Consistently staying outside the top four, and not been able to compete for buying the best available players, will keep us on a downward spiral, and after we have been taking for complete mugs in the transfer window lately, I don't foresee that changing.

I'd trade, to get us Champs League football, which in the long run will do us massively more good than the Carling Cup, nice though that may be.

CL football doesn't always guarantee top players, and as we've said a million times, it's not always about the attraction and saleability, it's about identifying players and adjusting to circumstance, Newcastle don't have European Football, and look what they've done this season. I agree that in the longterm European Football is essential to providing the resources to keep in touch with the pack, but we've had money without CL football and fucked it up anyway.

All that is true, but playing the percentages leads to prioritising the CL every time for me.

Strike a nerve did I?

No, I think he was pointing out that you and laughing boy above just aren't that funny. 'Strike a nerve did I?' seems to be your favourite turn of phrase of late, at least it's better than telling everyone how right you were about Carragher being edged out the side, now that he's the wrong side of 30 and no longer capable of putting in brilliant backs to the wall performances against the likes of Barcelona.

Of course it does, but the percentages also point to us qualifying more often than not for CL football. I don't disagree that we need to get that back, but then we could qualify for the next 6 seasons and go without any silverware equally.

Poor Modo, reduced in his little lair to putting his own inane words into the mouth of a great man in order to make him seem less impressive and intelligent than Benitez. What a way to pursue an agenda.

I remember someone saying once that a good way of forecasting the results of games was to look at Lawrenson's predictions and bet the mirror opposite. One can pretty much follow the same rule with Modo's judgments.
Aye! Lawrenson backed us to win the FA!

I wasn't replying to you but thanks anyway. Seems like I did strike a nerve after all.
Don't forget the "this is best transfer window ever"....I LOL every time I think of that thread.

You see Modo, this is why people don't take you seriously, because all you've got in your locker when backed into a corner is "see I've wound you up after all"........while picking your teeth up off the floor.

He is having a particularly bad Monday morning, it has to be said.

In all honesty, I'm having a great Monday morning.
The thing is Mr McGovern, I stopped caring about their opinions ever since they decided that this seasons transfer window was the best ever. So it doesn't really get to me.
We have difference of opinion and despite the majority being strongly against my opinion, I know that in the end doesn't mean that they're right.
*sipping cappuccino on my day off*

Okay Mr. Modo, you continue to troll as many people as possible.

Fuck off Modo. No one has said this seasons transfer window was good, I know you like to think you're out there on your own with radical views about Stuart Downing being shit, but do even you take yourself seriously?

Find me a post, smart arse, where "our opinions" have assessed our season in hindsight as being on the back of a great transfer window. Right after you find us the reasoning behind your brilliant Rafael posts.

I dont know where the wind up and aggro is quite coming from in the thread however i'm sure that there were a number of people sitting around delighted with last summers business and to be fair to Modo you were one of the most positive about it all Mark... I remember myself and Rosco and a few others arguing till we were blue in the face about the wisdom and value of some of our signings and being ridiculed for doing so.

But then it is true to say that even via my own negative tinted glasses I wasn't exactly pessimistic at the start of the season either....it just turned out to be a bag of complete wank...At the time though.... it could well have gone well but...

I think that misrepresents what happened. The argument as I remember it was between those who were reasonably happy and those few who were determined to see doom and gloom before the season had even started. There were few - if any at all - who were "delighted".

I really don't think that's true JJ. There were loads of people calling it an excellent summer and some calling it more or less perfect. I remember because I had deep misgivings about it but didn't complain too much (except about Downing) on here because I was so out of step with the general opinion.

I don't remember it that way Peter. I think there was a very positive reaction to how much dross we got rid of, and I think that should still be the case. I can't remember many genuinely enthusiastic posts about Downing or Adam. With Henderson it was surely mainly 'Henderson Who?' I'm sure hardly anyone said 'These signings will be disastrous' but that was hardly surprising.

It was always going to be positive buzz after spending so much but even among all the outlay there were a good few who raised eyebrows at who we were actually buying and for what cost. I just wish Id been wrong about Downing but even after his signing I was really quite happy.... then we sold meirelles mind you... that was stupid IMO.... but then hes done fuck all this season so....

In hindsight we havent really replaced our dross particularly well however, but that is hindsight, none of us foretold such a dribble of goals all season, people on big cash arriving for big fees and giving a handful of goals.... as i say the season was not good enough.

I always liked ngog, very few agreed.

I did to some extent. He wasn't good enough to be first choice for us, which he had to be for long periods, but in a more balanced squad he'd have been OK as a stand-in. There have been times this season when we could have done with someone like him to come off the bench and nick one.

Exactly

We don't have pace up front and we rarely had a striker on the bench who could come on and possibly get in dangerous positions.

Only now is carroll coming into any sort of form and TBH, what team in their right mind only has 2 strikers

Oh and to shed some light on the debate... I was happy with last summer. I liked downing, adam I was abit concerned but was overly optimistic, Enrique i knew was highly thought of, henderson i knew nothing of. TBH the only thing i think i was annoyed about was the lack of another striker as I wanted Wickham, or someone young to push on the bench.....

Ah time....you make the biggests tits out of the best of us.

I was one of N'Gog's defenders on here but we sold him at absolutely the right time. He'd had some time in the first team, scored a few goals and we made a profit. He wouldn't have seen the light of day this season.
