all im saying that if i was picking the team i would be sorely tempted dropping one of Carra, Skrtel and definitely Kuyt against teams I know are going to park the bus. that's just picking players who are suited to the game not snubbing or dissing players

Liverpool boss Benitez: Agger deserves new deal

Liverpool boss Rafa Benitez insists defender Dan Agger is in his plans.

Benitez has revealed he is eager to secure Agger's services for the long-term.

"I was on the flight to Marseille last week and thinking about how we needed to offer him (Agger) a new contract," Benitez said.

Liverpool boss Rafael Benitez has revealed that he has decided to offer a new deal to defender Daniel Agger, even though he was missing from the Anfield squad for major part of last season due to a foot injury.

The 23-year-old Danish International still has 18 months left on his current contract with the Reds and has to compete with Jamie Carragher, Martin Skrtel and Sami Hyppia for a place in central-defence, with Liverpool boss Benitez keen to keep the defender on a long-term basis at the Merseyside club.

"I was on the flight to Marseille last week and thinking about how we needed to offer him (Agger) a new contract," Benitez told the Daily Mirror.

"I've been talking to Daniel and he is ready, focused and really happy here. I'm really pleased with him and have a lot of confidence in him, but he knows Carra and Skrtel are playing well and that maybe he needs to wait because the understanding between them has been good.

"I have said Daniel is one of the best centre-backs we have when he is fit and, if he is, it will be difficult for me.

"He is a very good attacking centre-back when we are playing at Anfield, but he needs games."

Well you could've just picked the piece from the official then ;)

i have to laugh when Benitez says he can't drop Carra and Skrtel because they're playing well yet Babel is also playing well and gets dropped regularly and this happens to a lot of players who have been rotated

That's an entirely fair post, Spacker.

And while you aren't anywhere near bright or eloquent enough to elucidate your entire point to any acceptable degree, I find myself agreeing with those bits I am able to decipher.

On a (hopefully) similar tangent, I wasn't bothered about Masher being missing at home against Stoke, either.

In fair play to Rafa I don't think the central pairing at the back is a position were you should mould to much.

However I do agree that he should've at least played one of Agger or Sami against Stoke, as that was so obviously a game where the main focus wasn't going to be on defending. One of either Agger or Sami would've added more flair on either the overall attacking-play (Agger) or on our set-pieces in general (Sami).

Whether it is correct or not, there is a school of thought which says that you don't chop and change your defence, particularly your central defence, whereas the midfield and attacking formation and personnel can be changed dependent on the opposition strengths and weaknesses.

I'm a big fan of 4231 and would play Gerrard ahead of 2 midfielders everytime with Keane on the bench or playing where Kuyt does, whether that's Alonso and Lucas or Alonso and Masher, notice it worked in Marseille when it allowed Gerrard to push up and be in a position to score that screamer even though the performance was dire the system gets the result and yet when its changed against a much shitter team you find we can't score with the opposite being true and having all the possession in the world

if he was truly following that school of thought he would apply it to Kuyt who is never dropped so it becomes quite illogical.

I never said Benitez's decisions are logical.

Agger scored around five in his last full Season.
Around five? Are you sure? I can remember two Daniel Agger goals for Liverpool - the screamer against West Ham and the free-kick in the CL semi against Chelsea. What other goals has he scored for us?
It's five now alright.

it's not really a coincidence is it when he has that quality and confidence to say 'im taking this free kick' and when he does it has the respect and trust of his team mates, he's done it against Chelsea in a massive game for instance. he has the type of in-game intelligence and quality we need. of course that doesn't make him immune to bad performances or anything but he is a real asset over the course of a season and we play better when he's in the side.

always amuses me how just because Benitez leaves a player out for a while people question his quality and attitude rather than the manager

Rebel, I like Agger. But he isn't the messiah. That's all I was saying earlier in the thread.

Don't forget the dogging.

I want agger back in the first team, I think skrtal is rash in the tackle and agger is far more assured on the ball.

After a season out, Agger must sharpen up his game. He has to earn the right to wear the shirt. Skrtel has been a colosus but is prone to the rash tackle from behind which is going to cost us in a big match. Skrtel is currently the man in possession and Agger has it all to do.

Agree with that, and would add that - for all Agger's composure normally - (a) he's still too easily knocked out of his stride by a physical opponent and (b) his use of the ball is nowhere near good enough. At the moment he's quite a distance behind Skrtel for my money.

No it's not. It's not awful, but his passing can be pretty poor at times.

Completely agree.

I'm not sure if it's just on here that the "Agger - silky skilled centre half" vs "Skrtel - hoofer" line has been drawn, but it does seem to be quite an oversimplification. For all the purposeful striding out of defence with the ball, Agger's distibution can be terrible.
