He's neither a legend nor as some have said here the worst manager in the league. However the excuse that he put all his eggs in the European basket is tiresome. They were terrible long before he started spouting that.

Clearly they don’t have the squad depth and protected his players that could to go all out for the EL after the horrific injury crisis that made getting top 5 completely unrealistic. Finishing 8th and no European football next season, no trophy and no money would have been idiotic and would have resulted in him getting sacked vs rolling the dice and getting what he did.
