Youth & experience were his actual words. He did go on to say that the media would be surprised at how strong the team would be. Which is probably the inclusion of VvD - though why the fuck we need to risk him is beyond me.

This team selection for our 1st outing this year in the Fizzy Pop Cup is mostly what you'd expect. I don't know why Grujic is still with us, and VVD is a huge risk. I reckon Klopp wanted a senior in the centre of defence and the others are all still carrying knocks. I'm happy with all the others though.

I can see possible arguments for including Virgil. There's not a lot of captaincy material elsewhere in that team, besides which he hasn't started the season like the Rolls Royce everyone knows he is, so the coaches may think he needs more game time. It's a chancy one though.
