Alonso's achievements with Leverkusen are impressive. My only concern is that Leverkusen were known for last-minute winners. I believe they scored 15 goals after 90 minutes in all competitions that year and more than 30 goals after 80 minutes.
That is indeed impressive and can be shown as evidence of a "never say die" spirit. But often those unusually high stats don't recur. We see that, with Slot, a go-for-broke attack after 80 minutes can be neutralized over time by better teams.
