She's dead

Is the funeral going to be treated like a match by the way?

Is @Rosco going to lock this (technically the pre-funeral thread) then have a thread during the funeral (official funeral thread) and then lock that and open a shit post funeral thread (post-funeral analysis thread)?

No.

I'll lock it in two years time when Macca/Binny bumps it with a story about some guy who makes a living by making roofs out of straw.

Just wanted to put a picture of a horse's arse in the OFFICIAL MAGGIE THATCHER FUNERAL THREAD

Oh I see - Churchill was on the side of the Nazis!

I am learning a lot from this thread. 🙂

Portly - Churchill was not on the side of the Nazis, but while he was fully capable of allowing the RAF to pulverize Dresden, he and every single Ally leader refused to bomb the trains lines to Auschwitz or even touch the camps ... They knew about everything that was happening, and they didn't do anything about it. Many of the 'good guys' - be it leaders or corporations - become filthy rich during this war supplying Hitler's allies with goods that went straight to Nazi Germany... It's the harsh reality.

Typical fucking Tory mate.

The reason Bomber Command resorted to "carpet bombing" which resulted in the flattening of Dresden, was that they had given up trying to hit specific targets like railway lines. It just wasn't working with the technology available at the time. There was no way the Allies could do anything about the concentration camps, which were in the heart of enemy territory.

Oddly enough, enough people who flew missions across Europe - be it Americans, Brits or even Russians - have said the exact opposite. As for Dresden - it wasn't about 'specific targets,' it was about causing as much havoc as possible. I read a few books & articles about the bombing as part of a high school paper after reading Vonnegut's Slaughterhouse Five ... Enough pilots were then and today were totally unsure what the point of the mission was, and felt it was about revenge more than anything else.

I think the slaughter in Dresden, and the appalling losses among the bomber crews, is a terrible blot on our escutcheon. Arthur Harris sounds like he was borderline unhinged from what I've read of it.
