We have just spent 20M pounds on Stewart Downing.

Might be worth some of you re-reading that sentence above a few times. Just until it sinks in.

It's utterly staggering. What's more perplexing/frustrating/mindnumbing is that we could have speent double that and more, and most of you would still be wheeling out youtube clips/in Kenny we trust/Carroll's head/etc etc as some sort of justitification. It doesn't make you less of a fan to admit that this is an unbelievably exhorbitant fee for a slightly-better-than-average footballer that frankly - not one of you wanted 2 months ago.

Not only did we spend 35M on a striker who didn't really fit into our style of play, we've now added 20-30M odd on top of that on players to try and make him play better. I'd have preferred to spend that 60-70M on players who are going to assist the Gerrard's and Suarez's to be honest.

These are some massive risks we're taking. But hey, roll out the youtubes.
The fee reflects the rarity of the player i.e. English left footed winger and he fact that Villa didn't want to sell. We can afford it so I don't see what the problem is with the fee, which really is the going rate for an English international and Premier league proven midfield player.

At the end of the season we'll see if your right and King Kenny's wrong but with all due respect out of his judgement and yours, I know which one I'd rather back.
Completely shameless bump.

Great thread this btw.

I'm genuinely convinced that Kenny bought Downing cos he was English and he has a left foot.

I can't see any other reasons.

Every time i read "Premiership proven" in this thread i wanted to stab someone repeatedly.

I hope we don't ever repeat that......never.....ever again...

Rosco:

"And there's going to be nobody better than me and Ryan to remind of that down the line."

Ugh, we've reached the bump told you so point of the season.

Get the fuck out of here!
Downing?
Really?

As a squad player, yes.
As a starter, hell no.

I shouldn't be surprised, I knew that Sanchez/Hazard/Young was probably wishful thinking.
Yeah got this one right as well.

I was having a quick look around to see what we had said previously about Downing on this forum and found this thread
http://www.sixcrazyminutes.com/forums/index.php?topic=26295.msg652620#msg652620

St George, Hansern and (Interestingly) Ryan seemed to be his main supporters (to some extent)
http://www.sixcrazyminutes.com/forums/index.php?topic=26295.msg652620#msg652620

That's completely irrelevant to the main reason why I'm posting though, I just wanted to laugh at this statement by mystic Glock
Capel, Quaresma and Luis Suarez are all decent players but would not improve our team and i don't need Wikipedia to tell how stupid you are. Now just be a good little boy and shut the fuck up. OK? Ok.

I like the Ryan quote:

"I rate Downing too. But not at the price Gibson will invariably command."

a winger 'type' is exactly what we needed, someone direct with the ability to deliver quality crosses. the idea was sound the player chosen to fulfil that role was not.

One more depressing season coming right up.
Yup. Even more depressive by the fact that we had the funds this time.
You're all pissing me off now.

I'm gonna just shut the forum & put a sign up:

Due to Liverpool Football Club forfeiting their season, going into administration & selling Anfield to Everton Football Club for £1.50, all due to buying Stewart Downing this summer, we have decided to not bother discussing football any longer, cos it's all shit.
Its not all doom and gloom, and it is better to have Downing at the bench than Nabil El Zahr. Ill give you that.

But I am not only supporting the red shirts. I care about the guys, well at least most of them. I want to support them because they offer something back. I would not support Nani if he came over here and behaved like the cock he is. He is, no matter if he has good crosses, a totally uninteresting guy. Downing.. Well, I have no big issues with him, but he is not exciting me at all. A bit like Gareth Barry did not excite me at all. Adam? I prefer Ming. We have bought henderson, and we might even have Aquaman back. The area is sorted at the moment, and we do not have european footie to offer, hence the number of games next year is limited. If we are to spend cash, let us spend on people with either a huge potential, like Caroll and Suarez signings, or lets buy players that are a lot better than what we got. Adam in for Ming? He aint better, and we send out a player I like, for someone unintersting chap.... I dont like that.
Fucking hell I got a lot of piss thrown after me when saying Downing, Adam etc was poor aquisitions. I guess I had a point there mates!!!

Doctor Mac - you've gone very quiet on Charlie Adam after lauding it all over here during his 3 good game career with us.

Im not reading this in case I was positive about signing him. I dont think I could take the self loathing.
Fucking Super Stu.

He's had a shit spell, he hasn't been that bad where he's only had "three good games", you said fuck all while he was playing well (he's second only to Suarez for the amount of goals he's been involved in) and you were obviously proven right over Enrique. Oh.

Nope.

I always find the glee that some people display with regards to failures that they called a little strange. 'he's failed and I was the one that told you so, yay'

No it is not coincidental. But there is no place in the engine room for players that need others to carry their game. Adam has shown he is not capable to put in a shift defensively when needed. i cant put my finger on if he is just to slow or he is unfit or he just cant read the game properly. However it is no doubt that he often leaves to big room in front of CDs open, and that cost us twice against Bolton.

Well Downing hasnt failed. He was exciting as fresh dog poo his first 28 years, and he still is exciting as fresh dog poo. He hasnt failed he just is who he always was. And I told you who he was ;)

And again - I pointed this out weeks ago. Not having Lucas around to carry him through games has showed him up fir the fairly average midfielder he is.

He's a 7/8M footballer, what can we expect really? Just a pity we didn't buy a better one for that money.

Not having Lucas around has effected the team, not just Adam, we need a defensive midfielder. It doesn't mean he carried him, it means that he took some of the defensive burden off him and allowed him to play his normal game. The complimented each other well. Just like when everyone used to say Alonso and Gerrard should play in a central two and half the time they'd get shown up by the Robbie Savages of the Premiership because they didn't have a holding player there to allow them to play their natural game.

'carry' is a bit much I would say it's fairer to say he (lucas) allows him (adam) more freedom to play his natural game.

This is right. Adam already has nearly as many assists as Lucas has accrued in his entire LFC career. That these have dried up is partly because he's having to inhibit his natural game because he lacks Lucas plugging the holes. This is obvious, and Ryan is a troll.

I think it's a little more than that doc. His passing and set pieces seem to be completely off at the moment as well. He's not doing the simple things right at the moment. He's not alone though

Even tom werner got it wrong

"I do have a funny story to tell you! When we first were talking about Stewart Downing, we looked on the internet to see what we could learn about him. And there was some footage of Stewart that maybe you can show our fans, where he is, from 30 yards away, kicking a football into five different trash cans and it's brilliant.

John (Henry) and I said, 'Oh my god, this player is brilliant, we've got figure out a way to make a deal with him.' We later found out of course that the footage was somewhat doctored but we were so excited about Downing joining Liverpool."
