Job security - arne

Morton was always a player that was going to be sold. We weren't going to give him 20 games a season that he needs at this stage of his career to develop. McConnell will suffer the same fate (though Morton looks better).

It does look like a disconnect between the reserves and the first team has developed. Rio at the very least should have more minutes this season.

There will inevitably be some fallout because certain players can't afford to fuck around and wait, particularly given that clubs are forever propositioning and poaching young talent (including us). We were seen as a safe place because youngsters and their teams saw a clear route to the first team under Klopp - that is no longer the case.

That being said, it does look like there is some finger pointing going on behind the scenes. Slot has been a huge disappointment but the work by Hughes (and potentially Edwards) leaves a lot to be desired. No-one is coming out of this whole saga with their reputation intact.
Well they hired him at the end of the day and things like bringing through prospects, player development, man-management and so on, should have all have been a massive prerequisite. We were never going to clone Klopp, but there were certain elements that needed to stay intact.

My bigger worry is even after getting rid of Slot, problems will remain like they do at United. Self preservation as under way from Edwards and Co. Klopp saw this coming and probably why he called an end so rather suprisingly?

I doubt it. Edwards was a big factor in our early success and Hughes has a track record of finding and signing talent.
Its about working relationships though, we know there were issues with Klopp and Edwards, so regardless of certain successes, there were reasons for friction too. We won't really know, but there's clearly been some power struggles in there and maybe that's what Slot is also experiencing now.

Not that I'm against cameos but there were quite a few that were less than 5 mins 😅

Rio - 10 appearances incl. 4 that were less than 15 mins (1, 3, 6, 6 mins)
Trey - 10 appearances inc. 3 that were less than 15 mins (1, 1, 11 mins)

I don't think that's necessaroly bad? The flip is that 6/7 appearances were more than 15 minutes. It's not a bad amount for their age, it's a bit early to judge really. Plenty of Klopps youth players played less and we still made decent amounts from them.

Could be, but Edwards is basically Hogan now and is on top of this whole thing. While we dont know for certain Edwards left because Klopp wanted more control over transfers if rumors are to be believed. Signing Darwin was a step away from the data model that had served us so well in the past, and he left.

Slot is hired as a head coach and has accepted that the sporting director and the people above him make the transfer and team moves in general, with his blessing. Its how it should be in all honesty.
Just look at Utd and the mess they are in for letting their managers be in charge of transfers.

Tbf they're not in a much better shape letting their board make the signings either

I'm loathed to defend Slot, but I can understand that even if a manager has accepted to work under those conditions, it can be frustrating if he feels he's working with one hand behind his back, if certain things aren't being met. ie, we'll never know if he had felt a defender or a DM was a priority last Summer, and we prioritised other positions instead. As much as I agree about the level of transfer control, it helps if the SD is on the same page (or near enough) as what the manager sees for his team.

Every manager in Europe work under those conditions and the sporting director though. Its only in the Premier league were some managers still have all the say regarding transfers. But there aren't many left here either.

Championing the academy, or championing making do with the expensive Swiss cheese of a squad we've got because there's no more spending?

I don't see how we can really take a side on any of this given we only are starting to know the issue because someone is in self preservation mode.

I think two long term injuries also stress the weaknesses of the squad building this summer, which could be seen as a bit of bad luck. At cb though, it's not forgivable.

For me it's not about picking a side. One side has to talk and constantly watch their words. The other can quietly snipe anonymously while conspiring with their friend. No one has a dof in front of a press conference four times a week answering the same question again and again about why their shit isn't working.

The haven't had to say anything, at all, since this all fell apart, and it's clearly transfer related.

This is all how I thought this would go, if it does go. It's unseemly, and will make the supporters hate whatever rat survives the sinking ship.

Morton's an odd one, because he's a passer who plays deep and we tried to sign Zubamendi and now have been linked with people like Wharton who do the same job. I'm not saying Morton is as good, or will be as good, but he's a type of player we don't have in the squad so why wouldn't he get an opportunity as a result?
I am all for bringing in youngsters but whenever Morton's played he has shown little to challenge for a spot, even when under Klopp.

Ngumoha as well, so far flashes but not enough.

Bradley is a starting right back so it's not like we have not been bringing them in when they are good enough.

Morton was all right, without being great. If he would have developed with more games, we will never know.
And this is a typical thing at Liverpool, where the demands are so high in terms of results and league position

All of them were alright. The problem is that Slot doesn’t do “alright,” and that’s become pretty clear. He has no interest in players who can simply “do a job,” something Quansah, Morton, Harvey, Endo, Chiesa, Ngumoha and others absolutely can or could do.

Slot essentially shot himself in the foot. From the start, he decided who was good enough and effectively sidelined the rest, and now it’s come back to bite him in the arse.

I sincerely hope he gets sacked, and soon. It's honestly not fun watching LFC with him in charge.

Higher chance of Enrique going to Man City?

=======

"Guardiola's City contract had been due to expire at the end of the 2024-25 campaign, but he signed a two-year extension in November 2024 which runs until 2027."

=======

"With a deal to 2027, PSG and Luis Enrique are set to enter negotiations over a new contract.

AS reports that in Doha, where the ownership is based and where all the important and strategic decisions are made, they want to offer him an unprecedented contract.

PSG's management plan to offer Luis Enrique a lifetime contract. "

Seems as though he wants a new challenge. City is a definite possibility. But we should be all over this. He has previously said he wants to manage in England.
