Roy Hodgson's job safe says new Liverpool FC co-owner Tom Werner
Oct 17 2010
Liverpool FC's new co-owner Tom Werner insists manager Roy Hodgson's job is safe and he will be given transfer funds.
Fellow co-owner John W Henry has also given his backing to Hodgson, whose side have picked up only six points from their opening seven Barclays Premier League games.
Werner, the chairman of New England Sports Ventures, who bought the Merseyside club for £300million this weekend, said: "He (Hodgson) needs to be given time. We have a lot of confidence in Roy."
He added: "Nobody can be pleased about the start of the season but the club ought to gel. We had a nice chat with him yesterday (Saturday) and look forward to talking to him tomorrow."
Werner, who revealed the new owners would be meeting supporters' representatives on Monday, added: "The one prescription for disaster is to lurch to the left and lurch to the right.
"We see no reason why Roy can't be our coach this year and in the future. We're certainly going to give him time.
"I don't want to make too many promises except that we expect the fortunes of the club to improve."
When asked if the owners would be providing Hodgson with "reasonable" funds, Werner replied: "Yes, absolutely."

You can understand it from their perspective. They have no clue about football and they've just taken over. It of course makes sense for them to have a look at things and get some sound advice from football people before making a move. Unfortunately, until now they've probably been briefed by Broughton and Purslow who appointed Hodgson in the first place. So it's unlikely they would have gotten a a negative report.
Also, I don't know if they realise the implications of a poor season for a club in football. In American sports, the playing field is far more level than it is in football with a salary cap and the draft. Hell, there are teams who 'tank' games to get a good shot at the draft. It's from that perspective far easier to revive a poor team in the American leagues. That's unfortunately not the case in the EPL at all. If we have a poor season, we'll have a mass exodus of players, and these people aren't sugar daddys that they can buy us a whole new team. It's imperative that they realise this immediately and get a sound football person on board and make the right decisions regarding personnel. Giving Hodgson more time and money to squander might turn out to be very very costly for them.
