DeAss - is he shit or the shit?

Beyond Salah and maybe Gakpo, does Slot rate any of our attackers? Has Jota scored a goal after coming back from injury?
I guess we have seen it for ourselves, Gakpo and Salah are our best attackers, both in performances and productivity so it is not so much of a surprise that Slot likes them as well. Gakpo is actually better than I thought so I give Slot credit for using him better than Klopp did. Jota had been good before this season so I'll give him another season, but he has looked really slow and ineffective lately.

If we did add a good CF it would feel prudent to keep Diaz - of our 5 attackers (who play) I'd prioritise selling both Jota & Nunez over him.

Regardless, there is no need for personal attacks. We have had 4 seasons to judge the enigma that is Luis Diaz. If you think he is good enough to start for us week in week out then be it.

From actual evidence it seems Slot does not rate him as highly as many of you do so we shall see next season. My best guess is nobody will come in for him so we are stuck with him whether I like it or not.
Personal attack?

If we can get £50m for him then we should probably sell, because that's a lot to sacrifice for a couple of years and it doesn't really feel like we should be giving him a new deal.

Is it worth doubling his money and giving him 4 more years, say? Maybe, I guess. I do think he's good enough for us without being outstanding.

Another consideration for me is I'd like us to have more raw pace in attack, and he seems like the most obvious wide player to replace.

Basically I'm on the fence.

He deserves a decent contract and, while his output could improve,
12th highest scorer in the PL as it stands. I can never get people saying his output could improve. He works his bollocks off, scores plenty and is totally committed.

I know some here don't like him and want better but that would be FAR from easy and no I don't think 'easy to replace'. That said if we got a very good offer from Barca then maybe, maybe we could reinvest it but I'm not convinced TBH and we have another PL title to win next season.

The attack hasn't exactly done badly this season (80 goals and counting which is 14 more than next highest) with City's 99, 96 and 94 the past 3 seasons as maybe the benchmark to aim for.

If we have a chance to upgrade, we should. If we get an offer that's too good to be true, we should accept it

But if not, he's good enough to contribute. I'm on record plenty of times criticizing him but it's not like he offers nothing to the team. He just has limitations and areas of weakness, such as end product and linking with teammates.

A good, not great player. Like Gakpo in many ways. And if one of them is injured or off form, the other can step in.

I like them both. And I'd be willing to sell both in a heartbeat if we had an opportunity for a truly world class upgrade.

I understand why he would want to go to Barca, but why would Barca need him when they have Raphinha putting in almost Ballon d’Or worthy performances in his position and Yamal on the other wing?
Exactly what I said 2 weeks ago, the last time there was a Diaz debate !

I reckon Atletico will come in for him and he’ll be tempted…but would rather keep our left options as they are.

He’s not a striker. He is however the top scoring winger in the PL ( exc. Mo. and Mbuemo is a virtual CF).
I mean, Diaz has played as a 9 a decent amount this year. Can't rule out mbuemo as he's more a CF (he's not ) for that when wissa has also scored more than diaz. Also, Brentford are fucking mid table. Diaz is the starting left winger or false 9 for the league champions. His output is not enough

I like him, maybe it's the old skool workrate thing but that does it for me. You don't see him hiding, ever. He's not quite up there with the best of the best but I can't think of anyone I'd describe as obviously better than him at what he does in this league. Everyone had a boner for Gordon last summer, he's got half the goals Diaz has. Yeah he's playing in a weaker team but he's next to Isak and you'd think he'd have better stats than 6 goals all season.

His dad can move to Barca though.

I don't think I would've had a problem with him staying if it wasn't for his contract situation combined with his age.

Oh come on now, you're over-reaching. Slot has shown how ruthless he can be with players he doesn't rate or want here. Diaz has started over both Jota and Nunez in their favoured positions at times. Any evidence that Slot doesn't rate him is minimal to non-existent.

If we can extend him for a couple of years on improved salary, it might suit all parties. With Barca (probably) and PSG out of the picture, where will the big-money move for Diaz come from?

Yep, energetic, hardworking working wide players is a Liverpool thing. cf Craig Johnston and Ray Hougton

That would probably be the right move if Diaz wants to stay.
In European Football - is there an inside-Lefty who has better stats than him ?

Forget about stats, when was the last time Diaz gave someone a tap-in after getting to the byline? When was the last time he produced a good cross for anyone? When was the last time he created a good chance for anyone for that matter? When was the last time he scored out of his own brilliance like how Mo / Gakpo often did?

One of his most recent assist I can think of is that short pass to Jota before he goes on his mazy run to score against Everton. That counts as an assist I believe? Go figure.

Wasn’t it Diaz who slipped in Mo for a narrowly offside goal in a recent game? I’ve been critical of this aspect of his play too, but he has improved his chance creation and assist numbers this season. I want to see how he would look with a proper #9.

Southampton at home

How anyone would rather see Jota stay instead is beyond me, he's finished and is forever injured. Like I said, if the right offer came along (for Diaz) and it meant we could invest well, then we should maybe consider it, but I like him and on current form he offers a lot more than Nunez and Jota combined, he's always fit as well.
