Northern Ireland U17 goalkeeper Phoenix Blayney has spent the past month on trials at Arsenal and Liverpool.🤯🧤

Blayney currently plays for the U18s at NIFL Premiership club Larne and has represented Northern Ireland at U14, U15, U16, and U17 level.✅

He has also previously been on trial at Arsenal on two other occasions, trialled with Nottingham Forest, and has visited Brighton’s stadium and academy complex.😯

During his most recent trial with Arsenal, Blayney trained with the U18s and joined the U16s on their trip to Germany to face Bayern Munich and Eintracht Frankfurt.✨

For his trial at Liverpool, Blayney trained with both the U15s and U16s.🔴

What a move any of those clubs would be for him - definitely a player to keep an eye on.👀👏

Xabi wanted Chambers when he was at Leverkusen.

Stephenson also the sort of midfielder who can easily be converted to a RB - in fact, he has played there often I believe.

Klopp would have definitely given both these kids a chance to develop.

We're constantly going to be scrambling in the transfer market, until we show a genuine commitment to what Klopp always called 'internal solutions'.

These two kids are obvious ones - may not eventually make the highest level, but could become potential squaddies or provide some sale value down the road.

Irritated that Nyoni hasn't got any playing time this year either, given how much he was bigged up during preseason.

Yeah, I recall the links — Morton too, right?

When mentioning these players in my posts, I’m fully aware that the chances of them developing into another TAA — or even a Jones — are not high. But isn’t that what player development and youth teams are about? Trying to improve them as much as possible rather than simply writing them off?

I saw this tweet the other day and, while it opens up another debate, the point remains that failed loan moves and/or not taking the stage by storm initially shouldn’t result in players being prematurely written off or stripped of their confidence.

Absolutely.

The success of an academy isn't judged only by the top-end talent it produces, but also the volume of solid pros it generates. Conor Coady, Harry Wilson and Kelleher are also success stories for the club.

Quansah (35 million), Morton (15 million), Bobby Clark (10 million) wouldn't have happened if Klopp hadn't shown so much confidence in them.

Danns and Bajcetic have been brutally unlucky with injuries, but I think they would have easily been in that bracket. McConnell, Chambers and Stephenson all have the makings of decent pros as well.

Other examples showing why youngsters shouldn’t simply be written off based on loan spell performances/results:
  • Quansah only had half a season on loan at Bristol Rovers (League One) — 2 wins, 3 draws, 11 losses.
  • Bradley’s only loan spell was also in League One (Bolton).
Loan results don’t always reflect individual development or long-term potential.

Early indicators of potential suggesting they can become “solid pros”:

- 19 yr old Morton's debut away to AC Milan

- 19 yr old McConnell's debut vs. Norwich

- 20 yr old McConnell's CL debut away to PSV
