No gloating, but interested to know.

So, the starting 11 yesterday cost less than AC and are one place above Liverpool in the league. Losing 2 good players to the Nations Cup and a couple of injurys and they still look like a good team.

Are liverpool stuck in a funny middle ground where they cant spend enough to buy THE best, but cant risk the Newcastle approach of buy cheap, develop and sell on (im not suggesting becoming a selling club, more buy cheap and develop the talent). So end up buying good players on increased fee's

Do you have to buy big name players, because of the investment?

It's because we're destined to shoot ourselves in the foot till the end of time overspending on mediocre players.

I think there is some truth in what you're saying in that we do try and buy players that are already established yet bleat on about being committed to developing young talent... but ultimately, it just boils down to bad management.

We're stuck in a funny middle ground where we have enough money to periodically buy good players, it's a horrible burden to bear. Not to worry though, we've found a way of dealing with the whole distasteful business. Once every few years we splash out on a bunch of total shit.

We're stuck in some twilight zone where we have to read a million lazy articles about how our owners will make us into a moneyball team, then watch with no great surprise as players who don't score goal on paper, don't score goals when all assembled on a football pitch.

We're stuck in some situation where I'm such a fucking rube for this team that when we play competent football, I begin to believe that somehow these pedestrian players will form voltron or something and begin scoring goals, when I know it's not true.

I think spending money on players to turn your from a mediocre side to a good side is far easier than spending money to turn you from a good side to a great side.

It's not as hard as we make it.

When you have a player you know is good, try not to sell him. Build around known good players.

Hope based strategy often fails.

you would do that in an ideal world but it's not an ideal world. take the RVP at arsenal, he is not signing a new contract and his current contract is ticking down so what are arsenal to do? how could we have held onto mash? building around good players isn't an exact science either.

Newcastle United are set to seal a deal for Freiburg star Papiss Cisse, Sky Sports understands.

The 26-year-old has emerged as one of the most feared strikers in Germany over the past 18 months.

He scored 22 goals last season and has already scored nine this term.

The likes of Arsenal, Tottenham, Blackburn and Aston Villa have all been strongly linked whilst Sunderland were understood to be close to sealing a deal last summer.

The Black Cats have again been strongly linked this January, but it is now believed that Newcastle are close to pulling off a transfer coup.

Cisse has been away with Senegal, coincidentally with Newcastle's Demba Ba.

Cisse is now on Tyneside at the club's training ground to undergo a medical and finalise the deal before flying back out to Africa.

The deal, which will be worth around £10million, is sure to shock many as it was thought Newcastle's only target this month would be a new central defender.

Freiburg have already moved to sign a replacement after bringing in Sebastian Freis from Cologne on Tuesday.

I mentioned him quite a lot on here. It will be interesting to see how he does.

So what's the general feeling on Mike ashley now ? I mean he's still an almighty cock cheese licker and i wouldn't be surprised if he does something mental again soon enough but somebody there is making good decisions . Tiote , cabaye , ba have all been very decent signings and this Cisse lad could be an excellent coup .shafted us for carroll . And they have to be happy with their league position .

Their director of football is dennis wise I believe...

Wise left Newcastle about 3 years ago. Credit to there Scouting Department they've picked up some great bargains along the way.

We should splash the cash and make an offer for Newcastle's scouting team.

Offer Comolli and 30m.

That is my exact sentiment guv'nor!

Mike Ashley is still a fat cunt.

I was reading a good article on the scounting the other day. They use a stat based policy, where if a player doesnt meet certain criteria, they dont look twice at him no matter how well he's doing. The whole thing is about bringing in talent to grow and sell on, but not taking a risk on unproven players like before.

I think they'll break even from this season or next, with the aim of already being ahead of the rest of the league for the Fifa rules.

isn't this EXACTLY what we're meant to be doing?

They are just doing it better.

I read a long article about how a Geordie defensive coach was actually key in a lot of their signings. Cannot remember his name, but he's clearly doing a good job.

Cisse will be a good buy at 10M.

Really? They're teammates for Senegal. I'd expect the Toon to want to play them together.

Exactly, if anything this will entice Ba to stay at Newcastle if he did have any notion about moving on. A bit like our move for Coates I suppose.

I often wonder what data and stats clubs have at their disposal and how they use it.

Is there any way to find out or is it all kept very much under wraps?
