Clubs are allowed to register 25 players for the upcoming season in the Premier League as well as "List A" in the Champions League. So far, we have bought 7 (not counting Origi):

Lambert, Can, Lallana, Markovic, Lovren, Manquillo, and Moreno.

We are definitely still in the market for 1 or even 2 strikers/attacking players. And if Lucas goes, we could still buy someone like Song as a replacement. Oh, and the back-up goalkeeper is a strong possibility. So that's potentially 3-4 players in addition to the 7 we have already signed. And we'll have some players returning from loans and probably some youngsters promoted into the 25-man squad. When the dust is settled, literally half of last year's 2nd place-winning squad will be replaced in one summer. Is it too much?

Our core is still in tact (and isn't just one player), so no. Spurs failed because they lost that core, and they didn't have any real leaders in the club, it was a mess. Thankfully for us we have a strong core, and two massive leaders in Rodgers and Gerrard, they'll keep the club going in the right direction, and stop the squad falling into a mess. Basically, we'll be fine.

We NEED a STRIKER and maybe another winger although there is enough versatility amongst the creative players to fill any gaps. Ibe will emerge.

According to this http://www1.skysports.com/football/teams/liverpool/squad , with the youngsters in the squad and Moreno we have 43 players, and we can register 25? Not sure what the crack is with having to register youth players or not, and whether we can have 25 senior and unlimited under 18's?
We'll surely lose around 5 before the end of the window to loans and a few sales. I can only see one more coming in now, some sort of forward/striker.

Unlimited u21s

In that case I think we've got 24 currently over 21yrs inc Moreno, but some of those are obviously linked to go.

You have to imagine there will be at least one more exit before the end of the window. Is it Sept 1st that the 25 man squad has to be finalised?

Our entire core is still here. Every member of the 14man team apart from Suarez has gone and we've replaced that with 7 quality additions

Not like we'll be using an entirely new team overstocked in one position... well, apart from CB at the mo

The numbers are misleading. Devil is in the details.

Who we've lost:
- Reina, Coates, Kelly, Alberto, Aspas, Cissokho, Moses: : they either didn't play, or didn't play much; and for some - when they played, we wished they hadn't.
- Suarez: we'd have lost him for a chunk of the season anyway if he hadn't gone; ban has been upheld.

Who we might lose:
- Borini, Ilori: see above
- Agger, Toure, Lucas: these three guys played more minutes so are the only ones "swapped out" so to speak if they do move, although it has to be said that their roles were decreased as well as the season wore on.

So we've, in general, swapped deadwood for improved options (hopefully). Obviously a few cases are major changes, but we've done nothing but apparently improve all over the place (except up front). Yes, there's always going to be an integration challenge, but sticking with the guys we sent out presents little upside. Most of them were never going to play too big a role this season anyway.

FSG should really push the boat out and make a statement i reckon and i think they will back Rodgers with a big buy striker...

It doesnt add up to me at the minute, last summer we chased Costa for ages, 3 strikers is a minimum really and since then we've lost Suarez... surely they will know its essential...

I think we are all gonna be delighted before the end of the window i really do... ive gotta sneaky feeling...

The following is based on my understanding of both competitions' registration requirements. I've simplified some parts as they're rather wordy, so some details might be lost in translation:

League
For the 2014/2015 EPL registrations, anyone born on or after 1 Jan 1993 is eligible to go into the U21 list. That means Flanagan goes into that list since he was born on 1 Jan 1993. So at this point in time, we've got zero problems with the 25-man squad. We also don't need to pull some U-21s into the 25-man squad to make up the home-grown player quota.

25-man squad:
GK - Mignolet, Jones (HG)
FB - Johnson (HG), Enrique, Moreno
CB - Lovren, Skrtel, Sakho, Toure, Coates
CM - Gerrard (HG), Henderson (HG), Lucas, Allen (HG), Coutinho, Lallana (HG)
CF - Sturridge (HG), Lambert (HG), Borini (HG)

U21s: Sterling, Flanagan, Manquillo, Markovic, Can, Suso, Teixeira, Ibe, Ilori, etc.

CL
The CL requirements are stricter though, with the senior squad subject to further limitations. At least 8 of the 25 names must be locally-trained, with at least 4 of these being club-trained. A club-trained player needs to be someone who spent 3 years on the club's books after age 15, so Lambert doesn't count. The U21 list is also stricter, in that players have to have spent at least 2 years at the club after age 15 to be in that list, so guys like Can, Markovic, Manquillo, etc. don't count. So, our CL 25-man squad will have some of our league U-21 names in it. Could look like this:

List A:
GK - Mignolet, Jones (AT)
FB - Johnson (AT), Enrique, Flanagan (CT), Moreno, Manquillo
CB - Lovren, Skrtel, Sakho, Toure, Coates, Ilori
CM - Gerrard (CT), Henderson (AT), Lucas, Allen (AT), Coutinho, Lallana (AT), Can
AM - Sterling (CT), Markovic, Suso (CT)
CF - Sturridge (AT), Lambert (AT), Borini (AT).

List B: Ward, Teixeira, Ibe, etc.

As you can see, there are now 27 names in List A. We need to keep at least 4 club-trained + 4 association-trained names in there, so at least two names (and not club-trained ones) will get dropped. Probably two of the seven centrebacks. We're safe on the locally-trained numbers, though it'd have been great if we'd been able to keep Flanagan, Sterling and Suso in List B but we can't because we don't have other over-21 club-trained guys in the squad now.

Apologies if I've misinterpreted some of the rules and misled anyone. 😉

You've got Skrtel in there twice - so only 26. Ilori & Coates will almost certainly leave on loan (so 24), Lucas could leave and Song come in (still 24) add (for example) Lavezzi (now that's 25). Romero could come in and Jones leave (still 25). Borini will go to Sunderland. So with Song, Lavezzi, Romero and A.N.Other coming in (that's too many but you get the point) we'd still only have 25. No worries !

It's list B that might be confusing, e.g. has Ward, Ibe and Teixeira spent at least 2 years at our club after the reached 15?

I also think Sterling and maybe Suso can be counted in list B.

Effectively we might only have Gerrard and Flanagan as our CT players. Kelly didnt have to leave as he was guaranteed a spot in the CL squad as part of the CT group; so I didnt expect him to leave. Overall though, I dont expect players coming in to form the CT group so we have to play around with the 17 'other' spots.

We currently have 19 'other' players (including Agger who's not in the original list) and out of those, like Frogfish has said, Agger, Coates, Iliori and Borini should be leaving. That only leaves us with 2 slots to fill who should be the other striker and maybe Romero. Lucas will have to go if Song does come in.

Ibe has been with the club since end December 2011/January 2012, while Teixeira and Ward joined us in January 2012, so I think all should qualify for List B, unless the cutoff for the 2-year requirement is 1st January of the competition year. As there's no cutoff date stated in the rules, I don't think there's a problem here with them being in List B.

Yes, Sterling and Suso can be in List B, and even Flanagan can fit there (born 1 January 1993). As you've suggested, it's even possible we could just leave 22 players in List A, comprising: 17 players (any status) + 4 players declared as AT + 1 player declared as CT (Gerrard) instead. Anyway, some departures here and there will clear up spots in the 17, or we could just drop guys (heck, we dropped Hyypia for Degen once... argh).

In a few seasons' time, we may well have CTs flowing out of our arse in the List A. 😀
