Don't know if this has been posted in the Chamakh thread and if it has just merge it, mods, but thought this was interesting.

Bordeaux striker Marouane Chamakh has confirmed he wants to join Arsenal on a free transfer in the summer.

Chamakh, 26, is out of contract in June and has already signalled his intention to move to England, but Liverpool are also thought to have been in contact and some reports had suggested a deal was already tied up.

However, Arsenal remain long-term admirers and Chamakh has suggested he hopes to announce a move to Emirates Stadium in the near future.

"My future? Well, I hold all the cards," he said. "I have no reason to be under pressure but, every day passing by, I am a little less a Bordeaux player.

"My choice is to join a Premier League club and, if I could choose, I will go to Arsenal. Bordeaux have brought me so much. I will soon clearly state things so the club can prepare to find my replacement peacefully.'

In fairness, it's no surprise that an up and coming player from the French league should favour a move to Arsenal; a team that plays exciting, eye-catching, attacking football, with a French manager, who has a reputation for nurturing and developing talent. It certainly shouldn't signify the end of our interest in him.

Of course, I have absolutely no idea how good this guy is, but if he is genuine quality, then given our restricted budget we should be doing everything we can to persuade him that he belongs here.

Arsenal already have about 15 strikers; we have two; that alone should be enough to make him choose us. As for developing talent... Chamakh is 25 - he's not a kid.

I think those quotes were originally said in the summer when Le Arse were trying to pick him up on the cheap. We hadn't declared an interest at this stage. I could be off on this but I am fairly sure they are old quotes.

He may not be a kid but he's clearly an 'up and coming' player, despite his age. Henry was a bit of a late bloomer too.

Arsene Wenger reacted in a positive manner following Marouane Chamakh's confirmation he wants to join Arsenal.

The Moroccan star is being chased a by a host of clubs around Europe, with his contract at Bordeaux set to expire.

Chamakh will be available on a free transfer in the summer and he revealed over the weekend that it would be his dream to move to the Emirates and link up with Wenger.

Speaking to French television, Wenger has reaffirmed his fondness for the highly-rated forward.

"In life you should achieve your dreams, above all you should try for them," a smiling Wenger told Canal+.

"We do like him a lot, but the day we sign him - we will let you know."

Arsenal attempted to sign Chamakh last summer and again this January, but Bordeaux - who are still in the UEFA Champions League - insisted on him staying.

The Gunners now look in pole position to land him on a free transfer in the summer.

Arsenal close to signing Marouane Chamakh after move to Liverpool collapses

Chamakh is near to joining Arsenal despite strong interest from Liverpool and Inter Milan
Matt Hughes, Deputy Football Correspondent

Arsenal were closing in on the signature of Marouane Chamakh last night after the Bordeaux striker’s proposed move to Liverpool collapsed amid some acrimony.

Liverpool believed they had moved ahead of their rivals, who also include Inter Milan and West Ham United, in the race for Chamakh by offering the Morocco player a lucrative pre-contract agreement during intensive talks with his advisers early last month.

Sources close to the deal indicated last night that Chamakh has rejected Liverpool’s approach, paving the way for him to sign for Arsenal. The North London club would have no problem matching the £60,000-a-week wages on offer at Anfield and are in the process of finalising a five-year contract.

Signing Chamakh would represent a triumph of patience for Arsène Wenger, the Arsenal manager, who has been monitoring the 26-year-old for some time. Bordeaux rejected an £8 million offer from Arsenal last summer, but Chamakh’s contract with the French club expires at the end of the season and he will be available to sign on a free transfer.

Chamakh’s advisers are believed to have wanted him to sign for Liverpool, and for most of last month Rafael Benítez, the club’s manager, appeared to be favourite to seal the deal. However, the Spaniard was left angry and disappointed yesterday.

Benítez, whose transfer dealings have been undermined by the Anfield hierarchy in the past, expected things to be different when Christian Purslow took over as managing director. However, sources close to the player suggested that Liverpool mismanaged the deal, dragging their heels and being too fussy with their contractual demands.

Im not too sure how much of a lost opportunity this is but time will tell. Anyhow, if he prefers the Gooners, then begone!

Whether to sign for a London club and get to be close to a huge Moroccan community and on better wages, or for us with lesser wages, a moroccan Restaurant in Southport and Nabil as yer best mate.

It's a tough one.

The article quite clearly states Arsenal are willing to match our offer, it's not better wages. But that wouldn't suit your argument at all.

It's quite clear why most players would sign for Wenger rather than Benitez right now though.

We've hardly seen great examples in recent years of us being turned down for Arsenal, unless I missed the bit where we offered Sol Campbell a trial.

I get your point if we're talking about young players, but Wenger (along with Fergie) has a great reputation for developing youth, whatever Benitez' record on that score, Wenger is one of the best out there and has built a career on it, and sacrificed a certain level of success in recent years because of it.

This guy is 26 and a free transfer. If someone had asked a year ago who we'd rather have on a free out of Maxi and Chamakh, I bet most would have said the former. And regards London, it IS an attraction for players, given it's the capital city. You win some you lose some. I didn't hear many people moaning about the attraction of Arsenal when we signed Torres, Masher, Aquilani and Johnson. Or Ryan Babel or Kuyt for that matter, both of whom Wenger was interested in.

cf. Mark1975's later post.

Regards the article it states "The North London club would have no problem matching the £60,000-a-week wages" which, to my mind, implies that our offer isn't generous in the world of footballer's remuneration and well within Arsenal's budget.

I do think London is also a big draw and should not be underplayed.

He always wanted to go to Arsenal, didn't he?

And we've not had the greatest of seasons, so I suppose it's not hard to understand why we might be a less attractive option at the moment. I wonder whether he offered him first team football or tried to sell him the Torres understudy role.

Who cares? I think he's too lightweight for the Prem anyway.

My next door neighbour is French and supports Arsenal (and Marseilles), he knows Chamakh quite well (as a player) and would rather we got him than the Arse as he doesn't rate him that highly.

I certainly don't think he's what Arsenal need. They'd be much better off with a player in the mould of Drogba or Adebayor.

Why's that? To win trophies?

"No, where did you hear that?"

"I dumped her!"

Ha!

To be fair Mark has mentioned great examples which surely protects him from this example.

Meh, has the same # of goals as Tony Le Tallec. Why is everyone so interested in him?
[/quote]

Because he's going to be one of the best players in Britain in a few years time.

As opposed to TLT, who's probably not even the best player in his own family.
