Sevilla have 5 good European trophies to their name and is by that alone a more competitive club than Arsenal, who again is just as competitive as Alaves With their one final appearance. The point Insig is making, as you must surely realize, is that the performance of Spain’s teams in Europe, besides Madrid and Barca, as in the teams that don’t usually win the local league title, have been far better than those from England’s teams that have played in Europe. I remember Everton coming 4th and not even qualifying for the group stages in 2006.
So are these not so glamorous clubs in Spain really worse than England’s? If they’re better, how can we say our league is more competitive (and in this instance, we’re talking about the duration of Messi’s career)? I think City playing the way they do, that consistency in attacking threat, very similar to the dominant Barca, proved last season and this season that what Barca and Madrid have done over in Spain is possible to do in England too, no matter what the level is in the rest of the league. We’re only leading them after having the best start to the season in our entire history.
That's why I've asked him a few times to list the teams by year, because it will show that cherry picking good Spanish teams from different points in history and grouping them all together is an illusion of fake competitiveness. You don't have to make one, it would take about
15 seconds of thought to imagine it in your head, and then see that Barcelona and Messi in any given season have to compete against far fewer teams that are genuinely capable of beating them.
But that is because they are damned good lately. Those teams struggling to beat Barcelona still beats the rest of Europe. 7 times out of the last 10 Barcelona or Real Madrid have won CL, which is a fair reference point. That Seville win EL and still struggle to beat Barcelona twice a year doesn't make the La Liga less competitive than PL based on that Burnely and Huddrsfield beat (European royalties) Arsenal every now and then....
