So the F.A (F for Franco or Fascist or something) are fining and threatening to ban Pep for wearing his pro Catalan independence ribbon, but he's saying they can stick it and he'll continue to support democracy and human rights.

But how does he square that with how he gets paid?

A journalist asked -
"But Pep; you talk a lot about politics there. You talk a lot about freedom. You talk a lot about Sheik Mansour. Sheik Mansour is a leader in the UAR, which is criticised for not recognising freedoms and the right to protest. How do you reconcile that?"

Pep answered -
"Every country decides the way (they) want to live for themselves. And if (they) decide to live (that way) themselves, it is what it is. I am in a country in which democracy is installed since years ago and I try to protect that situation".

I think it's called cognitive dissonance or something.

To be fair to the cunt, he's been sucking the Qatari cock for a decade

"I am very pleased to be representing Qatar’s 2022 World Cup Bid. I believe this is a truly unique bid, and a wonderful opportunity to spread the magic and the benefits of the world’s favourite game across the globe.
Having played in Qatar myself between 2003 and 2005, and having grown to love the country and greatly appreciate Qatar’s football development and infrastructure investment, I believe the time is ripe for the first World Cup to be held in the Middle East. My experience in Qatar, as well as the outstanding organisation and football passion we witnessed in the UAE during the Clubs World Cup, makes me confident that Qatar and the Middle East can host a spectacular, passionate and unforgettable World Cup that embraces all the FIFA ideals.”

No mention that the Qatar bid was then revealed to be the most corrupt, venal and bribe-happy World Cup bid in history, with every revelation and claim countered with vague cries of "racism", but no, they're boss, and it's Spain who Guardiola describes as "an authoritarian State" while Qatar is open, friendly and embraces all the FIFA ideals.

Well, he got that last bit right, at least. The fucking wanker.

He should just come out and say he only gives a fuck about Spain, at least he'd be credible then.

That's more or less what he said (I'm not defending him btw).

Yeh, but suggesting the people of Qatar want to live that way is just ridiculous.

FA’s Martin Glenn:

[article]To be honest, and to be very clear, Pep Guardiola’s yellow ribbon is a political symbol, it’s a symbol of Catalan independence, and I can tell you there are many more Spaniards, non-Catalans, who are pissed off by it.All we are doing is even-handedly applying the laws of the game. Poppies are not political symbols; that yellow ribbon is. Where do you draw the line — should we have someone with a Ukip badge, someone with an Isis badge? We have re-written Law 4 of the game so that things like a poppy are OK but things that are going to be highly divisive, and that could be strong religious symbols, it could be the Star of David, it could the hammer and sickle, it could be a swastika . . . these are the things we don’t want.[/article]

So a symbol has been a symbol for Judaism for x000 years is now compared with the swastika ... Fucking hell ... Can the FA ban him for 10 matches too?

I just learned today that Swindon were once sponsored by ...

Aren't poppies to commemorate the victims of the 'big wars'?

It's meant to be any fallen soldier now, but primarily based off WW1.

So, completely fucking political

Maybe I'm just ignorant, or missing something - isn't it a remembrance for fallen soldiers? Or is it seen as something else by the majority?

It is for fallen soldiers, but being British we think it's for British soldiers,, and that's ingrained in is from youth. wearing is as political and not wearing one, but obviously it's more accepting to wear one , ESPECIALLY in the public eye

James McClean I think gets shit every year for not wearing one.

Ahhh - ok the McClean thing I get (he doesn't want to remember the soldiers that he saw in Ireland) ... It's complicated ... Both sides can be respectful, but human beings are (in general) shit at that!

Definitely

McClean has his reasons which I understand and can empathize with.

As much as we laugh, it's similar to trump equating protesting the national anthem with hating the troops. At least with the poppy it's actually ABOUT soldiers, but the hysteria and rage is the same....for 3 weeks beforehand.

Personally I don't mind him pushing a free Catalonia. It's what the region wanted overwhelmingly and voted for.

If you can't protest in a public space, then what's the fucking point?

Honestly, I agree ... protest like this is a-ok (especially when it does no harm to anyone), but it would eventually get uglier (see "human being" comment I made earlier).

It's very political in NI (everything fucking is there). Most people wear it for the reasons why they're sold, whereas others definitely wear it to show what side of the spectrum they lie on. Especially in the work place where a lot of symbols aren't allowed but the poppy is. I used to work with a woman who got one for her lab coat. She was one of the most sectarian people I had ever met, she wasn't even from NI, she was from Glasgow.

It's definitely more of a 'thing' these days if you don't wear one. There wasn't so much of a deal about it in the past.

For a PepsiCo-trained marketer, Glenn is remarkably tin-eared.

It's ok he's apologised and said his intention was not to offend. His intention is relevant here, because it is. When he wants to ban one of our players, well obviously intention plays no part in that charge as it's obviously strict liability in that non-comparable instance. Fucking cunt, that's a third pavement to clean up after I smash his head into it.
