Liverpool hold out for Real to increase bid for Alvaro Arbeloa• Defender proud to be linked with Bernabéu

• Renewed offer for Xabi Alonso expected

Andy Hunter guardian.co.uk, Wednesday 24 June 2009 22.10 BST Article history

Liverpool have rejected a ¤5m (£4.23m) bid from Real Madrid for Alvaro Arbeloa, but will allow the defender to return to the Bernabéu providing they recoup £5m for the Spain international.

Real, who have also lined up a ¤30m offer for Xabi Alonso, made their first official move for the Liverpool right-back following talks with the player's agent, Manuel García Quillón. The bid was instantly rejected by Rafael Benítez, who is also represented by Quillón, but Liverpool are likely to settle for a marginal increase with Arbeloa approaching the final 12 months of his Anfield contract.

The 26-year-old has also made no secret of his desire to sign for Real, where he failed to make an impact on the first team before leaving for Deportivo La Coruña in 2006. "I am especially proud of what the club is doing," Arbeloa reiterated . "It is a big project with the return of Florentino [Pérez, as president] and obviously if Madrid is fixed on you it makes you proud."

Arbeloa has proven an astute purchase since joining Liverpool for £2.6m in January 2007 but will be usurped as the club's first-choice right-back by Glen Johnson. Benítez is looking to offset the £17m cost of the England international, who has passed a medical at Liverpool and will sign a four-year contract on his return from holiday, by selling the likes of Arbeloa and Andrea Dossena, while Portsmouth will write off the £7m they owe for Peter Crouch as part of the Johnson deal.

The Spain defender is currently in South Africa for the Confederations Cup and admits his future will be resolved after the tournamentends on Sunday. Arbeloa added: "I would be lying if I said I was sure to start the season with Liverpool. I'll be able to think about all this by next Monday."

Real's interest in Alonso is also expected to gather pace following the Confederations Cup with the midfielder noncommittal on his future while the competition is in progress. Unlike Javier Mascherano, who Benítez has declared is not for sale at any price amid interest from Barcelona, Liverpool may be receptive to a substantial offer for a player who endured a strained relationship with the manager last season.

Barcelona's pursuit of Mascherano was today encouraged by Lionel Messi, the Argentina captain's compatriot and friend, who admits the midfielder would be a valuable addition to thereigning European champions. "Of course I would like him to join, who would not want to play with great players like Javier," said Messi. "I hope he can come here."

Liverpool have received an offer from Málaga for their unwanted goalkeeper, Charles Itandje. The Frenchman still has two years remaining on a lucrativeAnfield contract, but did not feature in Benitez's plans last season and was fined two weeks' wages for behaving offensively during the Hillsborough memorial service.

Two things:

1 - This looks pretty ominous. I'd be massively surprised if Arby was still a Liverpool player by the start of the season, so we should get what we can for him.

2 - I think that funny symbol's supposed to be the Euro sign.

I'll be sad to see him go.

One of our better signing based on price and what he brought to the team.

Lets hope Johnson doesn't get injured.

True.

I liked Arbeloa. A better player than many on this site gave him credit for.

It's also ridiculous that we're even considering selling him for 5 million whilst getting JOhnson for 18 million; I don't see him as that much better.

Johnson's two years younger.
Johnson is English.
Arbeloa has only 1 year left on his contract.

All contributory factors.

I hope Madrid tells us to do one and we're "forced" to keep him.

I still think he would get his share of starts with Aurelio's injury history and Insua's inexperience.

£5m for Arbeloa isn't a lot even when you take into account he only has 1 year left on his contract. I think he's a very useful, versatile player but if he wants to leave and return to Spain then there's not much point standing in his way.

Losing Alonso will be a big blow and I'm struggling to think of viable, available options to replace him.

I just read on the Beeb site that Birmingham are giving Cardiff 5M for Roger Johnson. I'm now not happy with 5M from Real Mardid for Arbeloa.

Fuck, when I heard 10 million getting bandied about I said I'd believe it when I saw it. Maybe we'd pay 10 million for him, and it'd somehow make a point about how serious we are, but it sadly rings true that we are talking about half that. I'd be quite happy to get 8.

Is it because Carra nearly socked it to him during the match?
definately.

What Carra biffed, they dissapear....

Exactly, this is the kind of rubbish transfer we used to crucify Parry for.
True.

I agree we got 10 million for Crouch despite him havin a year left as well.
So I think we should ask for about £7-8 Million.
Remember how Real screwed us over with Owen?

Crazy how the market has moved on since we lost Owen. If we're getting 5-8M for Arbeloa with one year left now, how much could we demand for Owen... 15M at least surely.

Shame we let Arbeloa's contract run down. I thought that wasn't supposed to happen anymore?

As for replacing Xabi... I don't think it can be done really. Please don't sell him Rafa.

Yeah the contract situation is daft, was he one of the one's 'told' not to sign until Rafa had sorted out his own future?

Anyway, regardless I still think he's one of the best right backs in the league and he was a steal for the price, if he goes we're back down to one right back pretty much, we can't really rely on Carra playing there because we're down to three in the middle.

well, let's hope we've learnt our lessons and anyone who lets their contract dip close to or below two years is offered a contract with the ultimatum of signing or being sold...

...wait

HA HA HA HA HA HA HA HA HA HA HA HA HA HA HA HA

I crack me up sometimes

The fee is influenced by the fact Arbeloa has made it clear to Rafa & the club he's homesick & wants to return to Spain, the Spanish clubs are well aware of this.

That's partly true, but I think the main reason is because he knows his position here is untenable after Carra-gate.

In fact, I'd wager that the 'homesick' story is a tad exaggerated.

That's likely why he wasn't offered another contract also.

Although we probably should of sold him last year and recouped a bigger fee and bought Johnson when he was a "£7-10M player. Hindsight's wonderful.

The "home sick story" is years old and is no way connected to 'Carra-gate'

And it can't be suggest his position certainly isn't "untenable" after that incident because nobody knows what happened in the aftermath. It wasn't *that* bigger deal, and I certainly don't think it's why he's leaving.

Are you suggesting that his possible departure is not linked to either the Carragher incident or being homesick?

I was being speculative, but alternative reasons are a little thin,Squiggs.

No, I do think he's missing some Spanish sun and lifestyle, and has done for a while. And we've just signed a £17M fullback - who will play regardless of form to justify his fee (like Berbz at United), leaving Arbeloa with no room in the team.

Plus he's got the 'greatest team in the world' coming in for him, who've signed some of the worlds best players.

They're reasons enough without bringing 'Carra-gate' into it, because like I said, I don't think that's a big deal; especially when you consider the above factors.

Perhaps not, but I think we're bringing in Johnson because Arbeloa is leaving; rather than a case of Arbeloa leaving because Johnson is coming.

You're right though, that there are lots of possible reasons why Arbeloa would want to leave.

Who knows?

Maybe Arbeloa won't leave after all and we'll have RB set for a while.

After all, RB was NOT a priority 2 months ago; LW and a second striker was a bigger priority.

In fact, as you've suggested yourself; LB was more of a problem than RB with Insua being unproven, Aurelio being made of glass, and Dossena being rubbish.

Keane wasn't played regardless of form to justify his fee, so why would Johnson.

I think it suits both parties to an extent and isn't the case of 'one or the other'.

Rafa clearly wants fullbacks who can contribute more over the half-way line, so maybe Rafa wouldn't seek to improve on Arbeloa anyway. I do think, however, that Johnson was prioritised in terms of timing - and perhaps funding - because of Arbeloa's effectively forced his hand.

'Cos like Ryan says, his departure looks pretty ominous
