Wingers

If we actually manage to sign a striker on a loan deal, re Gomez. Then I would love us to spend some money on a winger.

A cheeky bid for N'Zogbia would do.

Of course it would do. The more important point is, will it happen? I have supported this club for 12 years and I haven't seen a proper winger play for us yet. Sight for sore eyes at Anfield surely.

Every fucking club who wins something these days has one. Will I ever seen one play for us? And I mean, ever?

Yes I was thinking this watching United (Nani, Giggs) and Arsenal (Walcott) at the weekend.

We're about the same defensively as these lot. If we are all playing one up front we are as good as them. Even in the centre of the park with Stevie, Poulsen and Cole we'd be alright holding our own.. but out wide we are sorely lacking in genuine quality.

Kuyt or Jova might end up scoring more goals than our rivals' wingers, but they just don't offer us the basics of a winger. The width, touch, creativity, skill, pace (Jova has enough admittedly) and balance that one would hope for. And I really think it hold us back as a team going forward.

The ability to beat a man and get in behind a defence is so basic but so fundamental to United and all the top teams. It's a weapon of attack that we simply don't possess right now and one I hope Roy addresses soon. It'd make games like yesterday a whole lot easier and create space for players like Torres and Gerrard in the middle.

Right now, no one needs to double up on Kuyt or Jova, but they damn sure are all over Nando and Stevie whenever in possession. You add Giggs (even at his age, he glides past full backs) and Valencia to our team and I think we'd be competing for the title, easily.

I was so excited when we signed him. He did have a good first season, 10 goals, I think. But he was never at his rampaging best like he was at Leeds. And of course, what happened after that first season, we all know.

What exactly is a cheeky bid? Perhaps being mildly insulting whilst offering a sum of money for another team's player?

"This is a formal offer for your left winger of five million pounds to be paid in full subject to satisfactory medical.

By the way, your bird looks like a robber's dog"

I have virtually given up on us EVER buying a decent winger. McManaman apart, over the past 10 to 15yrs in comparison to title winners Man Utd / Arsenal / Chelsea we have been totally inept when it comes to buying wingers.

Robben
Ronaldo
Giggs
Malouda
Overmars
Pires
Duff
Nani
Walcott

4-2-3-1 doesn't need 'wingers' but 'forwards'.. Jova and Maxi are great in this role
Jovanovic is not "great" in that role. He's looking more and more like yet another honest trier with limited ability.

I'd love a proper winger that has pace and can actually go past a man. Maybe we'll get one in the future..

Somebody descibed our wingers as "Agricultural", which makes me picture them playing with a shovel.

being a great winger is obviously about having good pace and skill but it's also about the support given by the fullback and the freedom given by the team. I think a winger will struggle in a team that bogs him down with too much defensive duties and a fullback partner that is reluctant to get forwards and support him.

Adam Johnson, I can't believe we missed out on him.

He could turn out to be City's best signing under Mancini, a snip at £7m.

Neil actually hasn't got a clue when it comes to fullbacks.
I know what I want a fullback and usually what I want in a fullback I see in the fullbacks of other top teams; arsenal, manu and chelsea have better fullbacks than we do, or maybe they are given more freedom to be more effective.

without getting into a big argument, I get the sense that the majority of people in this forum want defenders and fullbacks are that fantastic defenders and aren't asked if they contribute in an attacking sense, and they want fantastic attackers and aren't asked if they contribute in an defensive sense, well, it isn't an ideal world and I've been watching the likes of chelsea and manu dominate the league with teams filled top to bottom with players that are effective at both.

in the same way you wouldn't expect a defender to be entirely effective without protection, I don't expect wingers to be entirely effective without support...

Back on Koptalk, Neil made clear and concise sentences.

Now I cant make sense out of any of them. It doesn't take that much effort.

fair enough, which bit didn't you understand, I'll do my best to explain myself better.
simply put though, I think a fullback should be judged on their ability to get forwards as well as defend.
