Do we need to talk about Coutinho?

So there have been a few links to Barca recently and yesterday a bit of a nonsense 50M link to City in one of the British tabloids.

Is there anything in it? How bothered are we?

I said earlier in the season that he looks a bit fucked off. Not sure if I've been misreading the whole situation but it wouldn't really surprise me if he pushes hard for an exit should an opportunity arise.

His agent says he's happy.

I hadn't realised his agent is Kia Joorabchian - who became known for the Mascherano and Tevez deals with West Ham.

That makes me think two things:
a) Coutinho's 70k a week must have some very shady image rights deal involving offshore companies and a tax avoidance scheme that hasn't been mentioned

b) Coutinho will be off when the time is right

Philippe Coutinho is "extremely happy" at Liverpool and has no plans to leave the club amid links with Real Madrid, claims his agent Kia Joorabchian.

Brazilian midfielder Coutinho has emerged as a transfer target for the La Liga giants, who have reportedly opened talks with his widely-known representative.

La Liga champions Barcelona and Manchester City have also been linked with the Reds playmaker, however, Joorabchian insists his client is determined to lead the newly-managerless outfit to the Champions League.

"Philippe is extremely happy at Liverpool," said Joorabchian.

"He signed a new long term contract towards the end of last season that represents his ambition and his feeling for Liverpool.

"Reports that I have been talking to Real Madrid about Philippe are not true.

"His aspirations are to qualify for the Champions League with Liverpool this season and to win a trophy. That is all that he is focussed on – and nothing else."

His agent said he's very happy here yesterday. I know it means little but that combined with the arrival of Klopp means I think we'll get another 2-3 years out of him and his new contract means we can realistically reject any incoming offers. I do wish he decided not to underpay him, though. He could be getting double the money see here already which is concerning.

Just occurred to me .... i think if real are interested i can see the hand of Rafa behind this. He probably upset we signed Klopp and will delay his eventual return to liverpool.

The upside of that contract is that it makes offering him a much better deal a lot easier. I can see that being our only play in the Summer.

Wow.... Barca tapping up players just as soon as they've finished their transfer ban for tapping up players.

Who'd have thunk it [emoji6]

He just needs a cuddle

Neymar was speaking about him recently. I know they are friends but Barca have history of using this method to tap up players. On a side note, he was brutal in the derby. I'm hoping he will relish playing under Klopp.

We'll still lose players, what makes you think Klopp will make a difference? Unless he's challenging for the title, we'll still suffer because we're in a less than glamorous city, we pay less wages than many big teams and we don't guarantee success or have a recent history of major success. Klopp lost players with Dortmund, so he's stepping into more or less the same environment here.

Coutinho will go eventually if we don't buck our ideas up.

If he continues to go missing like he did in the derby I'd snap their hands off for £50mil. Hopefully Klopp can get more out of him because he's flattered to deceive lately

I always find it amusing in the games the top players don't perform, people are 'happy' to sell their best players.

Like really who the fuck can you just replace them with instantly?

I can see him staying until the next world cup, so another 2.5 years by which time he will be 24/25 and we will sell for 60 million to barca/real

These rumours seem to start again every year with each top player, thanks in part to Barca's apparent licence to tap up players in public whenever they wish. I know all big clubs have to live with speculation about their stars, but we've acquired an image as a glorified feeder club, with the presumption that every star can be lured away after a couple of good seasons. That has to change.

Hopefully Klopp will give us a bit more international appeal for players, but personally I'm not going to get too bothered about Coutinho. At present the so-called 'little magician' still infuriates me almost as much as he entertains me from one game to the next. He doesn't dominate many games, let alone the big ones, and there's plenty of room for improvement, so if they want to hype him up as a superstar, then fine, let him go - he's nowhere near irreplaceable.

Yeah, he seems to be walking on the pitch knowing now he's our superstar (which is debatable), but it's like he thinks that all he needs to do is hug the left touchline and wait for an opening to cut in and crack a 30 yarder that goes in once every 10-15 times. He needs to step up and become the catalyst of our attack and to make things happen, like he used to do.

"Coutinho made the choice to stay at Liverpool without Champions League football this season. I don't think he will make that choice again,"

"The best need to be playing with the best. Coutinho is the best midfielder in England right now. That is great for him, but when you play at that level the big clubs will notice you."

"If Liverpool don't qualify this season for the Champions League, I am sure he will be the most in-demand player in Europe next summer."

This rumour comes from Guillem Ballbag who also reckons Klopp is going to Bayern.

To be fair to Bollockay, he's not the only one who said that. I've seen mention elsewhere that Klopp's first choice would indeed have been Bayern, and that he abandoned the idea only when they told him they wouldn't be making any long-term decisions until sometime in the New Year. This was one of the reasons - not the main one, but on the list nevertheless - why I'd ideally have preferred Ancelotti if a deal could have been done.

Yeah but Ballbag was still saying it the other day in direct opposition to everybody else. It's like he's just after website hits or something.
