Arsenal U21s suffered their heaviest defeat in Premier League 2 history as they were thrashed 7-0 away to Liverpool today.

There were some mitigating circumstances, with some players such as Ife Ibrahim and Jack Porter unavailable after featuring for the U18s in the FA Youth Cup last night, but it was still a hugely disappointing defeat.

Arsenal gave starts to schoolboy midfielders Mishel Nduka and Emerson Nwaneri, with the latter becoming the club’s youngest ever stater in Premier League 2 aged 15 years and 152 days, beating the record that was set by his brother Ethan.

There were further debuts in the second half with schoolboy Angleinou Pedro and first year scholar Saurap Sampang featuring but it was another deeply frustrating occasion for the Arsenal academy.

Remy Mitchell made his first start of the season in goal, while Brayden Clarke was given the captain’s armband following Louie Copley’s departure on loan.

Seb Ferdinand, who usually plays as a winger, started in midfield with Charles Sagoe Jr up front.

Francis Hernández, the new sports director of the Honduras National Teams, is already aware of the case of Keyrol Figueroa, and once the new head coach is appointed, they will schedule a meeting with him in England to try to convince him to play for Honduras. Among his various projects, Hernández will seek out more Hondurans who are playing in other countries and hold dual nationality.

Francis Hernández isn't wasting any time and already has his first "Mission Impossible" in Honduras. The new Sporting Director of the Honduran Football Federation (FFH) has marked his first major objective in red: to travel to England and convince Keyrol Figueroa to forget the Stars and Stripes and wear the Honduran jersey instead.

The strategy is clear and ambitious. Just as he convinced Lamine Yamal to choose Spain over Morocco, Hernández wants to apply the same formula with the son of the great Maynor Figueroa. Several reports confirm that the Spaniard is already aware of the situation and considers bringing back the Liverpool youth striker an absolute priority due to his elite training, something that is scarce in the local league.

According to journalist Julio Cruz, the plan is already underway. Once the new coach is appointed, an in-person meeting with Keyrol will be scheduled in the UK. The Dutch Football Federation (FFH) knows they can't continue to embarrass themselves by losing national talent, and Hernández will try to entice him with a serious sporting project, just as he did with the Barcelona star and with Dean Huijsen (who chose Spain over the Netherlands).

“I did my job by conveying the project to Lamine and his family… we managed to convince him to choose Spain,” Hernández recalled about his past success. Now, Honduran fans dream that this same persuasive power will work with the heir to the Figueroa dynasty, who currently plays for the United States.

Charlton Athletic are delighted to announce the signing of Luke Chambers on loan from Premier League side Liverpool.

The 21-year-old, left-sided defender, who joins for the remainder of the 2025/26 campaign, becomes the Addicks’ third signing of the window following the arrivals of Harry Clarke and Lyndon Dykes.

Managing Director James Rodwell commented: "Strengthening our options on the left side of our defence and at wing-back has been a key priority during this transfer window, and we’re delighted to welcome Luke, a player we’ve been monitoring for some time.

"He is technically excellent, athletic and a progressive passer. In addition, we would like to thank Liverpool for their cooperation in allowing Luke to join us. We’re looking forward to seeing him in a Charlton shirt."

Manager Nathan Jones added: "It’s no secret that we’ve been working hard to bring in a player that can come in and contribute on our left side, including at left wing-back, so I’m delighted that Luke has joined us.

"He’s a talented, young, hungry player of real pedigree, having come through the Liverpool youth system and represented their first team, so I’m looking forward to working with him."

After putting pen to paper, Chambers said: "I'm over the moon. I know how passionate the fans are about the club and having played against Charlton last season, I know how good The Valley is so I can’t wait to get going.

"We’ve obviously got a big game on Saturday, so I’m looking forward to playing in front of the fans and showing them what I’ve got."

Born in Preston, Chambers joined Liverpool at the age of six and progressed through the Reds’ academy to sign his first professional contract in 2021, before winning the U19 European Championship with England the following summer.

After enjoying a successful loan spell with Scottish Premiership side Kilmarnock in the second part of the 2022/23 campaign, the defender was handed his Liverpool debut by Jürgen Klopp in the Reds’ 3-1 victory over Leicester City in the Carabao Cup in September 2023.

He then earned three Europa League appearances – including starts against Toulouse and Royale Union Saint-Gilloise – before spending the latter half of the 2023/24 season on loan at Wigan Athletic.

Having featured under Arne Slot during Liverpool’s pre-season tour in the summer of 2024, Chambers returned to Wigan on a season-long loan.

Liverpool did not sign any players to add to the 2025/26 scholarship group for the first time in years.

But I would not expect this to be the case next year as in addition wanting to tie down the futures of Joshua Abe and Erik Farkas, Liverpool will again seek to add the best players in the country to the academy in a more careful approach - Liverpool will only sign players at this age group if they think you have a real, real chance.

We might see Liverpool look to add a midfielder this time round but will face competition in Manchester City for one player in particular who’s transfer would be reminiscent of Trey Nyoni’s in Darren Motsi. The midfielder at just 15 has scored 3 goals in 4 games for Leicester’s U21 squad.

I would be less confident on the future of Vincent Joseph being at Liverpool. This is also factoring in the fact that Joseph could move abroad before turning 18 unlike his peers due to his German citizenship. The striker has represented both Germany and England at youth level. And there is widespread interest from England and from Europe, naturally, Germany.

Of course, a lot could change between now and Summer.

Kieran Morrison scored a stoppage time penalty to give Liverpool an important 3 points in terms of league position.

Tommy Pilling excellent this afternoon in terms of plugging gaps, keeping play ticking over with a valuable defensive contribution.

Ngumoha played 45 and was so, so dangerous. Good minutes.

Figueroa scores AGAIN to take his tally to 11 goals in 12 games. But he does also come alive in the box. A proper nuisance and seems to be improving.

Morrison, again, taking the mantle in the second half particularly providing threat through his whipped crosses.

WOW... Kieran Morrison scores a penalty – the last kick of the game. Not just a goal, it was the winning goal as Liverpool U21s beat Leeds.

And let’s not forget Keyrol Figueroa. He comes on as a sub, as he so often does, and scores to get Liverpool back into the game. His 11th goal in PL2 this season, making him the top scorer. He’s averaging 1.65 goals per 90 in PL2. Incredible numbers.

It’s also great to see Kyle Kelly back on the pitch. He returned from a long-term injury earlier this month and has now made his third appearance this season for Liverpool U21s. He was incredible against Arsenal – a great player.

Tommy Pilling was arguably MOTM and fantastic in midfield. He covered so much ground, won the ball back often and always helped defensively.

Carter Pinnington is also a strong shout for MOTM with some vital blocks to keep Liverpool in the game.

You could mention something positive about every player who started – Liverpool U21s dominated Leeds, but Darryl Ombang, the Leeds goalkeeper, was excellent.

Luca Eden - damn 14 yrs old and he's no make-weight in that U18 team. Good player at that level now - imagine in 4 yrs !
