Honestly, I'm not fussed ... and this is being said as an Italian citizen who's always being on the Italy bandwagon as the two other countries I support could probably barely survive the Championship! :)

I'm disappointed we have so many bigoted, uncouth gammons on here. I used to think this place was cool.

I don't know if you seen what Southgate has been saying about colonialism and the war recently but here it is. Good old little England. It was eighty fucking years ago.

“For an island our size we’ve got an incredible influence on the world and we’ve got to keep that in a positive way,” he said. “There are historic things that we should be proud of. We’ve had unbelievable inventions in this country.”
Whereas predecessors as England coach would stick to talking about matters on the field, Southgate has often talked about the role of sports in uniting the country since the 2016 Brexit referendum. And he doesn’t shy away from how the nation has been shaped by military conflicts — and the place victory over Nazi Germany in World War II has in the sense of nationhood.
Southgate brought up how much it resonated that England beat the modern-day Germany 2-0 in the round of 16 at Euro 2020.
“People have tried to invade us and we’ve had the courage to hold that back,” Southgate said. “You can’t hide that some of the energy in the stadium against Germany was because of that. I never mentioned that to the players, but I know that’s part of what that story was.”

I'm Irish and supporting Southgate's views here.

Based on that I say Forza Italia.

800 fucking years we've been trying to get you lot out Gareth.

Every country is full of cunts.

This country just has a lot more.

Come on, Italy!

I think it's time you travel the world young padawan and confirm this ... just stay the hell away from that island with cannibals please. They're proper cunts! ;-)

Will Germans and the French support Italy over England? I’m not so sure. There is more hatred and rivalry there and for Germans there is also a consideration of Italy getting closer to them in trophy count (whereas England is far behind, at least for now).

Most other counties will probably go to Italy on balance, although there are England sympathizers everywhere.

The vote is actually closer than I imagined it would be. But then that is typical of any discussion, those with negative opinions always shout the loudest. Some of the comments however sound more like City/United fans talking about Liverpool ... anyone but them !

On a purely personal level I can understand not wanting England to win because the loathsome media, and despicable neanderthals, will have a field day but my father is 90 and an ardent supporter so with years running out I want to see him enjoy a victory. I'll watch the match but am ambivalent, if we score I'll jump up and take pleasure in it but the feeling will be gone the moment it's all over.

As for the other 30 odd million Brits that will be tuning in to watch, why deny them a moment of happiness, to lighten the despair and for many, the loss, they've experienced over the past 18 months, purely for your own couple of minutes of schadenfreude (not that I don't enjoy that immensely but it's usually reserved for a club or a player).

N.B. 1
On. a side note why do the TV cameras always linger on the bloody uncouth beer-bellied scumbags bouncing around bare topped? Not just passing over them but screening 5 seconds of nauseating images. Surely families, couples and just 'normal' people are far more appetising than giving them twats the screen time they yearn for?

N.B. 2
I can understand Scots, Welsh and Irish not wanting an England victory, why would you !

Agreed.

It's like England is going to beat us to the AFCON!!

I'm not really rooting for Italy as opposed to just not wanting England to win. I'm from England and I used to support them - have fond memories of watching the 86, 90 and 98 world cups in particular, and Euro 96. There were always Liverpool players reasonably prominent in the team, which helped. Gradually though, as Football became more commercialised, hype became more of an intrinsic part of the game, I ended up disliking more of the non-Liverpool players in the team. At the same time, especially as I started watching more games in pubs and with the advent of forums, the views of other England fans became more of an issue. I've always felt that Liverpool players have got a raw deal within the England squad; Barnes was the first one I was really aware of being treated that way, but it's gone all the way through to the present day.

Anyway; I remember watching England vs Denmark in the 2002 world cup in a pub. Two things made me decide then and there I couldn't support England anymore; firstly the animosity towards Denmark - just because they were the opposition, they were automatically the enemy, to be jeered at and cheered when they got injured - and secondly the abuse Heskey got. Heskey was never a favourite of mine, I got annoyed often enough when I perceived he wasn't trying hard enough, but he was getting abuse from England 'fans' just for not being good enough. I never got that. Get frustrated, sure. But it's not as if he picked himself. Anyway, Heskey scored and I got really angry at how all the fans celebrated with no sense of irony at all.

It would be nice to follow England again, but I hate the hype in the media, hate all the WW2 references, hate the hypocrisy, hate the xenophobia and nationalism in a significant proportion of the fanbase, hate the way Liverpool players are undervalued by a lot of the fans. So as much as it would be nice to support England, it just sits too uncomfortably with me.

That's not to say it would be different if I was from any other country. Maybe the press there discuss the national team in the same way. Maybe the fans are as big a set of cunts. But I don't live in another country. So there we are.

As a German I would argue that most people are happy that we get a new coach after years of “sadness” (of the development and what would have been possible) and everything else is not to important.

but to sour point: A lot of people I know are impressed by the way Italy played as a collective and how the fought for each other (and wish the same for Germany) - that is why they cheer for Italy.
On the other hand, Southgate words were not making to many people happy here as you can imagine (even if most people do not care - and without going into detail Germany has because of its past a complete different view on patriotism).

To be honest I do not care to much who wins (I really do not care how many titles Italy have) but from a football perspective I think Italy deserves it as the best team of the Euro (while It would be a great story for England to bring it home in Wembley).

Well, its not difficult to root against Southgate:

Southgate: “People have tried to invade us and we’ve had the courage to hold that back. You can’t hide that some of the energy in the stadium against Germany was because of that.”

if he is so into history, he should do a follow up with who the english have invaded and colonised

then follow up with a commentary on the ethnic origins of most of his squad and become properly unstuck

what a dickhead

If you put my political views, my preferred news sources, and all my data, put it all into a machine learning algorithm, let it compute all the statistics and correlations, it would conclude with 99.95% certainty that I support England, and that would be its undoing.

England, and I don't care who knows it. For one thing, no way am I going to support that other bunch - cynical cloggers who have betrayed their own skills down through the decades. For another, I have a a number of Italy fans among my (extensive) Maltese fam who will not let me hear the end of it if they nick the trophy.

This kinda sums it up for me.
I used to love watching England.. but then it was that I used to just love football.

It slowly started to change at the Euros in Portugal 2006, not the game but the sheer stupidity and abuse from the England fans.
Feared assault a couple of times.. once when they were singing the German bomber song, I'd not seen or heard before...and it got aggressive quickly.
The day after England lost, tried to have a conversation with a few English on the train about the game..us being brown they were confused about why we were talking about England in the way we were and got a bit aggressive.. before the older amongst them told the younger ones to calm down.

Less so but similar when I watched England in Wembley a few years ago.

Actually now I think about it a good few examples but I suppose they don't define the game or the country.

I'm seeing plenty of younger people who don't have those kinda affinities to the football who'd like England to win.. so I hope they do.
I won't lose any sleep if they lose though.

And there will always be horrible ppl in any walk of life.. maybe the average England supporter is more of a twat than not but still
