Martin Jol has suggested he could have ushered in an era of success at Tottenham had it not been for the interference of Damien Comolli.

Dutchman Jol had three years in charge of Spurs, only to be axed in 2007. He led the club to back-to-back European campaigns, and missed out on Champions League qualification on the final day of the 2005-2006 season, but was shown the door in October - following a sizeable summer spending spree. It has been suggested that Jol was overruled on transfers and it would appear the wound is still a little sore.

"When I first came to England, I said to Daniel [Levy] 'If you leave me alone to work for you, the people will mob you in the streets like you're the king'. But he never did that," Jol, who was speaking at his first press conference since taking charge of Fulham, said.

Jol claims his relationship with chairman Daniel Levy was good, but has suggested his position was undermined by now Liverpool director of football Comolli.

He said: "The problem was that Damien Comolli was responsible for most of the football things.

"I took Gareth Bale and Aaron Lennon to Tottenham. Comolli took Benoit Assou-Ekotto, for example. But there are no hard feelings for me. I like Daniel."

Jol was not out of management for long, taking charge of Hamburg, and he has put the boot into Tottenham by insisting the Germans are a bigger club than Spurs.

"I won't lie, I didn't feel great when they sacked me," Jol said. "But then I went to Hamburg, where they have 55,000 season ticket holders and we were playing in European semi-finals. So that was an even bigger club."

Jol needs to get over the Spurs thing already. It's always seemed that he's very bitter about it all.

How can he take credit for the good signings but then claim he was not given enough say? That doesn't quite work.

Has Comolli been in charge of any of our transfer-dealings so far?

Nando out?

it's still early days but so far he hasn't done anything or said anything which has worried me , concerned me or pissed me off .
I still reckon that with the right people and clear definition of roles then this setup can work .
Anyway we'll see , doubt he going anywhere soon .

Arsenal did pretty well with Comolli there didn't they? How did him and Wenger get along?

Its quite easy for a manager to pass the blame upwards when they are failing. And its not uncommon.

Maybe Jol was put out that it was Comolli he was working with rather than his mate Arnesen? At Liverpool Kenny was well aware who he would be working with and what the defined roles are

From the 2nd article, there's a sentence which rings similarity to what Jol said.

"Sources at Tottenham say that the only discovery Comolli made was that of the left-back Benoît Assou-Ekotto"

Harry Redknapp has revealed that former Spurs director of football Damien Comolli has poached his most popular scout for Liverpool.

Ahead of Liverpool’s visit to Tottenham, on Sunday, Redknapp admitted his disappointment at losing French-based scout Steve Hitchen to the Anfield staff.

“Damien knows the French scene especially, and he’s got a big scouting network,” said the Tottenham manager. “In fact, we have just lost our French scout, who is excellent.

“He’s just gone to Liverpool, so he’s nicked him off us a bit lively. It’s a boy called Steve Hitchen and he was really good, an English boy who lived in France.

“He’s gone to Liverpool. But he was very, very good and we liked him a lot. He would have been our main scout abroad.”

On a sidenote, seems like Steve Hitchen's title is European Scouting Chief, according to this site:

Director of football Damien Comolli continues to make his presence felt behind the scenes at Anfield.

Liverpool have bid farewell to assistant manager Sammy Lee and Scandinavia scout Michael Lindgren because Comolli intends to work more closely with Steve Hitchen and Mel Johnson, the scouts poached from Spurs last season.

dunno how i feel about comolli really, guess success on the pitch will be the judge

I wouldn't say that. Isn't that Kenny's and Clarke's responsibility ultimately?
I'd say his job is to get the right players for the right price. So far I'd say we did well with Suarez, not so well with Carroll, reserving my judgement regarding Hendo.

As long as Kenny is there, I think Comolli will have pretty much fuck all sway in who we sign.

I reckon he's more in charge with establishing the scouting networks, suggesting players and conducting negotiations.

Isn't that basically what I said only longer?
