I'm interested to hear views on this. Macca, Peter Hague? Does Sinclair have a shot? Strikers have not been too forthcoming recently from our youth system. My impression is that Sinclair has not developed at a rate to suggest he will succeed for us......but I'm not ready to write him off either.

He was a player who, second only to Raheem, was supposedly considered by the youth coaches be destined for great things. I haven't seen enough of him since the bastards turned LFC TV off, but he had a period where he stagnated whilst other players (Ibe particularly), were clearly stepping up performances to a level suggesting they had outgrown the academy. Hopefully he can push on again.

I think we may see him the second half of next season. If he features a lot in preseason then we can be hopeful for him.

Two things happened. One was Ibe arrived, and Sinclair was asked to help him by playing a supporting role, using his tactical nous to make plenty of unselfish runs to create space for Ibe to exploit. He did this very well, but a consequence was he tended to be overlooked in the reports in favour of Ibe. Then he got injured. So in terms of publicity the two things contributed to a diminution of publicity that maybe made some start to wonder if he had stagnated. But he came back from injury well, and Ibe's absence allowed him to resume a more direct and a little more selfish role. So I like him a lot. He's not yet threatening to break the door down and burst into the first team, but he's certainly capable of coming on from the bench and making an impact. Fast, clever and getting better at finishing chances, he's a really good prospect.

For me he looked much more impressive when he was 15 or 16. Somehow as he's grown and filled out he's become a bit cumbersome looking, and quite clumsy on the ball. He's intelligent off the ball, though, and obviously a good finisher.

Realistically though I think I'd have to say that you have to be really outstanding at this level at his age to stand a chance of making it, and he just isn't.

I have to agree with this. He looked effortlessly so much better than everyone else around him when he first arrived. I almost felt sorry for defenders playing against him.

Sinclair's probably one of those young players who'll have to grab any opportunity ruthlessly. There are those like Sterling, Ibe, Rossiter, and Ojo, who are so precocious the club will go out of its way to give chances to. I think Sinclair's a level below that, similar to guys like Flanagan and Robinson, good players who to a large extent are dependent on a chance opening up through injuries and the like.

This can be a very typical phase for young players and they often grow out of it. Their body changes rapidly and throws off their agility and coordination until they adapt. Not fair or accurate to assume that they won't make it if not dominating at the moment.

really helpful comments from the usual posters.

the thing I'm struck about sinclair is that he seems to be the closest striker we have in playing style to Sturridge and as such you would think that he would see more of him - at the most the odd bench role. Maybe a loan is a good call.

Jerome: I love working with Robbie

Jerome Sinclair has explained just how much he feels he has improved as a striker by working alongside club ambassador Robbie Fowler at the Academy.

The 18-year-old, who will spearhead the attack for Neil Critchley's U19s as they face Benfica in the last 16 of the UEFA Youth League in Portugal this afternoon, has already had an impressive campaign.

Liverpool's youngest ever player has fired 21 goals for the Reds' youth teams so far this season, including six in the European tournament, and he has enjoyed regular sessions in Kirkby under the guidance of Fowler and Academy director Alex Inglethorpe.

"Robbie is a legend at this club so to get a few helpful tips from him and some advice is brilliant for me," Sinclair told Liverpoolfc.com.

'It's great working with Robbie'

"This is a guy who has been there and done it and played at the pinnacle of the game. It's fantastic for me to get the chance to work with him and it can only improve my game.

"He has given me a few little tips on my first touch, and worked with me on different types of finishing. He is always there to help me in any way he can."

The young Reds have not played in Europe since December 9, when they reached the last 16 of the UEFA Youth League courtesy of a dramatic final group game with FC Basel.

Needing to win by two clear goals to qualify, Sinclair was among the scorers as Liverpool triumphed 3-0 and secured progress to the knockout stages by netting a pair of goals in stoppage time.

The next task facing Critchley's charges is a tough one as Benfica, runners-up in the competition last season, have home advantage in the 3pm GMT kick-off. *

The tie has to be decided on the day in Portugal and if the scores are level after normal time, the encounter will go straight to penalties to find a winner with no extra-time.

Sinclair said: "It has been a really good experience for us to play in this competition, coming up against different opposition and different cultures.

"We've done well so far and we want to keep going and see how far we can go in it. We know it will be a really tough game against Benfica but we will go there with confidence and hopefully we can come through it."

The talented forward is the joint-second leading goalscorer in the UEFA Youth League with six strikes so far, just one behind Chelsea's Dominic Solanke and Real Madrid's Borja Mayoral.

While he has been happy to have racked up such a tally to date, Sinclair insists his main objective is helping the team rather than looking for personal glory.

"I want to score goals," he added. "I'm a striker and if I'm scoring goals I'm happy, but the team is the most important thing.

"We've had quite a bit of a wait since our win over Basel but everyone is really excited and we can't wait for this game. We know we can beat any opposition on our day. We have beaten Real Madrid this season so we know what we can do."

It's started - good match, 1-1 after nine minutes. Canos scored our equaliser - a great goal, running past three defenders, into the box and then scoring with a perfectly judged diagonal shot into the far corner.

is canos any good?

Yes, very classy, and fast-improving. I also think Fulton is the one young keeper we have who might go on to be a decent senior player - unlike the others, he's vocal, as tough as nails and has a good, strong mentality.

And I actually have more confidence in Fulton as our 3rd choice keeper than Ward. Probably unfair to the latter because I've seen Fulton a fair bit more. However, being sat on the bench week-in week-out mustn't do a young keeper any good. I read an interview a while back with Rodgers saying Ward would need to go on loan at some point in time.

Great reading by Fulton there coming out early to clear the danger. The clearance wasn't that good though but the fact he was out early is a good sign of his decision-making.
