Liverpool manager Brendan Rodgers says that he sees defender Daniel Agger as a key member of his squad.
The Danish centre-back endured a stop-start 2013-14 season and there were reports that Liverpool might be looking to offload him this summer.

However, he captained the side for Wednesday’s 2-1 friendly loss to his former team Brondby and Rodgers says the 29-year-old is very much part of his plans for the upcoming season.

“Daniel is one of a number of excellent players that we have playing at the back,” said Rodgers.

“He has been unfortunate in the time that I've been at the club because the big issue for Dan has been his availability. He has been out injured for a number of games.

“But he's an excellent player, an international captain, and he's had a very good career at Liverpool.

"He's at a good age, 29, and his experience can be good for us this season. He signed a new contract last season.

"You saw in the first half (against Brondby) that he's an excellent player, a very good footballer and someone that is an important member of our squad."

Looks like Brendan has a career as an estate agent to look forward to if the old football thing doesn't work out

I'd sell him in a blink if the right offer came in, as I don't think he's all that great. But, I'd be more than happy to keep him as backup. We'll need 4 good CB's.

A week later, "He was key for us against Brondby, but the 10 million bid from Pescara was too good to turn down"

"He's not given enough credit for his footballing ability" is what rodgers said about carroll. We know the rest. A good offer and agger is gone.

Indispensable.

That would be why we're looking at a £20m ball playing centre back from Southampton. And why we spent £18m on a left footed centre back last season.

... and no guarantee that they will work at Liverpool. I dread the idea of two foreigners, both new to the club, playing in the middle of our defence. It was bad enough between Sakho and Skrtel and the latter is a club veteran. The fcukers are unable to communicate with each other-- just go back and watch how we rapidly shipped those goals at Selhurst Park.

He's all that great. The only downside is his injury record.

He's not great, he's like the others, decent but not indispensable.

As for "dreading the idea of two foreigners", you mean like Henchoz and Hyypia were? We threw a German, a Swiss, a Finnish and English player together at once and had the best defense around.

Nobody is indispensable, of course. Why would you ever use that word for a human being, especially a football player?

As for Hyypia-- he was more than a damn fine defender. He could organise and talk (in English) with the entire back four. That was my point, Mark.

I know mate, I just mean that they're much of a muchness, either way we need a leader and then any one of them could flourish, I'm not convinced by Sakho btw and still wish Agger and Skrtel would have a brilliant injury free season 'together'. They're at an age when they really should be the experienced cool heads they've often promised to be.

ahhh..... I miss Football Manager, it just takes up so much of your life when you're into it.

I played it a while ago. Was home for 2 weeks after a shoulder surgery and was bored.
Got hooked like a crack addict. Stopped when I was back in work though and havent played again since.

It's been about 5yrs or so since I properly got stuck into it, I haven't even got the latest one.

Championship manger is a life wrecker. You stop playing and realise you lost four hours of your life then have to cope with the feeling of disgust that leaves.

And then you carry on playing.

I haven't played for years though this thread is now making me want to.

Haha yea just a couple more matches... It's dark outside.

I haven't touched it since championship manager 3 which was about 2000, Heggem and Seth Johnson were in my side.

Which is why we want Lovren. Not that i'm saying he's in Hyypia's league, but he's a leader and organiser which is what we are desperately lacking. Both agger and skrtel have shown that they are followers, not leaders.

I don't think it's that simple. Agger's club vice-captain and captain of his country, and Skrtel wore the armband for us a time or two under Kenny. It's certainly true that they haven't shown for us that they can organise the back four, but I've always wondered why not.

Being made captain doesn't mean you're any good at it. Skrtel and Agger have never shown any leadership skills at the back. Never marshalled the defence or been vocal in any way. They are not leadership material. Lovren does all that hence why Rodgers wants him.

Agger not vocal? I think that casts some doubt on your other claim.
