Dan Agger - A football thread

Good call about Ayala. How about San Jose...

Yeh San Jose - although maybe there was a bit more to that seeing as he went home to Bilbao. You'd like to think so, anyway.

But I just didn't get the hurry to get rid of Ayala. He'd been really impressive in the C'ship as a 19/20 year old - it seemed obvious to me at that rate of progress the guy was likely to become a PL standard player.

Having to endure watching him play for Citeh aren't exactly a prospect I am looking forward to either but I guess I'll have to accept that we've once and for all accepted we are not going to compete for top honours for a long while.

On the plus side, you'd only have to endure that for around two thirds of each season, so it's not all bad.

I'm of the opinion that if we can make a bucketload of cash out of him, and sign someone of similar ability (and as much as I like him, I don't think that is as impossible a task as you make it out to be), preferably who doesn't spend over a third of each season (on average) on the injury table, then I'll be pretty pleased. We'll have a shiny new player who doesn't disrupt the fluency of the team with constant injuries, and a pile of money to reinvest in the squad.

Of course, there's always a risk swapping a proven player for an unproven one, but unlike some, I think we have to trust the manager to reinvest the money wisely. I don't subscribe to the notion that because we've wasted so much money in recent years, we should default to a conservative, frugal approach, where we do everything we can to cling on to aging stars who have had their heads turned. Our disastrous efforts in the transfer market were mistakes of past managers, and should not be held against the new one. On the contrary, we should show the same faith in him that we showed in Dalglish. Shrewd deals in the transfer market still represent our best chance of closing the gap on the top four. That, and astute management. It may be that our faith in Rodgers turns out to be misplaced, but if we don't have faith in him, then we shouldn't have employed him. Having given him the job, we have to back him until he gives us reason not to.

MEN Sport's City reporter Stuart Brennan said: "There seems to be a big gap between what City value him at and what Liverpool want for him, and City are unlikely to pay over the odds."

Oh go on... 22 Million please.

Can I ask - did Agger want to sign up to a new contract or what ? does he actually want to leave ?

According to "The Times" today he's been offered a new contract but has been in no hurry to sign it. Whether that means he actually wants away is anyone's guess.

If true, doesn't look as if he's about to complete a megabucks move any time soon...

Told this is tomorrows team. Reina. Johnson. Skrtel. Agger. Enrique. Lucas. Gerrard. Shelvey. Downing. Suarez. Borini #lfc

N.B. Agger in, Carroll out

One name has been missing for two games in a row and for that I love Rodgers.

It's a good side that, hopefully, for all the inevitable stick he'll get, Downing will take last week as a springboard and have a good game again tomorrow. Rodgers seems to have put some faith in him.

Good team that. Bit early for Suarez maybe, but he could be in decent shape after the Olympics.

Then what does he actually want ? - is he planning to do an Owen with us or dare I say a McMoneyman ?

So according to people on here - he don't want to go to City, and he is happy here but does not want to sign a new contract with us which has been offerred. Ok - I get it he needs physical conditioning and mental conditioning by the looks of it.

Going to slightly stick my neck out and say, Rodgers will make Downing our player of the season, and he'll score more than Suarez. #nothingtolose..

That team looks great. I'm loving it that Jonjo is in there.

Think Downing will have a pretty good season tbh. Cant get any worse at least.
It'll take some effort to perform worse but I'm still not comfortable having him in the line up.

AND YAY SWEDEN ARE IN THE SEMI'S!!!!!!
