The new number 9…

I liked what I saw of him. But Portuguese league tax init
Thats with anyone you sign from a foreign league. He is a massive target man and unlike Woltamade this guy can head the ball and is slightly faster than both Ekitike and Woltamadeh
We create a shit lot of chances with a clinical #9 we win these games clear.

Their interest in Gyokeres was being mentioned much earlier and much more consistently than any interest they might have in Sesko, so it's surprised me how many on here have been referring to a Arse/Sesko link. My own view is that Sesko's the real McCoy and a better bet than Gyokeres to be a hit in the Prem.

All I know is I think sesko would suit us nicely

Players from the Portuguese league have done well in PL overall. The good news is we don't get any say on the decision. I think we need to knwo the status of FWD line before we make a move for a striker and we will know more in 3 weeks. We do know Slot likes to play with a big man upfront. PL experience there are two players that fit the bill
Contrary to popular opinion we don't go free agents for the 1st team, so Jonathan Davids is not seen as an option imho

That's Delap, imo. Won't be 10 million but will be affordable and a reasonable punt on talent.

I was thinking someone more out of the box than Delap. I know Origi did not work out in the sense of not being a regular PL starter. He more than delivered in other ways. But when he played you could see why we took a punt on him. He was no Firmino but he fit into our system in other ways. When he was in the zone, Origi could also dance with the ball in tight spaces. Not sure Delap has the skills in his boots to do that.

We have taken punts of the order of 10 million in the past. I am wondering if we will do that again.

Alvarez would be the best fit apart from Isak. Etikite the biggest risk. Could see Sesko being the one we go for as I think he could explode in a better side, but he’s a risk as well. I saw Goncalo Ramos mentioned in an article and I think he’s a good shout. We’ll definitely be looking at more than just the few who have mentioned in the papers. And I wouldn’t be surprised if we wait, if we can’t get who we want.

I'm just chucking out ideas here because I don't really have a strong preference for any of the options, but PSG are the best attacking team in Europe (well, probably) and they repurposed a not particularly prolific winger as their centre forward, and it's gone spectacularly well.

Are there any suitable candidates for similar treatment? What about Semenyo? I like him as a player but he does kind of have the physical attributes of a striker more than a winger. Two good feet. I haven't watched him enough to know how he'd handle the subtler parts of the role, but I wouldn't be against trying someone like that.
I think Mbeumo fits that concept and could work well.

Alvarez should be our main priority hopefully with Darwin going the other way. Delap would be my option #2 for his age & price. The remaining i.e. Sesko, Ekitike or Gyokeres are very high risk due to cost & not being a guaranteed success.

Beyond these two, what does everyone think of Wissa (28) or Mateta (27) who both have one year on their contracts. There is also Evanilson (25) at Bournemouth who I have a sneaky feeling will do well next season & beyond.
I like Wissa quite a lot. Good finisher and works hard.

I always thought Div was getting his shit together and then he got done by that Argentinian CB playing for Everton. Total no-mark, don't even remember his name. That did for him, as surely as he did for Barca.
I think when you look at that tweet showing Everton are offering Delap shitloads of cash, Man U are offering to build their attack around him, Chelsea offering Champions League. We'd be offering what? 10 minutes off the bench and the odd start? I don't see how we'd even be in the conversation from his perspective, unless he's a massive fan or has Niclas Bendtner levels of self-belief.

Not to disagree but every new signing's a risk. Sesko would be no more so than the alternatives and probably less than some, IMO of course.

Yes, Divock was really motoring until the derby game when that animal Funes Mori crocked him. He was grandstanding about it as he got sent off and even their coaching staff lost their rag with him for it. Mind you, Div got a bit of revenge when Prickford flapped the ball on to his head. :vamp:

I agree with you on Div. Regarding Delap, the fact that we are not in the mix tells us that we don’t think he fits the profile in terms of the style of striker we want. If we felt he had the potential, we would have been moving fast. We could have offered the chance to be the spear of an attack with Salah, Wirtz, Diaz supplying him with chances. We could have matched the wages being offered elsewhere. He would have been mad to turn us down.

So we will either spend money or wait for the right striker to be available. Maybe someone like Alvarez?

Or take a chance on the next Divock Origi at 10 million and odd and see how he fits.

Div always seemed to up his level against them after that, and I loved him for it. But that injury was a Sliding Doors moment, and I really wish it had gone the other way and he'd fulfilled his potential.

The next 2 seasons are going to be very important. Mo, Virg, possibly Ali and Konate, they are not going to be around forever. Delap is too much of a risk, we don't have time to wait for him. He looks good because he gets loads of space to run playing for Ipswich.

For us, surely a number 9 who works hard and works well in tight spaces / areas will be the priority after getting burnt by Nunez.

Strikers I don't want
Alvarez - not worth £130m that would take to get him

Strikers I am open to
Ekitike
Waltomade
Pedro
Gyokeres
Omorodion
Burkardt
Biereth

IF this is true (and most of what you read in the press isn't) then there are a few things to say.
Firstly, signing-on fees are rare these days. He won't be getting £10m up-front. A signing on fee is usually paid at the start of each season of the contract. The main reason why clubs avoid them is that they are due whatever happens. So if the lad turns out to be shit and they sell him this time next year, they still have to pay the full £10m. This is often a tension with foreign players moving to the UK because they expect to be given a big, one-off lump sum, and FA rules don't allow that.
So it's mostly likely that the signing-on fee is a request from his camp, not an offer from Arsenal.
But if it is an offer from Arsenal, then they're basically gaming things so that they can argue his basic is the £112k, not £150k (which is the total guaranteed salary across each year, divided by 52). This may mean someone in the squad has a clause entitling them to parity with the top-paid player, and this is a way of avoiding triggering that clause. Which that player will obviously be totally cool with, and there will be no problems whatsoever. Nope. All good.

Why what happens next year?

I think we should go for him if we can afford the buyout clause of £125m. Yes it's way more than he's worth but I'd just suck that up.

Can we possibly afford it though? That's the question. We'd need to find at least £150m in sales, you'd have thought.

Kelleher 30
Elliott 40
Nunez 50
Doak 25

Maybe it's just about doable.

Couldn’t agree more - if we can get him, I’d be happy for us to spend more, because he’s the one who’s quality isn’t in doubt, is premier league proven and doesn’t have any lingering fitness concerns.

I just think Atletico won’t sell him this year for various reasons - lower profit on book price, ability to get a bidding war going if Barca are, as expected, very interested in signing him next year, plus transfer windows directly after a World Cup tend to be Inflated.

Spanish release clauses tend to be ridiculously high.

Depends whether Alvarez agitated for a move - there’s no sign of that or a desire/need to move him on.

That that brings us back to what we’ve done numerous times over the years - so we hold off signing someone else in the interim because we won’t be able to spend £50-£80m now and then another £100m+ on a forward next summer.

I’m really interested to see whether any links start to firm up from the really good sources - Ornstein, etc.

It’s obviously early days yet, but we’ve moved quickly so far and nothing really above the usually clickbait links - which does feel like we’ll bide our time and only go after someone if an unmissable opportunity comes up.

I'm pretty sure his release clause is €150m.

You might be right there - no-one knows for sure, but €150m or in excess of €150m seems to be the popular numbers.

That’s about £125m and would take our spending to over £300m. It’s doable if

Maybe we can’t trigger a deal below the release clause by chucking in someone like Darwin at a “reasonable price” - you know, like we’ll give you Darwin +£50m while pretending we value Darwin at £85m like Stuggart value Ekitike.

Again, if the numbers guys can make the figures work and Alvarez is happy to move…. I’d be absolutely delighted.

I think we're getting the easy deals done so we can focus on the trickier ones (like a striker) unfettered

Feels like this applies to Diaz being played at CF and maybe that is an experiment that will continue

I hope so.

You know what’s happened in previous seasons when people have convinced themselves of things like that.

Begins with a dis and ends in an appointment!!

I reckon there's a good deal to be done there.
With Eintracht and with Chelsea sniffing around? It’ll be tough…but there’s a good chance the player might make a fuss about playing in our set up with Wirtz / Salah / Diaz supplying bullets

Exactly.

We've got legends of the game currently playing for us. We've been free scoring, all we need is that number 9. Hugo, that could be you
