Ok, this thread has been in the offing for a while, and it’s really inspired by last summer when so many people argued that we couldn’t get better than the likes of Downing, Adam etc. because we didn’t have CL football. Just so that we don’t see those kind of arguments repeated this summer, and also for lack of anything better to discuss, I thought it’d be a good idea to come with up realistic transfer targets for the positions we’re really looking to strengthen this summer. And just so that these are actually realistic, I’m refusing to (a) consider any player from top 4 clubs from the PL, La Liga, or Serie A; and (b) also ruling out the cream of the young players (the likes of Hazard, Martinez, Goetze etc.), and all such players who we’d have little to no chance of signing. Also, this is a little different from Oncy’s find the next Muniain thread, as I’m looking less at prospects and more at established first-teamers.

So here are my first few recommendations (I’ll try and make more later):

Strikers

I’ve said all season that we don’t necessarily need a good ‘finisher’, what we need is a good all-round footballer, who’ll mesh well with Suarez. To my mind, that’s a player who’s quick, technical, has good movement, and is capable of leading the line playing as a runner in front of Suarez. Those are the kind of players I’d like us to look at when we’re buying a striker this summer. Excluded the likes of Cavani, Llorente , Damiao etc. who we’ve little chance of getting.

(i) Loic Remy – Marseille are struggling, and won’t make the CL this season. Add the fact that Remy’s been looking for a move to England for a while, you can bet he’s going to move this summer. And we should be all over him. He’s 24 with the right health history. 56 goals in his four seasons in France (which is a low scoring league). Exactly the attributes we want – quick, strong, good with both feet, good in the air, technically competent, solid work rate, and superb movement. He’s not Henry, he’s not Cisse – he’s something very well balanced in the middle, who’ll only improve with better players around him. I reckon he’d go for around 18-20 million, and would be excellent business at that price. He’s also been stated several times as preferring a move to England – and given that none of the Mancs, City, Arsenal, Chelsea, or Newcastle are likely to be looking for a striker, this should really be between us and Spurs. And if Spurs don’t make the CL, there’s no reason why we shouldn’t be able to get him. For those who haven’t seen him, here’s a vid:

(ii) Luiz Adriano – Brazilian 24 year old who plays for Shakhtar Donetsk. 37 goals in his last two seasons. Similar attributes to Remy – big, strong, quick, and likes to lead the line. A touch of more flair but less consistency than Remy. He’s been impressive in the CL as well, and though Shakhtar is a CL club, a move to Liverpool would obviously be a step up. He’d be a gettable target, but would cost a bit I reckon.

(iii) Kevin Mirallas – 24 year old Belgian who plays for Olympiakos. 34 goals in his last two seasons, and top scorer in Greece this year. He’s quick (not electric), has good movement, and excellent skill and technical ability. He’s also got a bit of arrogance that I like, the kind you’d generally see in top players. I reckon he’d gel superbly with Suarez. Here’s a vid:

(iv) Seydou Doumbia – Doumbia is relatively well known, having been one of Europe’s highest scoring players in the last few years. 102 goals in the last 4 seasons. Granted it’s been playing in the Swiss and Russian leagues, but he clearly knows how to score. 33 goals in Russia this year, and by and far the top scorer there. Strong, quick and powerful – at the very least, I see him being as successful as Yakubu in the PL. He’d cost a bit, but would certainly be gettable. For those who’ve never seen him play, here’s a vid:

(v) Burak Yilmaz –26 year old Turk who plays for Trabzonspor. He’s virtually unheard of as he’s really a very late developer. But why him? Cause he’s banged in 53 goals in the Turkish league in the last two seasons, including 33 this season, which is a record apparently. He’s built like a fucking tank, moves pretty swiftly, and bangs them in like nothing else. Not sure how he’d fare in a better league (especially since he’s not really a youngster), but he’s surely worth a look? Vid below:

Other options: Welliton (Spartak Moscow), John Guidetti (Feyenoord/Man City), Rodrigo Moreno (Benfica), Jackson Martinez (Jaguares), Tim Mavatz (PSV), Eric Maxim Chuopo-Moting (Mainz), Andrei Yarmolenko (Dynamo Kiev), Mario Mandzukic (Wolfsburg), Andre Schurrle (Leverkusen), Luc Castaignos (Inter), Matias Suarez (Anderlecht)

Wingers/Wing-forwards

Another absolute priority, and we should be looking not at a player who gets to the bye-line and crosses but rather a player who can run with the ball, and distort defensive shapes, whether by cutting in or going out wide. The last thing we need is a one-dimensional ‘crosser’ like Downing. We need a wing-forward in the mould of Robben or Ronaldo. My favourites (excluding of course the likes of Hazard and Lucas Moura):

(i) Douglas Costa – Left-footed Brazilian winger who plays for Shakhtar. I’ve raved about him for a while now, and it’s primarily because he plays like a mini-Barnes. Pace, balance, skill and an absolutely gorgeous left foot. He moved to Shakhtar in 2010 for 6 million. Since then he’s been very impressive in Europe – tore apart Fulham in the Europa League a couple of years ago, and scored an absolute cracker against Roma in the CL last year. Still only 21, but for some reason there’s not that much hype around him as there was once (when the Mancs were after him), which is a good thing as we can’t afford the likes of Hazard, Moura, Reus etc. But if we can get this guy, IMO we won’t need to. Vid below:

(ii) Dries Mertens – 24 year old Belgian winger who plays for PSV, having moved from Utrecht last season. Hazard is the hyped one, but there’s the off chance Mertens could be better. Small but very quick and explosive. And has amazing end product. 12 goals for Utrecht last season. And 21 goals for PSV already this season. Granted it’s the Dutch league, but he’s not even a striker! I’d love him at Anfield. Vid below:

(iii) Luciano Narsingh – 21 year old Dutch right-winger who plays for Heerenveen.I think Modo brought him up first, and I like him a lot too. He’s not dissimilar to Lucas Moura, extremely quick right winger, with bags of skill. His stats are pretty incredible – 5 goals and 16 assists last year, and 12 goals and 26 assists this year! Vid below:

(iv) Sebastien Giovinco – Not really a winger, but he’d qualify as a wing-forward/free attacker that I’d want to share the creative burden of the team with Suarez. Giovinco’s considered a huge talent in Italy, but plays for Parma who aren’t anywhere near the CL. I have no clue how gettable he is, or whether any of the bigger clubs in Italy are queuing up for him, but I’d love him at Anfield. Tiny, but quick and skilful as fuck, I reckon he’d do very well in England. I’d absolutely love him alongside Suarez. Video:

(v) Junior Hoilett – Needn’t say much as everyone’s seen him play anyway. I do reckon he has the kind of quality to be in the rung of players we should be looking at (given that we can’t afford the likes of Hazard etc.). Video, for the heck of it, below:

Other options: Adam Johnson (City), Giorginio Wijnaldum (PSV), Gokhan Tore (Hamburg), Georgi Chanturia (Vitesse), Alessio Cerci (Fiorentina), Alejandro Gomez (Catania), Markel Susaeta (Bilbao), Willian (Shakhtar)

Holding midfielders

Spearing isn’t really a holding midfielder, and no one knows what kind of form Lucas will return in. A top quality holding midfielder could go a long way in getting the shape of team, and the set up right. M’vila and Fernando are the obvious top choices, but if they’re too expensive, we need to look at the following:

(i) Etienne Capoue – 22 year old Frenchman who plays for Toulouse. I’ve mentioned him before. He’s a powerful and long-legged holding midfielder with fairly good composure on the ball. He’s been Toulouse’s vice captain this year, and one of their more consistent players in front of defence, and also slotting in defence when required. I reckon he’s a more mature player than Sissoko (who’s really a box-to-box mid than a defensive midfielder) and would fit our needs if we’re looking for a proper holding player in place of Lucas. Vid below:

(ii) Gary Medel – 24 year old Chilean who plays for Sevilla. Mascherano fans should love him as he’s a very similar player. Small but strong, and with a fiery temperament. Like Mascherano, tackles like a pitbull, but is probably a slightly better passer. He’s also apparently something of a Messi specialist having marked him out of games when Sevilla has played Barcelona. I reckon he’s going to be one of the better DMs in world football in the coming years. Vid below:

(iii) Radja Nainggolan – 23 year old Belgian international who plays for Cagliari, and has been one of the most impressive central midfielders in Serie A this season. Juve are apparently interested, though they have Vidal (who’s been in fine form), and might not really need such a player. He’s a strong all round footballer, a bit like Scott Parker. Sits in central midfield – intercepts, tackles, and passes well. I suspect he’s going to be much talked about in the near future. Vid below:

(iv) Sven Bender – 21 year old German DM playing for Dortmund. Probably he closest thing we’ll get to a new Didi. The fact that he plays for Dortmun will however make him very difficult to get. He’s been an ever present, and a very important cog in their midfield, so he’s going to be very difficult to pry away, and would cost a bomb as well, I reckon. His twin Lars, who plays for Leverkusen, may be a lot more gettable, but he’s slightly more offensive minded a player. Video of Sven below:

(v) Felipe Seymour – 24 year old Chilean midfielder who plays for Catania. Unlike Medel, he isn’t someone who flies into tackles, but tactically he’s superb. Sits there and sops up the pressure and is an excellent passer. Vid below:

Other options: Javi Garcia (Benfica), Walter Gargano (Napoli), Rio Mavuba (Lille), Carlos Casemiro (Sao Paulo), Nigel De Jong (City), Maxime Gonalons (Lyon), Tomas Rincon (Hamburg)

Attacking midfielders

A Silva or a Mata should really be a priority for us. We’re crying out for a bit of invention in the final third. The good thing is Europe is studded with young players of the kind; we just need to smart in picking them out. My recommendations (excluding the likes of Eriksen, Goetze, Muniain etc.):

(i) Mateo Kovacic – 17 year old Croat who’s already a first team fixture at Dinamo Zagreb. A huge talent, he’s going to be special, this kid. Vision, passing, skill on the ball – he’s got it all. Watch below:

(ii) Marvin Martin – You’ve heard of him, the 21 year old playmaker who plays for Sochaux, who’s already played for France and drawn comparisons with Iniesta. He’s a classic trequartista, very Iniesta or Riquelme like, and is likely to be a fixture in the French team for a while. Sochaux are struggling, and he’s bound to have suitors. I’d like for us to be one of them. Video below:

(iii) Yoann Gourcuff – Everyone’s heard of Gourcuff’s talent, but he hasn’t exactly pulled trees since moving to Lyon from Milan. The thing is that Lyon don't look like making the CL this season, and a change in setting might just bring the best out of him. His not-too-great form might and lack of CL football for Lyon might make him gettable at a decent price too.

(iv) Alan Dzagoev – Dzagoev has been touted for a while, and he’s still only 21. Again likely to have no shortage for suitors, but shouldn’t be completely ungettable.

(v) Diego Perotti – Argentine midfielder for Sevilla who reminds me a bit of Pires. Not an out and out winger, but more an attacking midfielder. We’ve been linked with him before and he’d be a good pick-up.

Other options: Ryad Boudebouz (Sochaux), Hernanes (Lazio), Moussa Dembele (Fulham), Josip Ilicic (Udinese), Jonathan de Guzman (Villareal), Carlos Eduardo (Rubin Kazan), Gaston Ramirez (Bologna), Javier Aquino (Cruz Azul), Gylfi Sigurdsson (Swansea), Ivan Rakitic (Sevilla)

Central midfield playmakers

I don’t know if we’re going to be in for a player in this mould. While we’re crying out for a player who can set the tempo in midfield, there are probably more pressing concerns, and we could always groom Shelvey in that role. That said, if we’re looking to buy that kind of player, here are the players I want us to be looking at (excluded the likes of Martinez and Montolivo of course):

(i) Kevin Strootman – 21 year old Dutch international playing for PSV. If we want a midfielder in the Alonso mould, we should pull out all stops to get this guy. He’s a brilliant talent, and will be one of the best midfielders in the world in the coming few years. Left footed player who like Alonso likes operating from a deep lying position. Silky touch on the ball, a wonderful passer, strong work rate, and pops with his fair share of goals as well. There’ll be a lot of suitors so we’ll have our work cut out. Video below:

(ii) Milan Badelj – 23 year old Croat playing for Dinamo Zagreb. Outstanding young player, who’s been in Zagreb’s first team for over three seasons, and is considered by some to be better than Modric. Similar to Strootman in playing style except that he’s right footed. He’s bound to be moving soon, and would be a great talent to pick-up.

(iii) Roman Eremenko – 24 year old Russian born Finnish international who plays for Rubin Kazan. Virtually unheard of, but he’s one of the most underrated players in Europe. Made his name playing for Dynamo Kiev, and Rubin bought him for 13 million in the summer. Outstanding all-round player, great work rate, and a consistent and incisive passer from central midfield. He’d be great in the PL, IMO. Video below:

(iv) Ilkay Gundogan – 21 year old Turk who plays for Dortmund. An absolutely brilliant young prospect, very reminiscent of a young Xavi. Just watch this video below, and tell me how exciting he looks:

(v) Koke – Another one in the Spanish midfield conveyor belt. Unlike Alacantra and Canales, he’d be gettable as he plays for Atletico Madrid. He’s only 19, but already establishing himself in Atletico’s first team. Like with all these Spanish midfield gems, he’s got great vision, balance and passing ability. We missed out on Herrara (who went for a pittance last summer), so it’d be great to get this guy. Video below:

Other options: Joe Allen (Swansea), Clement Grenier (Lyon), Borja Valero (Villareal)

Great thread mate. Agree with a lot of the players.

Belhanda would be one of my top targets this summer

D-mish, what a truly awesome post. Brilliant, lots of names I haven't heard of even.

Christ almighty.

There's a lot of players I'd heard of from scouting on fifa (I know I'm sad) but knew little of them.

Fantastic work and dedication mish

Great thread. You should add:

Bas Doost, Herenveen
Jordan Rhodes, Huddersfield

Jordan Rhodes???????? Are you serious?
Sorry to disappoint you but the kid's been outstanding this season.
What like 35 goals in 32 appearances?
Sure I don't often advocate buying English well except Wilshire (which will never happen) but he's good. We need a third striker and if £5-6 Million is enough, then why not?

I know who he is, but would he seriously cut it in the prem? We need to be buying proven quality, not potential. Look where that lead us to last summer
Listen if I had to pick between Rhodes and Jovetic, you know what the obvious choice would be....

Stephen Fletcher.

We have to be thinking about Clint Dempsey. He is tied for 4th place on the top scorer's list. If you check out this list, http://soccernet.espn.go.com/stats/scorers/_/league/eng.1/barclays-premier-league?cc=5901 you'll notice that out of the top 10, he's the only player that is not an out and out striker. He operates on either wing (usually the left) and behind the striker. He also shifts up to striker when a goal is needed. He only has one year on his contract, and has admitted ambitions of playing champions league football. If arsenal do not try to buy him, I think we could get him for around 12 million or Kuyt plus 6 mil. He has improved every single year he has been in the premier league, and would pay for himself simply through the marketing opportunities we would get from the States

He has been a consistent goal scorer and creator in the past few seasons. He is superior to many of our midfielders. Based on this we should be considering him.
Also, i decided today that i want torres. If he would come back and issue an apology to fans id forgive him. I think he and suarez would be ace together.

Dempsey is not really a 'midfielder' - he plays off the striker and has little, to no, defensive responsibilities (something rarely even afforded to Dembele, who's their creative force). I think he's a decent player, punching way above his weight. Would he improve our squad? Yup, definitely but in a position where we should play Gerrard (behind the striker) or someone better (Striker). It's tough to tell how big fish in small ponds pan out in the bigger ponds - but if no big clubs go for him, I'd be wary. Perhaps a replacement for Kuyt - that would be good.

What a fantastic post by Mishraji!!!

Between Roopy, KHL, Pesam and now dmishra I think SCM can give Liverpool scouts a run for their money.

Heh, never expected someone on SCM to call me that.
:)

Grewing up in Chennai, I had a classmate with the same surname as yours and we all used to call him Mishraji.

Now because of that I end up calling anyone with that surname Mishraji, Just a habit which I cannot get out off :)
