Pep Segura has quit

1. If Rodgers (or even Henry/Werner/Ayre) rated Segura(or his work) highly enough, why hasn't he 'promoted'/'appeased'?
2. Rodgers has close to 20 yrs of experience in youth football - should have contacts/info
3. Opportunity for Rodgers to carry out his blueprint for a Liverpool academy (rather than 'Barca MK 2' academy)? 😛

Bit unexpected.

I'm guessing that they have other plans as they'll have known that his resignation was likely to be forthcoming.

Time will tell if it was a good decision or not I suppose.

PEP SEGURA has ended his three-year association with Liverpool after quitting as the Academy's technical manager.

The 51-year-old cited a desire to return to his family in Spain as his reason for wanting to step down from his role in Kirkby.

However, the ECHO understands his decision was also influenced by the fact he missed out on a more senior role at Anfield this summer.

When Liverpool were searching for a new boss in May following the sacking of Kenny Dalglish, Segura looked set to be promoted to technical director to work alongside the manager and a sporting director.

However, those plans were shelved by the owners when Brendan Rodgers made it clear that having total control would be key to him accepting the job.

Segura arrived at Liverpool in June 2009 after a spell as manager of Olympiacos. He boasted an impressive CV having started off his coaching career at Barcelona.

He was involved with the youth set-up and the B team at the Catalan giants, helping develop players of the calibre of Andres Iniesta, Gerard Pique and Cesc Fabregas.

His style of play was implemented throughout the age groups at the Reds' Academy. He was responsible for coaching the coaches and his philosophy led to acclaimed improvements across the board.

In the second half of the 2010/11 season he took over the reserves on a temporary basis but last summer reverted back to his main role as technical manager.

The search for his successor will begin shortly but in the short term Segura's sudden departure shouldn't have any great impact as the Academy will continue to follow the programme he put in place.

I'm not sure I like this idea that youth coaches/professionals should always be looking to work with the first team to progress their careers. IMO having a strong academy is one of the most important things at the club, potentially even more important than the first team coach. If this guy was crucial to our setup (and maybe he wasn't - it's hard to know) then we should be willing to pay him accordingly; so not promoting him as such, but promoting the role he's in in terms of prestige and financial reward.

It'd be a crying shame if progress at the academy is hampered by this.

He should have presented them with a dossier.
Macca, I wasn't happy about Kenny getting sacked either but for your health and sanity you really need to get over it.
Rodgers is not responsible for his sacking.
It's done mate and nothing is going to change the fact.

Yup ... Let's hope one day, we look back at this in the same way our parents looked at the arrival of shanks.

Segura wanted to be more involved with the first team, so the Acadamy would have been in need of someone new in his role regardless.

Seeing as his main job was to implement the systems and set up the youth acadamy after his ideas, you'd guess its pretty much all in place as he wanted a different challenge.

Its a kick in the teeth to lose someone as Segura, but I dont think the acadamy will implode because of it.
Barca have done alright after these guys left... So if we get in someone of the same mold I think we'll be fine. The set up will hopefully continue as planned regardless.

But why did he want to be more involved in the first team? Why shouldn't that role be seen as important as any other? There seems to be an acceptance that such a job can only ever be a stepping stone to 'bigger' things - why? It seems pretty crucial to me.

Agreed mate, and I've got no idea. He was manager for a while at Olympiakos, maybe he had his heart set on working more with the first team before taking over a team again.
