I've no problem with unions existing and doing their best for their members, so long as they don't have any special priveleges, but can we not acknowledge that a major aim of theirs is to make it harder for unemployed people wanting to enter a certain trade, in order to maintain and increase their members' earnings? That's the idea. Let the market smooth the transition. As wages are suppressed and previously desirable areas become less pleasant by overcrowding etc wages will fall, and people will leave to find other areas etc etc. It's not perfect, but you'd eventually get some kind of equilibrium.
