So, Luis to Barca.....

No, I mean acted up this summer in the same way as he did over the possible move to the Arse, only this time stuck to it and made it count. I don't think we'd have seen it through a second time. Of course he got a tidy pay rise for the new deal he signed a year ago, but he'd have got a sod of a lot more still in his back pocket from Barca if he'd forced us to settle for something much more like that £40 mill.

I think that he had the £40m clause, but as mentioned, it only allowed him to "talk" to clubs, it didn't mean we had to accept.

I think we came to a gentleman's agreement with him (then) to grant him a move the following Summer, on the understanding that he signed a new deal with a clause, which guaranteed that we would get a respectable fee.

I think that's about the size of it really, so there is some amount of acknowledgement due to Suarez, but then on the other hand, we bent over backwards for him, so he owed us BIG time.

They've had to pull all of the 2014/15 merchandise promos they did with him, so I doubt they were 100% sure he was going. They still got taken for a bit of a ride, but at least they did protect themselves this time.

It was probably just agreed that should Barca/Madrid come in for him, we'd have to allow him the opportunity, so in that sense it wouldn't have been set in stone. Then obviously there was the Uruguay incident which, from his point of view, more or less forced and speeded up the chance to move. Like I said weeks ago, it's a bit convenient as far as Suarez goes, he had the perfect excuse to put the English press and fans behind him.

Absolutely gutted I'll never see him in Liverpool colours again!
But what a player while he was here. I hope we draw barca in the cl

I'm more upset than I was over Torres, I doubt I'll ever see as good a player play for Liverpool in my lifetime. Now I'm also in the lounge at the airport waiting for the 42 hour flight back to Melbourne after a ridiculously good World Cup so that may be adding to my depression

Norwich fans have just heard the news.

I think we're all forgetting about the Guardiola connection here as well.No doubt the back channels have been humming for a few months.

do you really believe that? He would risk it all for Uruguay, a country he bleeds for? The opportunity to be on the world stage and perform? You can blame him for many things, but I can't see him ever taking the foot off the pedal and not wanting to win, if anything he tries too hard sometimes.

Nah, he's just a pure loon mate.

What way are you flying back to Melbourne????

Are you flying via the moon?

Course I don't, but it gave him the perfect excuse to go and he knew we couldn't back him again, so it worked out well for him, ultimately.

'This time stuck to it' - I love that. It was a really half-arsed effort to activate that clause last year, after all. He probably gave in because he wanted to earn us several more millions or something. He supported us as a kid, after all.

I mean, he loves us. A lot.

So that's that. The best performed footballer in the world over the last 18 months has moved to one of our best European rivals. We got well paid for it - perhaps not maximum but well paid.
Our squad strength and, therefore, capacity to compete in multiple competitions will surely improve. Our capacity to compete at the very highest level will, just as surely, be reduced.
Club harmony and team equality will be better. Desperation to win, chances created and goals scored will be worse.

As others have said, I think I can forget about the goals, the money, the controversy and the hunger to win. What I will miss is that certain knowledge that opposition teams were, without any doubt or debate, acutely uncomfortable at the prospect of facing us. What I will miss will be the audacious, unparalleled moments of creative genius.

The rest is just football in today's modern age. It's all just numbers and economics. But those things I will miss.
