The Italian stallion

Italian Kewell ....i claim credit on that for when he eventually gets injured again and disappoints.

He had a great game. That should really boost his confidence. His best performance for us easily.

Hopefully this one is the legit turning point for him under Slot, who can't continue to watch mixed performances from all of Gakpo, Salah and Wirtz and think Chiesa has nothing to offer. The lad was still busting a gut in the 92nd minute. I don't fully buy that it's always been about fitness but I do think it looks like his body is conditioned to properly contribute.

High praise from Slot indeed..

So I look forward to seeing his name not be included in the match day squad for Palace.
It's the Lex Luthor way.

In other news:

Clubs can admit the temporary replacement of just one outfield player who is ruled out for an extended period of time, with a long-term injury or illness.

The rule is applicable during the league phase until matchday six (9-10 December).

This adaption ensures that squad lists are not unfairly reduced.

This means that Chiesa could replace Leoni in the CL squad. Not sure what constitutes a long-term injury though.

CL Regulations, Article 31.14c::

Long-term injury or illness of an outfield player: during the league phase until matchday 6 included, the club concerned may temporarily replace a maximum of one outfield player and register a new outfield player. The club must complete the official registration of List A with the replacement player, who must have been registered with the club in accordance with Paragraph 30.01 to Paragraph 30.06 before the deadline for List A referred to in Paragraph 31.09(e) (i.e. 2 September 2025 - 24:00 CET).

An injury or illness of an outfield player is considered long-term if it lasts at least 60 days as of the day the injury or illness occurred. If the outfield player recovers before the end of this 60-day period, the player remains nonetheless not eligible to participate in any UEFA club competition (i.e. UEFA Champions League, UEFA Europa League or UEFA Conference League), until the end of such period.

If the replaced outfield player was registered as a club-trained player or an association-trained player, the quotas for club-trained players or association-trained players must be fulfilled with the replacement. The club must provide UEFA with the necessary medical evidence in one of UEFA's official languages. Before confirming the replacement, UEFA may require further medical examination of the outfield player by an expert appointed by UEFA at the club's expense.

Once the injured or ill outfield player is fit to be fielded again, he becomes eligible and/or can resume his position in place of his substitute, who must consequently be removed from the list. The return of the original outfield player must be announced to the UEFA administration at least 24 hours before the next match in which the original outfield player is due to play.

The reverse passes at the 30s and 2-minute mark of the clip were delicious. Especially the former where he sprung the press with a slick pass to Isak. It's looking like a signature pass move -- control and take the ball in an innocuous-looking lateral move, then swivel sharply and serve a snap pass to switch momentum and start a fast attack.

Very Litmanen like.

Three points of note here :

The speed of his turn to cutback to Isak gave him an extra ½ second - the defender could have been on him without it.
Very smart finish even if offside.
Ekitike's missed header denied Cheesy a hat-trick of Assists.

Oh and did anyone notice that Jones already had his arms raised celebrating just before the keeper saved Isak's shot?

He really has fantastic technique and balance. We forget that post Euros, he was one of the most sought after players in Europe - people were comparing him to Hazard.

Pity that he has a body built like Kewell or Sturridge - really should have been one of the standout players of this decade.

All that said, if he continues to play like this, I'd consider starting him over Gakpo on the left, who's been pretty underwhelming.

He's arguably the smartest player we have in the squad and his ball striking accuracy (with either foot) is a massive bonus.

Think he'll defo play at least 30 on Saturday given Hugo's suspension and Isak not having more than 60mins in his legs/body yet.

Regardless of how the rest of his time at Liverpool plays out, his attitude has been elite since he got here. He was genuinely world class a few years back, and if he's not able to get anywhere near that again, it wont be for lack of trying.

He was all over the pitch yesterday too, so the idea of him being lightweight and afraid of getting stuck in has hopefully been put to bed. I'd be tempted to play him through the middle, where he can drop into that false 9 position when needed. Bring Isak into the mix later on. Chiesa just played the full game so I don't think Slot will then play him for more than 60 on Saturday anyway. We'll just have to mange the minutes between the two of them. I'd be worried about starting Salah and Wirtz as well though.

It’s gonna take a lot more than one good game against a lower league club (who fielded their 2nd eleven!) that Chiesa is anything more than a dud.

How about a goal in Carabao cup final, taken like a stud?
Or the match winning goal in the first game of the season
Or the other matches where he's looked lively, and talented.
Or showing up with a brilliant attitude last night, having been dropped from the CL Squad. And winning the game.

It's not just last night. We're going to have to admit sooner or later, that we have a gem here, who can deliver, if whatever mystery reason that kept him in the basement for the last year, is in the rear view.

He seems unanimously well liked, but I definitely get the vibe that he was put on Slot and that Slot didn't have the patience to persevere with him getting fit. We know that by the small squad that Slot uses and how much he doesn't rotate his favourites. Let's just hope his hand has been forced with this one, because everyone loves Chiesa. The players, the fans...
