I’m sure I read somewhere that Slot likes to work with a small squad. I can see a lot being moved on

Depends how many we can fetch in IMO. A small squad may well be Slot's preference but he'll also have seen the price we had to pay last season when the form of too many of the players he mainly relied on dropped like a stone.

He's literally already said that he needs to utilise the squad better next season 😉

There seems to be an assumption that the Saudi government backed clubs waive a cheque book and the player moves. I suspect there are a substantial number of players that will not entertain the idea of taking that money.

Not football money but I was approached to do the equivalent job to my own but in Ryadh for slightly more than double my current income but tax free and a 100% bonus also tax free. Didn't need to think about it - flat no.

I'm in the Arctic version of Saudi-land. High pay, low taxes, insulated from the actual living conditions of the people who come from here and the cost of living they incur.

It is safe to say that I am for sale. (I say this jokingly and in full awareness of the regime I am part of - but also in sincere admission as well.)

Not sure if I'd prefer +40c weather more than -40c weather tbh.

But certainly there are lots of folks who would not make such a move, whether due to lifestyle factors, moral considerations, fear of the unknown, etc. Money answers a lot of questions but not all of them.

There are those people that feel unable to cope and fearful out of an environment that they are familiar with.

To those that don't know I ran Expatriate Relocations for foreigners moving to Shanghai for nearly 20 years, 13 years owning and running my own company with up to 20 employees. I've been through moving expats (singles, couples, families) into China thousands of times (up to 500 per year).

One of our largest accounts was General Motors (alongside Boeing, BP, BASF, Astra Zeneca, etc. etc.). GM even had a special relocations dept. and hired psychologists to help expats adjust to life in China ... and prepare them to reintegrate back into life back home when they returned home.
We handled every aspect of their relocations (visas, work permits, schools, homes, maids etc.) bar transportation of pets/personal effects/furniture. For those companies that didn't have a support office - we became that too.

The vast majority of people arriving were full of trepidation, I would talk to them via Skype to allay some fears before they arrived for their one week (usually 5-7 days for families, less for others) 'Look-See' visit, then one of my staff would have a detailed plan to introduce them to all facets of the city that were of concern/interest during that week (facilities, schools, homes, sports, religion, general life and entertainment etc.).

97-98% of people went ahead with their move after that. There is always the 2-3% for which the move is not right emotionally, physically or because they can't come to terms with their company. Of those that moved maybe 97/100 would see out their 2 year contract, 90/100 would extend, some times up to 5 years. There were many, many tears from children and wives when people had to relocate back to the USA / UK / France / Germany etc.

It isn't for everyone, and I imagine a muslim country to be many times more difficult, but often the monetary compensation for just a few years of your life, will set you and your family up and likely provide financial security (as well as the overall experience making you a far more attractive hire/employee for many companies) for the rest of your life.

And this is why I've been able to secure a successful niche in my career. One of few pharmacists willing to go to the parts of Canada that I have. And I truly enjoy it on top of that.

would you straight swap darwin with hojlund?

pros:

he’d wreck united fans heads for a few seasons
apparently we scouted hojlund as bobbys replacement and he’s still only 22
hojlund might actually be alright in a decent side

as i’m typing this in remembering how badly i’ve seen hojlund play but the same goes for darwin

Even in the land of the hypothetical, it's the worst idea since the Titan owner chose a carbon fibre hull.

He's worse than Nunez by some measure and barely kicks a ball all game. United have successfully extinguished whatever potential he had.

I'm considering banning you for your own sake 🙂

Absolutely not. I'd give Darwin a lifetime contract before I'd take Hojlund on loan.

Right… I’m on record as saying I don’t think we’ll sell loads of players and that selling loads of players would be detrimental to our chances of winning things because it would make consistency difficult.

However… and I might be going full @bluebell here… there’s probably an argument that what we’re signing, bar Wirtz, isn’t necessarily players that will automatically be starters when the season kicks off.

So… we sign Kerkez & Frimpong, but Robbo & Bradley might well start the season as first choice with the expectation the newbies force their way in sooner rather than later.

Wirtz will start… we’re just not entirely sure where…. but let’s say he starts in the 10 position, with Dom the one to loose out.

Therefore selling Diaz, even given Wirtz “could” play there, but probably won’t, is kind of ok because Gakpo becomes first choice.

That in turn means the only real hole in the team is the number 9 as, if seems likely we sell Darwin - but in theory we could do false 9 with Wirtz or double 10 with Wirtz & Dom… whichever cooks your goose.

Where I’m going with this is… Frimpong, Kerkez, Wirtz and let’s say Ekitike combined is about £265m give or take.

Let’s assume Kelleher’s sake covers Marma’s cost.

We can get £75m for both Darwin & Diaz plus another £40m for Jota. Add in £40m for Harvey (who is even more surplus after Wirtz), £10m for Tsimikas (surplus) and throw in Doak & Morton combined for £40m, Chiesa for £15m, Badger for £20m and Endo for £10m - that’s £325 - and not ridiculous prices either.

That’s us signing Frimpong, Kerkez, Wirtz & Ekitike, getting rid of Diaz, Darwin, Jota and a pile of players who haven’t played much.

That’s £60m profit and us needing a winger and midfielder - so we could probably sign Xavi Simon’s or Nico Williams (release clause £60m) and break even, leaving scope for a Wharton or Baleba without really leaving us with a ridiculous transfer deficit given we’ve upped revenue with CL monies this season.

Not only would we be doing it without affecting continuity or the first team, but we’d be stacking the first team squad with a whole host of players desperate to play and at the right age to “explode”.

I’d would be against selling Quansah or Gomez if we could bring in a CB for whatever we got for their sale - that’s potentially another £40m to put towards a top defender (would have done it for Huijsen).

Fuck it… I’m going full Bluebell… if you’d told me we could add Kerkez, Frompong, Wirtz, Ekitike, Simons/Williams, Beleba/Wharton and a £40m rated CBtgrough selling mostly benchwarmers & Luis Diaz - I’d not only have bitten your arm off, but I’d be through the rib cage and feasting on your internal organs!!!

That’s the sort of thing that… potentially has us as the dominant team in England, with all that brings (ir European glory), for the next 5 years,

This is champ manager level of thinking.
