No Winter Olympics thread?

I know nobody cares about the winter games in the UK but we have 3 gold medals already...

Defago won the Mens Downhill, 22 years after Zurbriggen in Calgary '88.

Well done Didier!

And tonight the Hockey is starting

I'm looking forward terrifically to the hockey. Otherwise it's all a bit meh. I'll tune in, of course, but only in vain hope that Canada will actually do well.

I hope Canada will win at home but that Russian team is the best since the 80'...
That will be some tournament...A top 6 finish would be very good for us

Medals for slipping and sliding all over the place? It's madness I tell ye.

It's been called off, frozen pitch apparently.

I watched some of this last night, it was the ladies downhill race thing.
One chick got about 2 meters before falling and the other lady was zipping through the course and then flew for about 5 seconds before hitting the ground hard and falling all over the place, she wlked away so seemed ok.

But the thing that got me was the commentators, absolute shite. Everything reminded the bloke of some past olympics..
ooh that reminds me of gert whatever from the 1938 olympics, wow she was just like jenny bla from the 1984 olympics.
and the lady was also a div as she kept saying yeah ooh thats gota hurt I know cos it happened to me,
ooh she probably hurt her quads, I know cos it happened to me.

Also I would never do those 'sports' asking for trouble.

Pansy.

Great match from our swiss players. Only losing after penalties against Canada and all these stars is a great result.

Your guys showed up to play and Hiller was great.

I'm mad about not getting gold in women's skeleton, seeing as how she won 8 out 9 races pre-Olympics and had all the fastest times in training. Choke much?!?!??! Oh well, guess the Brits needed at least one gold.

I tuned into BBC2 last night and they had Ski Cross on. I had never, ever heard of this sport before. Wow, it looks fucking hardcore. Four guys racing each other on a track with jumps and tight corners. The winter Olympics really is superior to the summer effort I have to say.

Yea. I watched that too Stu.
It really was mad wasn't it.

They do that same sort of race on snowboards too, think it's been and gone though. When I was watching the skiing race I kept thinking of the start of a James Bond film, one of the Roger Moore efforts.

One other thing, is there any other sport that you can compete in to a high level while wearing jeans? Or is it just snowboarding? Or are they special sports jeans?

Tonight's the Canada-Russia hockey quarterfinal. If Canada loses, these games are a failure, regardless of what else happens.

I'm not feeling confident. Canadian national identity is predicated on the success of its hockey team. Thank god I have a surplus of self-adulation to get through the ego blow going medalless in hockey will bring.

USA-Switzerland before the Canada-Russia game... beating the yanks would be quite an achievement after what they showed against Canada.
DSE I really hope for you Canada win but that will be tough, its about time you play as a team.

Janka brought us our 6th gold in the Giant Slalom, excellent games for us so far...

Your team has played well at this tourney, Tony. But I agree that beating the Americans will take some doing. The USA performance against Canada was one of the best team performances I've ever seen. Everyone talked as though it was just a goaltending clinic by Miller but truly the spped, grit and hustle of that American team should make every Canadian player ashamed.

Totally agree with Canada needing to get some chemistry together. There has been none. Almost every player is underachieving. I'm not a Crosby fan (though he is an incredible player) but this team will go as far as Sidney can carry them on his shoulders and, thus far, he has not been delivering. He is the one player with the drive and skill to push the team and get everyone fired up.

(Ovechkin, on the other hand, singlehandedly turned Russia's tournament around with that hit on Jagr.)

I've girded myself for elimination so I won't be shocked or disappointed to lose tonight. A loss tonight will, however, be the biggest national crisis since the revolt in Upper Canada in the 1830's.

Crosby has 3 goals and 3 assists in five games, 3 points of which were in an 8-0 drubbing of Norway. Don't get me wrong, Sidney hasn't been poor but he has yet to impose himself on other teams the way he is capable of. And, much to my surprise, he wasn't the source of inspiration tonight.

Before the tournament I thought Ryan Getzlaf would be a huge player for Canada and he really stepped it up tonight. Massive performance.

The team that played tonight looked nothing like the loss against the Americans. The lines and chemistry have finally clicked and if Canada can maintain that level of play there isn't a team on Earth that can stop them. The combination of skill, size (avg height and weight are around 6'3" and 227 lbs, I believe), spped, and passion on display tonight was unbelievable. Didn't really think they had it in them, to be honest. Very, very happy to be proven wrong.

Actually DSE, down here, the USA V Canada game was widely regarded as the hot goalie beating the better team... Though USA undoubtedly deserved it for their determination and sheer bloody-mindedness, I think that Canada played better hockey for long stretches, but Brodeur (for once) failed in the big game, and that proved to be the difference.

After USA's very impressive win today, I cannot wait for Sunday - I think it'll be a cracking game!

I thought Canada were absolutely rubbish and the Americans played a fantastic counterattacking game. Canada certainly had more than enough chances and had more shots, but never looked in control of the game. Kesler's empty net goal epitomised it for me: Perry had clear position on him but Kesler wanted it more.

Absolutely shocked at how the Americans did today and very, very pleased for them. Hopefully we can get past Slovakia (I'm not looking ahead to Sunday just yet) and have that dream final.

2-1 now. Funny how the Yanks were going on about winning in the 1st round. Like England creaming themselves when they beat Germany 5-1 in a qualifier, prior to getting knocked out in the main tournament whilst Germany got to the final.

This has been a fantastic game.

2-2 into OT.

I hope USA do not win. It means so much more to Canada, and I can't stand hearing people who on the whole don't give a fuck about the sport crowing. Be the same if USA actually managed to do something in the world cup.

Sid should have won it 🙁

That'll make up for it though 🙂 What a guy.
