Pepe's Goodbye Letter

Yes, you're right @Bradley I've held my tongue for long enough.

Reina was a terrific keeper until about three years ago. He hasn't been the same since then, hasn't been really good enough for an ambitious club during that period and I see no evidence to suggest he's going to reach the heights of 2006/2009 again. So from a purely footballing perspective, I am ok with him leaving.

In terms of loyalty and sentiment, he made his bed himself. Firstly, he flirted outrageously with our rivals a few years ago when our decline began and we needed the supposed 'big personalities' and 'big players' to be resolute. None of them came in for him and he was left disappointed at Anfield, allowing his weight, fitness and form to deteriorate. Then more recently, he became aware of Valdez imminent departure and once again his hopes of a move were raised - I expect his slight improvement in condition and form during the second half of this year had nothing to do with that (LOL). Now Barcelona has decided that they don't really fancy him either (and if they ever do it's clearly seen as a stop-gap) and they'd rather have an unhappy and uncommitted Valdez in goal for one more year than take Reina now.

While all of this is going on, while he actively looks for a move to clubs he sees as bigger or more successful than us, he expects us to sit with our thumb up our ass and watch passively. Errr... well no Pepe. The amazing thing for me is that while he's been doing all of this, some of our fans have refused to believe he's anything other than a noble and heroic figure. I clearly remember people on here in complete denial that he was angling for a move to Man Utd or Arsenal even after he'd given an interview and said so! And the bloody recording was posted here so people could hear it!

In my mind all of this, including the letter, just confirms what I've long thought about him. He's just full of himself. He sat down and wrote a letter to us, supposedly to say goodbye but couldn't even avoid making that all about himself, which shows how little class he really has. It could have been a nice touch but he showed once again that he's a bit of a twat by trying to undermine the management.

Good bye Pepe.

What a ridiculous character assassination of one of our best ever keepers. How is saying that working for a manager who won us the European cup and the FA cup and got us as close to winning the title as we've come in decades is the best manager he's worked with acting the twat? Maybe, you know, he became as disillusioned with the way the club's being run as the other top players who have looked to leave. If you ask me he's gone to an ambitious club, not left one.

Where I think I would defend Reina is that I don't think his position of being rather torn between loyalty to a declining club and the natural desire to fulfill his ambitions is incredible or even unsympathetic. Gerrard obviously felt it pretty keenly too, and it's turned out he was right. It must be a bit agonising for them, even if in general they're among the luckiest people on the planet.

I don't particularly remember all the circumstances - whether or not he showed any loyalty at all or if he only stayed because there was no interest (I tend to doubt it) , but it's a rare person who'd have had no misgivings having seen the rapid decline we went through. I dunno really. I suppose I just find it hard to be that cynical about him.

don't remember this attitude taken when Alonso left , shame as far as I'm concerned coz he was much much better the second half of the season and we will miss his ball skills badly imho. 31 too old for a keeper - what utter bollox

I can't believe some of the lack of respect shown by some to reina in this thread, almost a splattering of glee that he, one of our best players over the last years, has gone. Cowardly squad players have generated more respect in the eyes of some. Thank you pepe. Thank you for the games, the passion and taking the time to write to us. Ynwa.

I cant believe some of the sheer lunacy displayed at fairly pragmatic and reailstic analysis of what's happened here. Just because you doesn't agree, doesn't mean it's a 'lack of respect.'

YNWA!

When you write those kind of letters, you can't complain about the results. I'll miss him for sure. We may regret his departure but it seems like a natural progression right now..

What is quite funny is the picking and choosing of hero's. Our Uruguan cunt is a whore who disrespects the club and puts his ambitions first, whereas Pepe has been whoring himself out for quite a while now but when no one bids for him, he fattens up, plays shit, is a terrible role model for the youth players and suddenly pulls his finger out when it's rumored he might get his dream move, then he is said to have been treated with disrespect because LFC covered themselves and replaced him. As is often stated on here, by quite experienced supporters, WE ARE LIVERPOOL! If footballers fancy jumping ship when the club is facing hard times and dark hours, fuck 'em when they come looking for their big pay day.

I have been asked what my favourite Liverpool moment was and if I had to pick one it wouldn’t be a save or winning a trophy. It would be my celebration against Manchester United when David Ngog scored a late goal. That is probably the quickest I have ever run in my life! It shows what playing for Liverpool meant to me and also that there was nothing better than winning a big game at Anfield.
Can't forget this!

David Ngog admits Pepe Reina surprised him as they celebrated his goal for Liverpool in victory over Manchester United.

Liverpool's team spirit was epitomised when goalkeeper Reina joined in the celebrations for Ngog's goal when the three points were guaranteed Liverpool's way.

"I was surprised because the first person to celebrate with me was Pepe but that shows you just what this victory means for us," he told liverpoolfc.tv.

"This was a big moment for the team and everyone wanted this victory. It shows how good the team spirit and togetherness is."

So him getting a proper farewell during the Olympiakos game is now out of the question?

Thanks @gene hughes for clearing up your stance.

I liked him up until the point when he was on stage during the Spain celebrations acting the maggot. Not sure why that pissed me off, but it did.

Reina should be giving lessons to other footballers.

How to whore yourself out and still be loved by the great unwashed.

I actually wouldn't deny him a decent send off(although I can't make the game), but he has no right to whinge and expect a heros farewell when he was ready to drop us like a hot coal
P.S. Although Rafa is forever written in our folklore, there was no need for the reference to him, a cheap shot, in my opinion.

Well, it plays to your "Rafa is holier than thou, and the club is sinking with Rodgers at the helm" view.

He's gone to an ambitious club? You mean he's gone to where your fucking hero is. Change the record FFS and try offering an ounce of support instead of wasting every breath on here telling us how we're on the slide, blah blah.

It a self serving, petulant, masquerading note that was meant to be a 'goodbye' for the fans, instead it was Reina telling us how he didn't get his own way, so him in Rafa are pretty much welcome to each other, like peas in a fucking pod.

Utter garbage. I support the team a Damn site more than most posters on here. In time, effort and money. Fuck you.

Dangerous levels of superfan in this post.

We all support the club. We all love the club. We all want the club to succeed. Just because someone doesn't agree with you, doesn't mean they're less of a fan than you.

Well done, you support the club with time, effort and money. So what? So do I. I am a season ticket holder and buy the shirts every year. Do I take this to mean I'm a better fan who buys dodgy shirts off the Internet? Or someone who can't go to games

Course it doesn't.

There are people who envy the fact I can go the games when I take it for granted. People wish they could afford to buy the legitimate shirts, but finances won't allow it.

Because I'm lucky enough to be born in the same city, nay, the same country as the team I love, does not make me a better supporter than a majority of lads who don't have the opportunity.

Yeah you've said, a few times. Well done you, shame for all the money/support you give, you can't help but fucking moan about everything the current manager does. It's your hero who started this mess.

Does anyone else kinda feel like they don't really give a shit what a player says or does any more, as long as they're playing well?

I mean, it sorta used to mean something to me, like the first interview with a new signing where they'd say all the right things and speak well of the club and the fans, but now it just feels like if they do that it means they've got better PR people schooling them on what to do and say.

Pepe's had a little bit of a dig here, but to ve honest I don't really give that much of a shit. He's not the same player he was - and that's not to take away from the fact that he has been great, and is still good - but gone are the days when you look forward to a penalty shootout because you knew he'd save a couple.

Will this new guy he better? Who knows, hope so. I'd settle for as good as to be honest, but I'm not gonna get arsed about how he left or whether he flirted with anyone else, just par for the course with footballers these days I guess.

It's same with Suarez - yes, he's a massive twat, but he's a massive twat who is really good at football. If he stays, cool. If we fuck him off then as long as we get loads of money and don't get stitched like we normally do then that's fine as well
