sacked. He was the sole reason for going there.

He has a chance imho. A loan to the Championship for the rest of the season would be brilliant for him. Returning this summer and developing under a new manager.

Slot rates him? So he's happy to send him out and not happy to recall him when he's getting no minutes? I can't see it.
Coming back as a 22 year old midfielder I just can't see him making it. He'll potentially have a decent PL career, but he's not good enough for us.

I do see the positives - we sold some surplus academy players to fund breaking the transfer record twice.

However the actual sales show a lack of squad planning.

Sold a starting quality CB - we now have a major gap and issue at CB
Sold a starting quality GK - no major challenge there but I don't think Marmadash has shown he is an upgrade, and is certainly worse with his feet
Sold a DM - have a gap in the squad at DM/CM
Sold an AM/RW - have a gap in the squad at RW

We clearly thought we needed to clear the decks to make these signings who on paper were exciting and things we don't typically do. But these were players in positions that provide a safety net and we now are in need of that safety net.

It's been reported several times that even Slot rates him.

Rio and Trey both have 10 appearances for us, they're doing ok for 17/18 year olds.

Yes, that's true, and that's why I'm not entirely convinced by that report.

It's obviously one sided and the truth as usual will be somewhere in the middle.

It's not actually unusual to have reports that a manager is not using the young players enough. The Academy has to justify and ultimately pay for it's existence while the First Team has to win trophies, so it's always going to be a slightly uneasy alliance.

I do remember a quote from Slot about McConnell.. and then he shipped him off. But I am very hopeful he returns and makes a good case for being in the squad next season, TBH I wouldn't say no to him returning now if he is not getting minutes at Ajax.

He has returned and is back at Liverpool. Its a shame he returned injured or he could have featured in the FA cup. Although that would probably have ruled out a loan to the Championship. But he is back and with the squad.

Oh interesting, must have missed that. Would be nice to see him on the bench and starting to get used. He's a lot more combative than Nyoni so maybe more of an option at the end of games.

Morton was always a player that was going to be sold. We weren't going to give him 20 games a season that he needs at this stage of his career to develop. McConnell will suffer the same fate (though Morton looks better).

It does look like a disconnect between the reserves and the first team has developed. Rio at the very least should have more minutes this season.

There will inevitably be some fallout because certain players can't afford to fuck around and wait, particularly given that clubs are forever propositioning and poaching young talent (including us). We were seen as a safe place because youngsters and their teams saw a clear route to the first team under Klopp - that is no longer the case.

That being said, it does look like there is some finger pointing going on behind the scenes. Slot has been a huge disappointment but the work by Hughes (and potentially Edwards) leaves a lot to be desired. No-one is coming out of this whole saga with their reputation intact.

The transfer window without an actual plan means Edwards and co need to be sacked. Slot refusing to use what he has at his disposal tactically and squad wise means he needs to be sacked.

I can't believe how apologetic people are of Slot, if anyone thinks he's genuinely brave enough to look beyond his usual 14-15 players they're having a laugh. 5 minutes here and there adding up to 10 appearances isn't that beneficial. Sure you get a few appearances like that to get used to the atmosphere etc, but when you see the kid get on against Leeds and do quite well, and then to hear Slot come out afterwards and say he won't be doing that too often, where's the encouragement? There is none. The only time he really comes out and mentions his young/fringe players is when he's got something negative to say or when he wants to play down their contribution. Everything is overly cautious and lacking in hope.
