Pep saying clearly that the team will be a mix of youth and experience.

Maybe (is there a valid reason we wouldn't use Philips ?) :

............................ Adrian

Williams ..... Philips ..... v.d.Berg ...... Tsimikas

............................ Grujic

............ Milner .......................Jones

Minamino ............. Origi ................... Jota

Bench includes : Thiago, Shaq., Elliot, Ox.,

"The team tomorrow will be a strong team. I feel some of you guys will be surprised, to be honest."

If we have some of the big guns in midfield / attack then hopefully it won't matter too much with VDB at the back.

I reckon it will be:

Adrian

N. Williams
Van den Berg
R. Williams
Tsimikas

Thiago
Jones
Milner

Minamino
Origi
Jota

Adrian needs really sharp scrutiny. He cocked things up for us in the CL almost as badly as Karius and without any concussion, yet Covid perversely saved him from taking much flak for it. He needs to show he's learning and improving, otherwise he needs binning pronto and replacing with Kelleher.

He won’t be here next season because he’s bloody rubbish.

In fairness to Adrian, he really played a blinder at the start of last season when Allison was injured. He's probably living off the credit from that.

But no one has a truly quality second choice keeper. They're all a bit inconsistent & have faults. Hence why their second choice.

Yes. I think you're better off with a young keeper than an older experienced one. If the young keeper is good then he'll have the hunger and the drive to improve, and there might not be those faults in his game. The older ones are only there because they've already proven they're not good enough to be a regular starter.

Did he? I could have sworn he was a walking mistake from the start. I may be misremembering but I could swear he made some horrendous fuck ups early last season

I don't think it is a coincidence that once Allisson came back after injury we started to rack up clean sheets.
I am not sure if Adrian had a single one in the league and definitely conceded lots

Fuck, maybe I'm rose tinting it.

I thought he did ok, we got through without any lost points and he helped out in the super cup penalties.

Ya he did more to cause us winning three trophies than losing one, every player involved in getting us over our 30 year drought deserves a pass.

For me I'd have kelleher as understudy. He's competent and needs to develop. Adrian just needs binning off

You are correct. He’s shite but thinks he’s good and deserves his shirt. It’s a god awful combination, ergo that absolute shitshow that cost us a genuine chance of defending our European title last season.

Do any of the top teams around have a young goalkeeper as back up? Dont think that would be a very good move in all honesty.
Adrian isnt the best, but he certainly isnt the worst either. As a back up he's about the quality you can expect to have for that sort of wage and expectation to never play bar some cup games.

City - Bravo
Utd - Romero/Henderson
Chelsea - Caballero/Kepa
Arsenal - some new Icelandic GK who has been horrendous in Ligue 1
Spurs - Gazzaniga/Hart
Leicester - Ward
Everton - Jonas Lossl

I'd say Adrian is good back up GK, and its not an area we need to think about in near future.

Just rewatched the Athletico highlights.

Yeah, he really fucked us there!

Game should never have reached extra time with the amount of good chances we had.

I watched the game, but it's all a blur, maybe the weight of covid amping up has made the memories foggy.

Hendo has come out a couple of times & said Adrian was a massive positive influence in the dressing room. I dare say that goes a long way when you're a player who should really only play the odd unimportant match.

Lovren was meant to be brilliant in the dressing room
