"We have a plan," he told the Liverpool Echo. "We can sign one more player if necessary, but that's without any players leaving.

We could have a field day reading between the lines of that!

I'm happy with that hopefully its a left winger and with the money he gets from selling the deadwood we can get a back up for Torres.

Reading between the lines of a one line quote is contortionist behaviour ...

Ha ha...but you know what I mean.

i'd be happy with another marquee striker and a winger....cos if Torres is injured we'd be screwed (as we all know). We haven't replaced Keane yet...

The full Echo article:

LIVERPOOL boss Rafa Benitez admitted today that his £17m capture of Glen Johnson was more than he wanted to spend on a full-back.

But he also revealed that the huge outlay does not signal the end of his summer spending.

With Chelsea also willing to pay Portsmouth’s asking price for the England defender, Benitez admitted: “Sometimes you have to spend a little bit more.

“You can’t compete in the top four of the Premier League unless you spend some money.

“We were looking for a player of quality and also somebody who is British because of the new Champions League rules.

“Glen Johnson fits both categories.â€

The player has agreed a deal with the Reds and is expected to formally put pen to paper in the next 48 hours.

And he may not be the last new face at Anfield this summer.

“We have a plan,†added Benitez. “We can sign one more player if necessary, but that’s without any players leaving.â€

Benitez is bracing himself for a bid from Real Madrid for Alvaro Arbeloa. but he is also concerned by the increasing speculation surrounding midfielders Xabi Alonso and Javier Mascherano.

The Reds boss has made it clear that he would not welcome bids for either player, but while Real have publicly stated their interest in Alonso has ended, Barcelona are refusing to give up on Mascherano despite Benitez’s very firm hands-off warning.

First to leave, however, could be Arbeloa.

“Alvaro Arbeloa has had a very good season but he has one year left on his contract,†said the Reds boss. “If he signs that will be good because we will have more competition, but if we get a good offer we will have to consider it.â€

Benitez is also hoping that on-loan players Sebastien Leto and Andriy Voronin could bring in more transfer funds, while a return to Italy for Andrea Dossena is also on the cards.

I think that's a very decent interview by Rafa.

Everyone knows the prize is in the deep end but we also know that's what the best English-players will cost any interested parties.

I think it's a massive sign to send out to our opponents that we didn't back down on this Johnson-deal even though the prize got inflated as one would expect given the circumstances.

We mean business.

Mean business.

I reckon the boss has got about 10-15mill left in the kitty, so if he wants a top quality forward then he needs to ship out a couple. And if he sells one of Xabi/Masher we'll be alright for cash.

Well, yeah, except we'll have a massive gaping hole in midfield to fill.

Plan?

interesting, maybe a loan signing in Downing and the money he has on one world class signing. Or maybe a signing for free, owen maybe.

Once again, I'd welcome Darren Bent.
Cant argue.

Bent would be a good option but surely if Rafa was interested he would've went for him in January in part exchange for Keane.

I read somewhere that pavlychenko wants leave too so he'd be more involved in the starting eleven. They'd probably want a fortune for him aswell.

Will someone like Insua count as homegrown in that 6+5 rule?
Yes he will. Insua, Gerrard and Carragher will. But thats it first team wise.

When does this rule kick in?

2010/11 i think.
Cheers, so we'll have Carra (If he still has the legs), Gerrard, Johnson, Insua and that's it from the current first team squad, right?

So is Rafa basically saying that's it? Unless Xabi or Mascher leave, and until one does then he just replaces them?

I'm very surprised Rafa gave that piece of information up. I always suspected he had the funds for another player purely because I dont think he'd spend it all on Glen Johnson.

However, stories of our financial demise can only strenghten our position in negotiations.

Anyway, its out now.

Rafa, we need another player and yes it is necessary and he needs to play north of the midfield.

Yea, Portsmouth definitely treated us like a charity case.

Come on Paddy, did you even read the quote?

"We can sign one more player if necessary, but that's without any players leaving"

We can look forward to one more signing, unless Xabi/Mascher leave..then we can expect more.
Which I am quite happy with really

Ah right. I got a wee bit confused.
Thanks Asim.
