[article]Given Jurgen Klopp’s commitment to giving Liverpool’s next generation a chance, it is no surprise to see players from the club’s thriving academy training alongside the senior stars.

The likes of Rhian Brewster and Curtis Jones, to name but two, are regulars at Melwood.

But eagle-eye Reds supporters spotted a new face when Klopp’s Premier League leaders returned to work at the start of this week.

After being given Monday off after beating Arsenal to move two points clear at the top, Liverpool were back to business on Tuesday as they started their preparations for this Saturday’s trip to Burnley.

And pictured battling and working alongside Sadio Mane, James Milner, Fabinho and Co was Leighton Clarkson.

Our Liverpool FC correspondent Paul Gorst confirmed that the 17-year-old was also training at Melwood last week.

It continues a dream few months for Clarkson that has seen him sign his first professional contract and get his hands on a FA Youth Cup winner’s medal.

Matt Addison, who follows the fortunes of the Reds’ U18 and U23s teams, gave us the lowdown on Clarkson in our first Academy Show podcast of the season on the Blood Red channel .

“He’s only 17, he comes from Blackburn in Lancashire, so he’s not quite a local lad, but he’s not too far away, and he’s been doing fantastically well as he’s come through the system,” said Matt.

“He kind of plays as a number six – but more of a Jordan Henderson number six than a Fabinho.

"He’s very good on the ball, and he has a brilliant eye for a pass, as do one or two of those U18 players Liverpool have got.

"For him to be training with the first team at 17 is absolutely fantastic. He shortly turns 18 so he’ll be looking for more opportunities to train with the first team in the coming weeks, and what an experience for him to learn from the likes of Jordan Henderson and Fabinho.

“As much as the first team is at a really high level, Jurgen Klopp has shown there are certainly pathways for young players – look at Ki-Jana Hoever last season, he was only 17 when he came in and played against Wolves.

“And there was Trent Alexander-Arnold, of course. He was a similar age to Clarkson when he broke through, and not too many people saw his developing going quite as quickly as it did, even though everyone knew he was a fantastic prospect.

“But it just goes to show if you are training with the first team, and you do impress, Jurgen Klopp will throw you in, and if you do impress again, that’s where you’ll stay.”

Clarkson set up the goal that earned the U18s a 1-1 draw at Wolves last Saturday that maintained their unbeaten start to the season following a 7-1 drubbing of Blackburn Rovers and a 3-2 victory over Stoke City.

Barry Lewtas’s side welcome rivals Manchester United to Kirby this Saturday (11am kick-off) and Matt said: “It’s been entertaining and it’s been full of goals.

“Loads of players have stepped up like Layton Stewart. He has got a big, big opportunity this season. It’s a big ask to match what Paul Glatzel and Bobby Duncan did last season, but so far he seems to be doing that.

"He got two goals in the first game, another goal in the second, so he’s certainly started off on the right track.

“There’s a few players who have moved up from the U18s to the U23s, it’s a new-look side, but it also means players like Matteo Ritaccio, the American youth international, who probably didn’t quite get the opportunities for the U18s last season, is going to be integral.

“It’s a big opportunity for him, a big opportunity for all the players, and a big challenge for the manager as well to integrate them and put them together, but so far, so good.”[/article]

[article]Liverpool midfield prospect Leighton Clarkson has been singled out for praise after spending the international break training alongside senior stars at Melwood.

The 17-year-old, who signed his first professional contract this summer, was one of a number of academy players called up to help bolster numbers at the club's first-team base this week.

And his performances in training have caught the eye of assistant boss Pepijn Lijnders, who describes him as the sort of holding midfielder he and his fellow coaches covet.

Asked about the involvement of several youngsters this week, Lijnders told the club's official website: "[It's] two days of intense training. We have specific exercises like the ‘counter-pressing rondo’, the ‘identity game’, ‘organised chaos’ or the ‘high-intensity game’.

"They all experienced these specific exercises throughout these two days, it was like a little training camp for them.

"There is no better education than good role models, so for them to train with our seniors is irreplaceable.

"In the ‘identity game’ – a set-up of three teams fighting to earn the right to attack – our seniors were divided over three teams as the captains. You see so many incredible processes happening in the rest periods.

"Leighton Clarkson, who sees with his own eyes the constant runs of Sadio and Mo in behind. He has the capacity to play the passes these type of forwards like to receive, he is the type of No6 we really like, the one who can dictate play, but dictate with direction, who can speed up the tempo of the positional play, the one who has always time on the ball.

"Again, talent needs good role models, much more than criticism. Then you see how special our seniors are. The boys receive the treatment they earn and deserve, equal to our seniors, equal to everyone, it works accumulatively.

"I’ve said it before, the character of Jürgen becomes the character of the team and luckily that’s a good thing. It’s the thing that makes all the difference."

While many of those not involved in international fixtures have used the break to take some well-earned rest, it has been a different story for summer signing Adrian San Miguel.

The Spaniard was somewhat unexpectedly thrust into first-team duty by injury to fellow goalkeeper Alisson Becker, and so committed himself to extra sessions in recent days in order to speed up his adaptation process.

Back in the days a number six was a CD. Number 4 was a ancklesnapping midfielder. Now they show up with 84 and is referred to as a Jordan Henderson like number six. What exactly happened?

So the team could be:

---------------------Kelleher
Hoever----Gomez-----Lovren------Milner
----------------------Lallana
--------------Keita------------Ox
Elliott--------------------------------Jones
------------------Brewster

I'm all for it. I mean if it helps the kids sure.
Trial by fire I guess. Klopp is taking a risk not bringing any of the starting players as backup.
Still, I'm really excited to see how the kids do. Looking forward to it

Yeah, that line-up could happen. I was a bit dubious before I saw the travelling squad, but it looks like he's rested almost everyone.
Most interested to see the young players obviously, but also be good to see the likes of Keita, Lallana, Ox, Lovren and Gomez get starts.

Still, as FFF has already said, it's got potential for disappointment, for all the reasons he gave.

Based on our recent history in the domestic cups I'm making the conscious choice to just stream the match while pretending to work, rather than burning a half day of vacation to go the pub.

am in college tonight, please just announce the score every now and then in your posts.

Time for the fringe players to shine. Big night for Brewster. Be interesting to see how Elliot performs

Happy to see Keita, Ox and Gomez back in the team. I don't rate Jones, so I think he'll be a bit of a non-entity.

Happy with starting line up, but we need to stay in these cups to give game time to the "stars on the bench" and to blood the kids.

Would have liked more firepower on the bench. It's not good enough to lose with the 2nd string. These are important matches to keep everyone sharp...

The 3 kids up front will have a quality base in midfield and defense to help them express themselves. They need to take their chance. I think Curtis Jones will shine; I've been very impressed by what I've seen from him in the reserves.

I would of kept one of our big guns on the bench.
Mmm that would be sensible but I guess this just shows Klopp's disdain for the competition. By resting the entire team he's probably thinking that it's just too much this season. Don't forget the club world cup.

I understand Klopp but I’d of only used the big gun if needed.
