Haven't seen this kid play but the tag "new Walcott" doesn't exactly fills me with confidence

I was kinda thinking that as well.

If Arsenal were to sell Walcott in the summer, what do people think he'd be worth?
[/quote]

£12m at a push.

More than SWP.

I don't know what he'd be worth but he'd cost a lot more than £12m.

I still think he can become a very good player too. Wasn't he in excellent form early this season before the injury?

Exactly. I wouldn't pay more than about 8 mil to be honest. He's injury prone and hasn't exactly been a great success.

I also think it's amusing that people are clamouring over the next Walcott, Bale, Ramsey, Lennon, Johnson when none of them (bar Bale who I also think needs to prove that he can sustain his form) have set the world on fire.

I wouldn't pay 10 million for any of them today (bar Bale again). Forget spending 10 million on their second comings.

So if we're spending 10 million on this Chamberlain, he better be fucking good. If not, I'd much rather spend 5 million more on someone like Costa, Turan, Hazard, Elia etc. i.e. someone who's already an established regular and may just be the next Messi/Ronaldo.

I always wonder what goes on in 'preparing a bid'

Is someone polishing it and someone getting a nice box ready?

A matter of opinion. There are risks involved of course but it is really the only way to get the very best of English players. If he doesn't turn out to be completely shit he can still be sold on to Birmingham etc. for a decent price anyway.

Been visiting a few Southampton sites, and while they do seem to rate him, a lot of them do point out that he's only played 14 first team games so far. Also, some of them seem to rate their other winger Adam Lallana more highly than Chamberlain:

Adam Lallana Southampton Superstar

What's the magic with the name Adam these days ?? Adam Hamill,Adam Johnson,Adam Barton,Adam Lallana,Charlie Adam...

on the contrary, i'd say every one of them has been very impressive and well worth the money paid. walcott i'd agree has been slightly disappointing, but he's still shown plenty of potential and a lot of the disappointment has been down to injuries. still looks a relative bargain for what arsenal paid, though.

if i was to judge the wisdom of signing this chamberlain lad purely on the success of similar previous transfers then i'd be absolutely all for it.

Here are their stats since they’ve made the jump to the Premiership

Ramsey – 49 appearances, 5 goals, 6 assists (3 seasons)
Walcott – 149 appearances, 24 goals, 21 assists (5 seasons)
Bale – 95 appearances, 16 goals, 16 assists (4 seasons)
Lennon – 209 appearances, 19 goals, 49 assists (6 seasons)
Johnson – 43 appearances, 6 goals, 8 assists (2 seasons)

Bear in mind they’re all wingers/attacking midfielders. Now that’s definitely better than what we’ve got. But I’d argue that they’re about the level of a N’Zogbia or a Valencia. None of them have shown (and they’ve all spent a considerable amount of time in the Premiership now) that they can reach the level of Ronaldo, Robben, Pires, Ljungberg, Malouda i.e. the pre-eminent wingers in the Premiership – who can/could chip in with about 10 goals and 10 assists per season. I’d value them thus at 10-12 million at best. Today. Considering they were all bought for 6 million or less, that’s decent value I suppose. But if we’re spending 10 million on Chamberlain today when his potential (assuming so) is that of a Walcott/Bale/Lennon/Ramsey, I’d say no thanks.

So unless Chamberlain is available for 5 million or so, I’d stick to buying the Shelveys, the Sterlings, and the Hammills for I’m sure they can reach the level of a Walcott/Bale/Lennon/Ramsey.

This is nothing more than a gut feeling, but I think AOC will turn out a better player than Walcott.

Actually I know why I think that - his face. Ugly motherf***rs like that always seem to have more drive, energy and guts than good looking boys.

Ugly people have to be successful in other areas dont they? Its character building.

Sometimes I curse these looks of mine giving me a free ride through life.

Ive decided 'The Ox' is the black Steve Stone. With pace. He will go far.

Just had an e-mail from my Spurs pal (who called the Joe Cole deal a few days before it was announced) that we've agreed a deal for Chamberlain. He says that Spurs expressed an interest but baulked at the negotiated price (around £7.5m + add-ons).

Not tied up yet as Arsenal also interested but haven't yet matched our offer either, but deal close.

*fingers crossed*

Hmmm. Not overly thrilled. But excited nonetheless. I really hope this lad isn't too far away from the first team.

He's about 200 miles from the first team.

looks like our plan is to tread water while our outstanding kids mature. fair enough, as long as we're not treading water in the championship...because that would suck.

christ, spare me the stats ffs.

simple question, for the money paid, which of bale, walcott, johnson, lennon and ramsey look like anything other than good signings?

none would be my answer. which look like absolutely excellent signings?

bale, ramsey and lennon would be my answer.

i really think your argument's dead in the water.

also, i just noticed that you think those guys are all in the £10-12m bracket - surely you jest? all of them would go for more than that, and bale probably 3 times that.

Given we need about 6 new first team players, signing an expensive youth prospect is a bit underwhelming.

Depends though, Henry has said that they will invest in the future but also short term. Which makes this a very good signing.

I don't for a second believe that they won't sign players that can go straight into the first team aswell. Just because they aren't making any noise in the media doesn't mean that nothing is happening.

This kid would probably have done a better job than Jova last night, and whose to say he can't make an impact.

I'll be very surprised if they do. With our wage budget reportedly through the roof, I think we'll be getting some youngsters and that's about it.

It might all work out in the long-term, but it's the here and now we've got to worry about.

If thats it, then short term we're in the shits. And thinking long term from the Championship isn't easy.
