Ive never really paid much attention to what he actually achieved, in case you didnt:
He took Derby from foot of the second division and nothingness to Winning the League and the semi final of the European cup.
Then took Forest from bottom of the second division to league winners and double European champions.
To do that! To do that twice, build a side from scratch to go and do that!?
Amazing really.

Well i knew what he did at Forest, but i didnt know they were a lower league team first off.

Apparantly he scored 250 goals in 270 games for Boro and Sunderland!!!
Fucking hell.

I thought everyone knew that..... mainly in the second division i think, he did his knee quite young.
I read an interview with Gary birtles recently in which he said that the best piece of advice Clough ever gave him as a striker was "never try to make a good chance an excellen one"...
Plenty of old school footy wisdom in that i reckon from a goal a game man.

He didn't get many caps either did he? It seems England hated Clough as a player and as a manager.

Had it not been for him breaking his leg he'd have got loads more. As it was, he had to become a manager at 29.
There's no doubt the man was a cnut. There's equally no doubt that, though he stayed in the game too long, for much of his career he was one of the greatest managers this country's ever seen.
I too have hated him for his comments about Hillsborough, which I'm not mistaken he was once given the chance to clarify and apologize for..he just re-iterated them.
There is no question he's been a phenomenal player and manager though; Kenny once spoke about how Paisley tried to do the usual number on him in the Boot Room and Clough just saw right through that and laughed it off.

He did eventually apologise, 12 years after the event. I found him to be an arrogant smarmy alky.
His family weren't too happy about that movie The Damned United were they? I remember hearing they said it wasn't an accurate portrayal etc. I must watch it.

Johnny Giles sucessfully sued the author of the book for defamation, he made an interesting point when asked why he did it, basically he said the whole story was nonsense but none of the other main protaganists were alive to defend themselves so if he didnt make the case on their behalf then people would think the book was accurate. He made a point of saying Clough was nothing like the way he was portrayed, and thats something Giles and Cloughed hated each other passionately
Clough was a bit of a tragic figure in some ways. He had to quit football very early - these days I imagine his injuries wouldn't have been career threatening at all - and although he had great success as a manager in the 70s the way it all went after that was a bit of a shame. He was drinking so much that I doubt he had a clue what he was doing half the time.
Problem was that he was such a hero at Forest they didn't step in and do anything about it, and he just undid his own good work.
