The incredible Xabi Alonso thread 2009.

Re: Xabi Alonso will stay at Anfield, says Rafa Benitez

I prefer to keep Alonso but if this has to be done then as long as we get a quality attacking player then it might be worth it. also hopefully Gerrard will play in CM more

Hi everyone. I've just joined here.

From what I gather, Bascombe's source is Parry, so if this is true, it's absolutely shocking stuff for a player to be treated in this way. You do not sell your best players. Xabi has been our best player by a country mile this season.

Trust me, we'll be a hell of a lot weaker without Xabi conducting the orchestra from the centre of the pitch. Barry is a nothing player. I like to call him Mr Invisible because that's exactly what he is.

Welcome to the site Mashed Up. I like you already.

Maybe everyone going to the game tomorrow should be making a lot of noise for Xabi to stay. We all know how much Rafa loves 'the fansz'.

it would actually be awesome if he was invisible.

I like him better when I can see his face Skulls.

we should just all take a seat on one of rafa's balls and enjoy the ride 8)

Re: Xabi Alonso will stay at Anfield, says Rafa Benitez

it makes me wonder how on earth we won 4-1 at old trafford with Lucas in CM the way people go on about Alonso

he's a good player, great passer but you can get away without him I reckon and still win

the mancs play fletcher in midfield.

What? A central midfield of Barry, Mascherano and Lucas for a whole season? Really?

Re: Xabi Alonso will stay at Anfield, says Rafa Benitez

I am not so sure it is downward Sheik if Barry comes. Moot point at the moment.

If xabi really wants to leave, we can't do much about it except to milk the situation to the max.

I am not so sure that Rafa wanted Xabi gone end of last season just because of the birth incident. To be honest, Xabi was average for a season or two already.

welcome Mascher

Gerrard can also play deeper if Tevez or someone like him comes

I don't get the fuck Benitez shouts here at all.

If Xabi wants to go, then that's fair enough.

The future?

Re: Xabi Alonso will stay at Anfield, says Rafa Benitez

The simple fact to this whole saga is that Rafa wants to raise extra funds he can sell a number of players including Riera and even Arbeloa. This leads me to think that it's a personal thing with Xabi.

I forgave Rafa for his treatment of Crouch, for his treatment of Babel and just about forgave him for his shambolic treatment of Keane. But if Xabi is sold, I will never forgive him.

Xabi is entering the prime of his career. It will be a catastrophic decision to get rid.

As for Lucas, he is not good enough. The Manc game was a one off. Yes it was a superb victory, but lets be honest, they were absolutely shambolic that day.

Thanks for all your welcomes by the way. ;)

I can't see us going 4-4-2 and I can't see Benitez pushing Gerrard back into a central midfield role.

Because if you cross him you're history?

maybe the fans crossed him by singing 'stick your gareth barry up your arse'?

So you build on your foundations, not weaken one of the most important positions on the pitch.

i'm not having that, we were the only team to go there and beat them this season they weren't shambolic (they took the lead) and Lucas played his part in CM

we beat the champions of the world 4-1, their heaviest defeat of the season without this player who is so central in Alonso?!

as for selling a number of players, maybe he doesn't want to or they wont raise enough.

Re: Xabi Alonso will stay at Anfield, says Rafa Benitez

Great. So because of one victory, Lucas is now our saviour and we can rely on him as an able replacement for Alonso for a whole season. Fucking hell. I'm off to curdle some milk.

Re: Xabi Alonso will stay at Anfield, says Rafa Benitez

no, the point is midfielders (in my opinion) are overstated having watched the mancs win titles with combinations of O'Shea/Fletcher/Carrick/Giggs/Anderson i'm pretty sure you can get away with someone decent and hard working as long as there is quality elsewhere

Depends on the circumstances, if Alonso wants to leave there is no point keeping an unhappy player. If Rafa thinks he can improve the team and make a profit then why not?Maybe we have no money and wont have enough to buy our targets even if we manage to sell our fringe players? Maybe he wants to break up the Spanish clique that FFF mentioned in another thread.

Personally I think gaining Barry and Tevez, even if we lose Alonso, would be an improvement over what we currently have.

Yes, the Mancs did take the lead, but their defence was attrocious that day. They were very lucky against Inter the game before and we absolutely punished them for their howlers.

The game that summed it up Xabi's importance for me was the Preston game when Xabi went off. We lost complete shape and control of the game.

Lucas is simply not good enough. There is no getting around this.

I didn't realise Giggs was a central midfielder. Or are you talking about midfielders as a whole in which case you've forgotten the best of the all, Ronaldo. Or was that a mistake and you meant Scholes instead of Giggs?

Why does that matter? Even if you believe that Benitez was at fault for us not winning the title (I'm assuming you do from you tone), we still have to improve, thats what every other team will be doing, and signing a new player in any position is a gamble to some degree. If Benitez is selling him in the belief he can improve the team then is he taking a big gamble, but it isn't out of the realms of possibility that we will be a better team because of it.
