Rate the summer window

I can remember sitting round the table for a debrief and hearing about how the club believed the transfer window we'd just executed would be transformative, a huge step forward in getting us back to where we needed to be.
We had just signed:
Adam Lallana
Dejan Lovren
Lazar Markovic
Alberto Moreno
Mario Balotelli
Emre Can
Rickie Lambert
And we'd brought in Lord Divock after his loan back to Lille.
I feel, to say the least, a tad more optimistic about this window.
It was transformative. It led to the appointment of Klopp roughly 14 months later.

RAAAAATINGS...

Adam Lallana (Decent in the end)
Dejan Lovren (Memorable, but below decent in the end)
Lazar Markovic (JAAAAAYSIS)
Alberto Moreno (JAAAAAAYSIS)
Mario Balotelli (JAAAAAAYSIS)
Emre Can (Good).
Rickie Lambert (Wished it wasn't JAAAAAAYSIS, but it was)

Bit harsh on Moreno.. he clearly loved the club despite his errrmmmm limitations.

Was he? From what I'd seen and read he was very average at a poor side
Yes, he was in a very poor (ultimately relegated) side, Las Palmas, but he did stand out for them. I watched a vid of a guy going through his numbers, and his defensive stats were excellent, but the progressive stats poor. Partly that's playing for a poor team struggling to maintain any kind of possession, but I suppose the problem then is that the loan isn't helping to develop the playmaking side of the game he'll need for us. This guy thought he'd benefit from another loan, but I do wonder since we've hung onto him whether Slot wants him as cover.

The first mistake was loaning him out to a Spanish team. I still don't understand why we didn't send him to the Championship. If he's going to play in England, let him adapt to English football.
Anyway, last I checked, he was still doing rehab and hasn't joined team training.
I think this international break could be good for him and hopefully he'll be fit enough to play in the league cup.
This kid is a gem, I hope Slot sees that.

Most players mentioned him for being notoriously late to meetings and training. I think he lacks the level of professionalism to make it under Slot. The talent is there but not sure about the work ethic.
Lets see if he can get a chance in the first half of the season. Surely its his last chance before getting sold.

9.5/10

Almost perfect, half a mark lost for the failed Guehi transfer, in another window we'd have probably sold Gomez and not got Guehi which would have been a disaster so well done Hughes and Co for not falling for that trap

Yes, there are no excuses for him in respect of upping the professionalism. That shit counts for a lot for coaches and fellow professionals.

It's a shame because in terms of skill set he seems to match exactly what we need.

Still hoping he can turn it around.

I think Nyoni will eventually be the backup to Grav. Or maybe even McConnell. I'd be amazed if Bajcetic makes it.

But I suppose Slot eventually giving decent minutes to Chiesa gives hope to them all.

Nyoni is a great shout. Highely rated and I remember a few journos saying he would be ready to make the step up soon. Great sign that he's considered a full first team member this season.

Feels like we are keeping Bajectic until January so that we can get him into shape and either sanction a loan or transfer when that happens.

It's obviously not a 10 because we went for a player and didn't get him signed, but assuming that was our only misstep, it still looks like a great summer of business so would rate it as a 9.

That's bonkers to me. What if we'd signed Lamine Yamal and Mbappe as well as all the others but still missed out on Guehi? Would have to be a 9 as well right, cos it wasn't perfect from a box ticking point of view?

You've got to look at things in the round.

It surely has to be a 10/10.
It’s unprecedented to sign these type of players, upgrade, sales and still have a lower net spend than Arsenal and only 70 mill more than Utd.

You go the shops for ingredients for dinner. You come back with the best quality ingredients, better than anything you've ever bought before; but you've forgotten/lost in transit the herbs . Is your partner elated? Probably a bit annoyed

The meal you cook will still be absolutely delicious....but it could have been better.

In no way am I unhappy with this window. But could I be happier? Of course.

My logic was that we didn't get the extra defender that we clearly wanted, so it can't be perfect.

However, in writing that, it just occurred to me that my logic would fall down if we had signed a terrible centre back rather than Guehi, and now I can't look beyond that. So I will concede.

The point is you can look at it just from a box ticking perspective or a star signing perspective or some mix of the two, and probably loads of different perspectives as well.

IMO getting two absolute mega signings in the door in one window is so far beyond reasonable expectations that a lot more would have had to go wrong with the box ticking part than just failing to sign Guehi to make the window less than a 10.

I can not be arsed with arguing over whether is it was 8, 8.5, 9, 9.5 or 10 out of 10 window - we would be better off debating how many angels can fit on the head of a pin, or, even, how to define World Class.

HOWEVER - one clear and objective indicator of the success of this window is that it is now 2 days after the transfer window closed and we are yet to see the annual thread about players who ended up out of contract and we could potentially pick up - none of which ever happened, btw. This may be the first time in SCM history (*) such an ill fated & worthless thread has not happened, and long may we continue in that vein.

(*) I may be exaggerating, but it feels right

We've spent more money than we ever did before in a transfer window.
We perhaps paid more for some players than we thought we should have done - market forces and all that.
Some of the players haven't set the world on fire yet, that is normal.
We didn't sign anyone who any of us thinks is shit.
We signed players that other big teams in Europe were desperate to get their hands on. When they knew we were interested, those players only wanted us. That speaks volumes of the ground work we've done.
Isak was a bit of a nob to get his deal done, but he's shown no signs of that kind of attitude before so it feels like the no dickheads policy has been complied with.
The biggest let-down is the deal that fell apart at the last minute which wasn't really our fault and was for a player who we'd all like to see in Red, because the lad is a fucking great defender. He'll probably still join us, and we'll spend even less to get it done.
We got rid of some of the players we were divided on (principally Darwin and Lucho).
We said goodbye to Harvey, which is a sad moment for some of us, but probably the best outcome for everyone as he wasn't getting, nor going to get, enough game time.
The prospect of what this team can do when they click - if we could bottle that the world wouldn't need viagra.
Fuck me, if we can't be happy after that kind of a window, we're never going to be.
