Tottenham could turn to Uruguay playmaker Gaston Ramirez if Rafael van der Vaart secures a move to Schalke.

Holland star Van der Vaart has been sounded out about a move to Germany, where his wife Sylvie works for a TV station.

Bologna midfielder Ramirez is seen as a ready-made replacement after an impressive two years in Serie A.

The 21-year-old has been closely followed by Liverpool, but it remains to be seen which players new boss Brendan Rodgers wants to pursue.

Reports in Italy have linked Manchester City with Ramirez, but Roberto Mancini played down that suggestion this week.

Bologna are ready to cash in on a player who cost them under £2.5million when they signed him from Penarol two years ago.

But they will demand at least £14m for a player who is best deployed in the hole between midfield and attack.

Inter Milan are keen, but only if they fail to land Lucas Moura from Sao Paulo, while Napoli have him on a list of potential replacements for Ezequiel Lavezzi.

Occasionally playing as a second striker, Ramirez has scored 15 goals over the last two seasons for Bologna.

Van der Vaart has tried to play a straight bat to questions about Schalke, adding on Wednesday: 'In football, anything can happen.'

MANCHESTER CITY have reportedly joined the race to sign Bologna's attacking midfielder Gaston Ramirez.

According to calciomercato.com the Barclays Premier League champions have been in contact with the 21-year-old's agent, Pablo Betancourt.

The Uruguay international has been strongly linked with a move away from Bologna and is a target of several top European clubs.

Speaking to the site, Betancourt said: "I confirm that Juventus and Manchester City have called me to show their interest, but I have also received an interesting offer from Wolfsburg and from an important Spanish club."

Bologna have several offers on the table for their Uruguayan attacker Gaston Ramirez, but are holding out for €25m, says his agent.

The 21-year-old has caught the attention in his two seasons so far in Serie A with Emilia-Romagna outfit Bologna and rumours are strong that he will be moving on this summer.

Confirming a change in the player’s representation situation, his agent has suggested that it is a matter of discussing the bids to have come in with the Felsinei.

“Now begins a new story for Ramirez - the boy has signed under the management of a company run by my cousin, FIFA agent Oscar,” revealed Pablo Bentancurt of his client to FCInterNews.it.

“We have signed an exclusive contract with Bologna, which runs from today. The only agent for the guy is now me and I want to specify that other agents speaking on Gaston’s situation do so without knowing anything.

“We must meet with Bologna to understand his situation - there are offers for him and we must see what the Rossoblu want to do.

“From Germany, Wolfsburg have offered €15-18m, whilst from Russia, Zenit St Petersburg have shown up. With Liverpool, however, the situation is at a standstill because the Reds are just choosing their Coach.

“Bologna want €25m, but an agreement can be found - it is obvious that Bologna would do well from his sale. They would receive 70 per cent, whilst 30 per cent will go to Penarol, as agreed earlier. Thus, the higher the price, the higher the proportion of cash that will be.

“Gaston is a very young player with a broad spectrum of prospects - he has done well in Italy, both in a qualitative and quantitative way. It is normal that many clubs now want him.”

Bologna general director Roberto Zanzi has revealed they are negotiating with a top European club over the sale of sought-after playmaker Gaston Ramirez.

The Uruguay international has been strongly linked with a move away from Bologna this summer and is a reported target of Manchester City, Liverpool and Juventus.

"We are negotiating with an important foreign club for Ramirez," Zanzi said to Italian newspaper Il Resto del Carlino.

Even though Zanzi has said that the current offers have been too low, Ramirez’s agent Pablo Betancourt has stated that it was “very probable” the Uruguayan international would move on.

Bologna let it be known that a potential buyer would be looking at a figure of around £20m to prise the attacking midfielder away.

Even though the European club with most interest is unconfirmed, Manchester City boss Roberto Mancini noted that he had strong feelings regarding the South American player, saying that “Ramirez is a good young player, with great potential”.

Ramirez joined Bologna from Penarol in 2010 and scored eight goals in 33 league appearances last season to help the Rossoblu finish ninth in Serie A.The South American is under contract with Bologna until June 2016.
